  • Marshall Gilkes is one of the preeminent trombonists in the jazz world (and beyond) today; his command of the instrument and his work over the past decade plus has placed him in the top tier of players worldwide! We started hearing rumors about a collaboration with S.E. Shires a few months ago and were excited at that time, but actually being able to put hands on the finished product is a whole other experience entirely! The Marshall Gilkes Artist model trombone is, in our opinion, one of the most unique small bore tenors one the market, with a complex sound and incredible response; take a listen to our review and let us know what you think!

This horn has such clean articulation for jazz, it’s astounding... I feel it sings when you play ballads, like lament... it brings such warmth and depth of sound... it’s a beautiful horn!!!

Yes! Add the King 2B and Urbie Green Martin 4501. That would be a favorite video!

Keith, I’ve listening for years, this is my first comment and it’s about your playing; versatile, clean, outstanding musicianship. Over the years better and better. This Shires/Gilkes horn is amazing. You mentioned your 3b, I am also a 3b player and I have a question. I bought my horn in 1975, nickel plated and F attachment. The F was a mistake I finally had removed last year. Plays substantially better in all registers. We had to replace the upper/inner slide pipe so my technician recommended adding an interchangeable lead pipe. He replaced it with a similar lead pipe to the original. This 3b does not slot as well in high register as my 1950s 2b and is still a little stuffy in the mid to low registers. Can you recommend another lead pipe?

Sounds great. But I am of the opinion it's the user, not that tool that makes things happen.
