What Happened To F1's Blown Diffusers?

  • From 2009 all the way up until 2014 the F1 grid was home to a diffuser arms race, in the hopes of increasing rear end downforce. Once the infamous double diffuser was banned, we saw the rise of the blown diffuser, and eventually the even smarter reign of the Coanda effect exhausts, with Red Bull leading the charge with incredibly innovative designs, even to this day.
    While these diffusers affected F1 development forevermore, we no longer see them on todays cars... so what happened to them? Jake Boxall-Legge takes a look down memory lane to find out why they were so impressive, and why we haven't seen these diffusers on F1 cars since 2014.

      @@dysonburt3309 Are the technical regulations WHY they're less competitive, though? That's pure speculation. A lot more than just that has changed over the years. The whole thing of crafting the technical regs of motorsport is waaaaaaaay beyond armchair opins in CZcams comment sections, IMO. There were stints of utter dominance in the '80s and '90s because one team had the sauce.
      Honestly, budgets and resources are probably far more to do with the parade we see today than weather teams can innovate or not. It's a big assumption that cash poor and less staffed teams would all bring out miracle innovations and topple Mercedes or whatever... or are teams with more braintrust and cash just more likely to pull out the sauce in that scenario? I'd reckon the latter.

      @@DapperHesherNo I never said that regulations make teams less competitve but what I was saying was that when teams fall behind in the devlopment race, strict regulations make it harder for the teams behind to catch up. as well as to make innovations it takes a risk for the team who first designs it so if Merc devolop something new they have to spend a lot of resources to make it but teams that have less resources can copy that innovation for a lot less, in additon to if it doesn't pan out that invest of time and money is lost for Merc which they could have had working on their in less of a risky area for the car.

    I miss blown defusers, but given how much of the exhaust energy is taken up by the turbo and hybrid systems on todays F1 cars I don't think the gains from using such a system would matter that much. The extra power of the current 1.6 turbo hybrid formula cars makes up for the added down force from the blown diffusers. With a few hunderd more horsepower cars can simply tack on more down force elsewhere and overcome the added drag.

      Good question. The idea of Coanda is that a turbulent flow will remain attached to a surface for longer than a non-turbulent one (I’m reluctant to say laminar because it doesn’t apply to F1). I guess from this that the exhaust gasses would stick to the a Coke bottle waist of the car and exit between the tyres and the inner fairings.

    ❤😀🇬🇧. My mk1 mx5 used Helmholst resonance for the intake. Every 2 sroke since the MZ's uses a tuned expansion chamber (thanks Ernst Degner).. Then Yamaha, with its YPVS variable port timing. With several other cars/bikes using variable intake lengths . Less complex than phased VVT cam profiles. Now its possible to have complete, independant control over valve timing and pre ignition of a richer mixture, seperately, which ignites the main charge. We've come a long way from the side valve, OHV, HEMI, and Susuki' TSCC's.
    Less rules more innovation...please.

      @DapperHesher Před 3 lety +1

      @@cuscoothriyas5163 That's exactly what it was doing, particularly in the case of Williams. They were essentially slamming the car onto the ground to stall the underbody and lower drag on the straights, then jack up and pitch the car to make the most downforce under braking and in the corners. It was really just making the car one big active aero device.

    • @cuscoothriyas5163
      @cuscoothriyas5163 Před 3 lety

      @@DapperHesher Not really slamming the car to the ground per say. When they were used they had to be specifically programmed for each and every circuit or it would bottom out and flat out render any control of the car moot as it would lift one or more of the wheels above the floor of the car, essentially making the car a sled you can't steer.
      That said with computing having come as far as it has now and with fuel concerns at an all time high, now would be a good time to reintroduce it. Perhaps it might minimise or even negate the need for big wings which would cut drag down by quite an amount.

      These things are done mostly in consultation with team engineers. The two biggest concerns are speed/safety and financial viability. Look at the way the 2021 regulations have been formulated. Look at the rules for the Coanda effect. All of that was done in consultation with teams. And that was all teams, not just Ferrari.
