Zarina Ahmad is the principal at Piedmont Avenue Elementary School, located in North Oakland. As a mother and educator, She shares six children with her husband Mubarak Ahmad.
Education was clearly an important factor in Mrs. Ahmad's home. The family prides themselves on having instilled good values in each of their children.
She is an African American, who likens herself to be a direct descendant of Africa. She learned that Traditional African names often have unique stories behind them. Whichever ethnic group you look at, these local names reveal a wealth of information about the bearer. From the day or time a baby is born to the circumstances surrounding the birth, several factors influence the names parents choose for their children. Hence, all her 6 children bear Nigerian (Yoruba) names. Oblivious to where her lineage is from on the continent, her subsequent ANCESTRY DNA RESULTS coincidently traced to NIGERIA.. In awe, she said ‘It all makes sense now!! My ancestor spirits have been communicating, guiding, protecting, and ordaining my footsteps all along..
She said, "It is our job, as teachers and parents, to check our own mental pictures of Africa. We should be ahead of the time and be aware of our role in perpetuating the stereotypes in the minds of our children. We should find ways to present African studies in a manner that breaks this cycle of perpetuating misinformation and distorted images of the continent..
This, she has done with her kids and has educated them about the African HISTORY, STORIES, HEROES, REPATRIATION etc.. She said “When my kids came home from school, they know that you have a snack, and then you start studying,” she said. “I’m a backer of kids and education and am a strong believer that education is a way to open doors and make things better for all people.”

Lovely interview.
All your guests I have seen are fresh, dripping in traditional garments, skin glowing. It’s a pleasure to watch! Keep doing your thing Sis. You makes me want to visit Ghana 💜 🇬🇭
God bless her and you Denta for bringing her to speak.
This was definitely inspiring to the max! Thanks
Thanks for this educative interview.
Brilliant interview Odana and your Mama guest speaker and you both made or start my Saturday wealthy
It’s essential that we Africans should reclaim our names because not only it has a meaning but identifies us too.
Yes we must teach our children should be proud having links with Africa.
My sister what a beautiful inspirer you are and I totally agree with you that we teach our children about Nat Turner, Martin Delaney, Edward Wilmot Blyden, Carter G Woodson, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Walter Rodney, Thomas Sankara, Steve Biko, Robert Mugabe, Henry McNeil Turner etc
@Andy Lumeh Go and do your shit somewhere else
I like this ladyvby teaching her children about Africa.
Have you noticed that women who wear ther natural dreads tell a lot of sense?
It is all due to confidence. We should all be happy with who we are, that's the key.
The operation of our consciousness is based on the knowledge of identity that is imprinted in us as young people. The "African Self" should not be defined by slavery, colonialism or neo-colonialism. The African Self should and must be defined by the rich history of knowledge, bravery, prestige and heritage from Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Zulu, Ethiopia, to the Great Zimbabwe and many others that am still learning of. We need to reshaped the thinking of our children to embrace their true self. This was a great conversation! Thank you!
Wowww that's really wonderful bo ...thumbs up
Dear Zarina...I'm deeply touched by your family's testimony... especially by the values early instilled in your children...You remind me of the Proverbs-Ch.31-Woman in the bible...The Holy Spirit, with His holy angels, & not the spirits of your ancestors, have been guiding you all...May He continue to do so until you all fulfil your destinies(Isa.41:7,21; Rom.10:8-13)...May you & entire household remain strong and blessed, IJNA... Shalom.
All my kids answer African names and they love it and their names carry positive meanings.
@@trueamerican769 you can call yourself whatever you like, I am proud of my African ancestry I embrace it and live proudly in it. You see yourself as what makes u proud, no argument from me.
@@trueamerican769 once again I state my blood flows with African ancestry, I am not arguing with your beliefs, I am telling you mine and that I accept who my ancestors are and where they came from. You are free to be what you are. We don't have to agree on that, you do you and let others do them. I have not argued your point of view why trying to argue mine. Let me state it for the record one last time, I am unapologetically African by ancestry.

Wonderful mother.
She looks too young to have 6 children, it’s almost rude to call her “mother” but she deserves the honour. 👏🏾👏🏾
She ages well. Also she said she has grand kids and has been married for over 33 years which could be around the interviewer's age. So yeah, nothing wrong with calling her mama. Just the same way, bro or sis is used in the US.
Thanks for the compliment. This is my mother, she just turned 60 on January 20th.
How come she don’t open a school in Ghana. We need more African-Centered schools in Ghana. The current school curriculum in Ghana is mostly European centered. I believe she would offer a great service to Ghana educational system because we definitely need it. Again I would love for her to open a school in Ghana mostly in African centered curriculums.
Why Ghanaians can't opened a school for themselves?
I notice Odana and Ivy Prosper love featuring Black Americans like this sister that are ignorant of their true identity and history. You got Africans promoting this false narrative about the whole Africa thing.
@@trueamerican769 What has she said or done that made her ignorant of her true identity? It appears to me that you are the real ignorant one as regards this conversation.
@@trueamerican769 did you actually listen to the interview or are these lines you wrote typos?🤷🏾♀️
I take it the statement you made is because you’ve opened several schools in Ghana right? Everyone’s path is not yours to dictate.

Indeed, she is Fulani.

Exactly, pointed nose and the skin
Unfortunately, some Africans intentionally lose their heritage and culture when they travel out of Africa. Some will tell you that because they are not home they cannot discipline their children. I don't understand what type of discipline they talk about though. So sad. We need to take our cultures with us.
My parents shared the work and also.my dad taught me my maths. Now days ppl don't have time for that

Hahaha. My sister, it is not your ancestors but the HOLY SPIRIT TALKING TO YOU. Africa with rich Culture where the Bible started.
The Africans had the bible but they still honored their ancestors so maybe you need to study true African history.

Why do you say Africa but only mention Ghana or Nigeria?
Is Africa only Ghana and Nigeria? If she is Ghanaian please say Ghanaian history don’t say African because we African are different in our own way and Africa is bigger than just Ghana and Nigeria.
And their ancestors came from different countries in Africa , DNA don't lie but they always mention Ghana and Nigeria when it comes about slavery which sucks....
Our history is intertwined as Africans and we are similar in so many ways than different, understand why are being bothered by the history of Ghana and Nigeria why are some of us keep dividing ourselves. As an African when I go to any countries o the continent never stand out a thing of beauty.
@@abbassaquee286 that’s not the point I am making. I am not bothered by individuals telling their history but don’t mention Africa when only talking about Ghana or Nigeria because when you say africa it’s a bit like you speaking for every other Africans. For a example the woman made this video I believe is from Ghana, so why from all other African countries she could mentioned but decided to mention Nigeria? I mean Ghana has a close link historically with Ivory Coast but she skips pass Ivory Coast and decides to mention a country that is two or three countries further away from Ghana. Why?. So if like you said we Africans have soo much in common then why a lot of Ghanaians refuse to mention other African countries but Nigerians and themselves.
I only see this behaviour with Ghanaians, they talk like they’re talking for all Africans.. like Africa is only Ghana and Nigeria.
@@rossbank7248 it is proven majority of slaves were taken from central west Africa. This is areas of Cameroon, Gabon, Congo and Angola
Well start your own channel and begin to chronicle your own African history.
Talking about history? Is she aware of the Yoruba as the children of Canaanites of the Bible? Jerusalem before the Exodus was known as Jebu ( the Jebusites). If Google the 1747 map of Western Africa known as the kingdom of Judah, she should notice the kingdom of Jebu ( Jebusites). The Akans of Ghana and other Western Africans from Israel. The Torah was written in the Akan language but Romans or Europeans has destroyed their mindset with the name Jesus.
As GOD said, I am GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob children, but not GOD of the Romans and Europeans, they are not of the family of Jacob. Have no reason to publish the Gospel if not for their interests. The same Europeans who accused the Jews of selling their GOD sent Jesus accused Africans of selling their children. Sadly, the children of Jacob today, cannot see beyond the Europeans and have lost their minds if I may say so. A word to a wise???
Not all Yourbas are descended from canaanites
And yes, not only Africans sold Israelites, Israelites too sold their brothers in that continent. History did repeat itself

Your ancestry comes from both sides 23+23 = 46 chromosomes total 23 from your father 23 from your mother. The only chromosome to come exclusively from males is the Y, which as a woman she does not have.
