  • What are the cultural differences between Koreans and Korean-Americans? We discuss what it's like growing up in two different places as a Korean from a Korean American couple's perspective. My best friend Joseph Kim along with his wife Maeum Lee and I go over some interesting observations about the two distinct Korean cultures.
    We talk about Korean fashion, Korean language, relationship struggles, and more as it relates to being Korean vs Korean-American. Enjoy!

    안녕하세요! Good day everyone! There were many more things that we could have discussed that didn't make this video - so here's my QOTD: What are some other differences that you've noticed between Korean Culture or Korean-American/Canadian/Australian/etc. culture? Comment below! :)

      I’m from Australia and i’ve visited korea twice the past year, so i guess in as a non-korean the differences i find in culture (not to say that any of this is bad). But the way Koreans communicate through messaging apps/online, whether its with friends or between couples its quite constant where they may find it offensive if you were to take a while to respond. Australians however don’t get offended often. Its normal for people to respond in hours or even the next day (sometimes). I think its very interesting.

    A lot of Korean guys raised in America are kind of frozen in time as far as Korean culture goes. My "male Korean" influence was my father who came to America in the 70's. Therefore, a lot of Korean girls used to tell me I had a very old fashioned Korean mentality.

    • @skycedi

      I think this is with all immigrant communities. The Soviet Russian and Soviet Ukrainian community in Brooklyn, NY is the same way! People come over to NYC from modern day Russia and Ukraine and say our community is as if going in a time machine to the 90s lol.

      Americans in general are much more conservative than people in Korea might believe. I've always noticed that Koreans in Korea tend to believe that being American means being liberal and free and open minded and such, which is also true, but there's a lot of conservative minded people here as well.

    Ohhhhh man, Korean's living abroad, what a topic! In my experience, there are 5 main categories of Koreans. Taking Montreal for example: Adopted Koreans, Koreans born in Canada, Koreans arriving as a kid/teenager, exchange students with full paid tuition from parents, and those that arrived later in life. Usually these different categories have trouble mixing and can even go so far as to hate each other.
    All of them except the late comers hated it when I spoke Korean with them and they seemed very possessive of the Korean language. Only seems to happen with Koreans, too. The Chinese or Vietnamese in Montreal, for example, were always excited when Canadians spoke their language to them.
    Here in Korea though, speaking Korean as a foreigner is dope.

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  Před 6 lety +17

      Thanks for sharing! What you say makes a lot of sense and doesn't surprise me. Like yourself, I have seen different categories of Koreans here in the states who don't like to be around each other for different reasons. And I've noticed a possessive nature of Koreans here in the states too in regards to foreigners (and sometimes even myself as a half-korean that doesn't look Korean).
      I think a big part is that when Koreans live abroad and find other Koreans they can relate to, they tend to be possessive and very prideful (and closed off to other cultures - and yes, even non-Koreans who want to embrace Korean culture). Seems like Koreans in Korea are a little more open to foreigners who take an interest in their culture/language. Weird, right? Of course, everything that I've said doesn't apply to ever Korean

    I disagree with Joseph on the particular dress example. I think it's a matter of acknowledging trends. Flower pattern is one of the hottest trends this year. If you look at fashion magazines or even go to popular clothing stores, flower dresses are everywhere in this fall. Koreans are very trendy people who absorb new trends much faster than people in any other countries even here in Manhattan and they're trend-setters. With that being said, I trust Maeum's taste over Joseph's..lol Sorry.

      As someone who was born and raised in American as a Korean American, I fully understand Joseph. If it's someone who has not grown up in Korea, it's actually culturally not common to study or be even interested in what people in Korea wear. As a girl, I would make comments of other Korean immigrants as well while in the US on how they dressed 'weird.' However, as I now am in my 30's and have moved to Korea (lived here about 6 years), obviously you begin to blend more with the surrounds or culture that you live in. My own clothes have changed (while one may think it's subtle, it's apparent whenever I visit home in the US).. I immediately get comments that my style has changed. And so I respect Joseph for being honest, cuz that's what many people think. Unless you are a super trendy Asia-fanatic type of person living in the US, majority of the people do not care too much about the trends of Korea. Perhaps maybe other Asian countries =) I liked this video!

    In reference to the dress. I think a lot of what Joseph was saying about how the dress would have been construed had to do with his personal feelings and insecurities about having a wife wearing something that wasn't "cool", his perception of his own culture, and his idea of what is fashionable. Which again, any man being that opinionated about women's fashion makes me laugh. Personally as someone who was born in another country but grew up in America, I would never look at someone wearing their traditional clothes, modern versions of it, or even western clothes inspired by korean traditional wear and think "wow this person is trying to show off their culture" or "omg it's so obvious she's not from here/she's such a fob, etc"-- I think thoughts like that say more about the person thinking it than anything else. If anything it gives us the viewers insight into what HE thinks when he sees his wife dressing that way. And taking culture out of it -- I don't think any man or partner has a right to be that judgemental about what his wife wears. I understand that he might be viewing it as "oh i'm really just helping her cuz she's not from here" but I've seen this dynamic way too many times to not call it out for what it is. An honest and open way to deal with that situation would have been -- "hey, just FYI personally I don't think it's attractive but I understand it makes you feel beautiful. So I'm just going to let you know it MIGHT be viewed --not definitely, but MIGHT x,y,z way and at the end of the day if you want to wear it, go for it" and leave the decision up to her because she's a grown ass woman, regardless of where she was born. Also, if we're talking about culture differences, this is America. People wear ALL kinds of shit and no one blinks an eye. I grew up in Queens, spent more than 2 decades here with friends from all over Asia--I've never seen or experienced any one saying something negative about us wearing traditional clothes or western versions of it that were inspired by our culture. What I see is a lot of compliments--the only people who would roll their eyes and judge are the people who---well quite frankly, judge others. Why influence someone to care about that shit? Because you do? Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe my view is just skewed, but I'd rather just see husbands who are confident in their women and inspire them to be more confident in themselves, like "boo, you look and feel good in that? then rock it, don't give a shit about what anyone else says." It especially kills me that he stated that she felt really beautiful in what she wore. LIKE GOOD, story is done! Why you gotta jump in? I really just think the husband needs to admit that what he's doing isn't 100% for her benefit, it's probably most likely because he would have been embarrassed or he didn't like it. Which again--she's a grown ass woman.

      Isa Hite the point is that’s supposed to be his wife. 🤷🏽‍♀️ i wouldn’t marry someone that embarrassed me. And I wouldn’t marry someone who isn’t comfortable to be out in public with me because of what I wear. Quite superficial issue. I do know koreans I know how they dress.

    What your friend said about living in Flushing is 100% true. After 8 years my mother moved us from Fresh Meadows to a mixed neighborhood. My mother thought that hanging out with Asians would make me lose the English language and I would have to repeat ESL again. (I'm one of those American born who had to take ESL -.-)
    I feel that Asian Americans do things that please themselves whereas Asians do things to please others bc they want to save face. It's about making themselves look good in the eyes of others.

    Oooo I never thought of what differences you can see in Koreans and Americans when a Korean goes to America since my first experiences of Koreans were in Korea. It was nice to hear about the differences cuz it helps to understand why we think in different ways and how to not let just the fact that we have differences cause a gap between us :)

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  Před 6 lety +1

      Yup! It very with every Korean and also with every Korean American, but in our experiences, we've seen sort of a "Venn Diagram" sort of affect when it comes to Korean culture and Korean-American culture. Sometimes, there are even Korean-Americans with hardly any sense of Korean culture, so it's almost like two different cultures colliding. But yes, either way, it's a beautiful thing when couples make it work :)

    Love your vlogs, my husband is a 40 year old guy from India, I like older men like him most for their life stories, his stories of his experiences in India are so interesting... I wonder what it would be like to have a Korean mom, I've never dated a mixed guy before except a Muslim guy who's half Arabic half Guyanese, I kept forgetting he was mixed since to me and most people he looks full Indian from India, the only difference is his bone straight hair, he doesn't consider himself Indian, he's a very nice non religious guy

    There is a role of Korean-American church too. Amongst Korean Americans, their church plays a key role in socializing. Almost everyone goes there, so many of them are actually very religious (-> conservative). Christianity in South Korea is not very big, and the proportion of religious people (of any religion) is decreasing year by year.

    Is there a difference between the Korean food in Korea & the Korean food in the US of A?

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  Před 6 lety +3

      It depends on different factors. For example, there are some restaurants in Northern NJ/NYC and other parts where there is a big Korean population that are similar to many of the restaurants in Korea (from my experience). The types of food served and the vibe of the restaurants are very similar, if not the same. There are way more choices and options in Korea (obviously). Korean restaurants in the states typically serve Banchan (side dishes) just like those in Korea. The entrees (depending on the type of restaurants) are typically the same as well.

    He needs to let his wife talk more, seriouslyyyyyy... and why does he care so much how she dresses? It seems like he's really conscious of her fitting in to the American paradigm. Is he scared of her looking like a "FOB" or something...??? Korean-American men can be pretty chauvinistic, that's why I didn't marry one rofl!!! :-/ Source: I'm a Korean-American woman.
