- Marshall Gilkes is one of the preeminent trombonists in the jazz world (and beyond) today; his command of the instrument and his work over the past decade plus has placed him in the top tier of players worldwide! We started hearing rumors about a collaboration with S.E. Shires a few months ago and were excited at that time, but actually being able to put hands on the finished product is a whole other experience entirely! The Marshall Gilkes Artist model trombone is, in our opinion, one of the most unique small bore tenors one the market, with a complex sound and incredible response; take a listen to our review and let us know what you think!

Forget about the horn for just a second, this dude playing it is badass!
Agreed! Keith is a monster player!
This is why Schmitt Music and Keith Hilson are the best in the biz! AMAZING review!
Thank you for making such an awesome instrument!
This horn has such clean articulation for jazz, it’s astounding... I feel it sings when you play ballads, like lament... it brings such warmth and depth of sound... it’s a beautiful horn!!!
Depth of sound is very accurate. There are lots of things this horn excels at.
Marshall Gilkes , amazing player, you yourself do the horn justice , keep playing
Thank you so much for watching!
Omg Shires did it again! 💪👍
Public announcement out tomorrow, you all heard it here first! :)
Love the sound of this horn and great respect for your own playing ability.
Thanks for watching; this horn is a blast to play!
Looks and sounds like a great horn! Beautifully played by Keith! As I said in another comment I've only ever played on Yamahas lol!
Great sound, beautiful playing.
Thank you very much!
Sounds really nice. Beautiful horn
Amazing playing Keith, this was CRAZY GOOD!
could you do a comparison video ? Marshall Gilkes vs Michael Davis vs Michael Davis + Models? always the same songs on each model ?
And with jump cuts between them
Yes! Add the King 2B and Urbie Green Martin 4501. That would be a favorite video!
Nice playing !
Thank you very much!
WoW
Nice horn and great chops
Killer! I’m in love!!
Very nice playing.
Thanks for watching!
Keith, I’ve listening for years, this is my first comment and it’s about your playing; versatile, clean, outstanding musicianship. Over the years better and better. This Shires/Gilkes horn is amazing. You mentioned your 3b, I am also a 3b player and I have a question. I bought my horn in 1975, nickel plated and F attachment. The F was a mistake I finally had removed last year. Plays substantially better in all registers. We had to replace the upper/inner slide pipe so my technician recommended adding an interchangeable lead pipe. He replaced it with a similar lead pipe to the original. This 3b does not slot as well in high register as my 1950s 2b and is still a little stuffy in the mid to low registers. Can you recommend another lead pipe?
Killin!
Thanks for watching!
Great stuff, KH!
Thanks for watching!
I dig this horn
Us too!
You sound great on that horn! What are those play-alongs you're using?
Sounds great. But I am of the opinion it's the user, not that tool that makes things happen.
You are certainly accurate there however it is certainly a nice tool as well.
Just could not put the horn down. Beautiful tone.
Hi ,, I have a question, this horn includes all two lead pipes ? Or just one. ? ,, can you show the case ? Thanks
Shires stands tall in the trombone world ....they do it right.
07:32 I am pretty sure ring is from branze not from gold brass.
