You harvested WAY TOO early. The tops were not withered/dry/dying at all. Here in Idaho, we plant Mid April, (weather permitting) but anytime up to May 30th. Then we water, water, water. Potatoes are heavy feeders so we generally amend the bed with chicken manure, worm castings and rabbit manure if we have any, before planting. THEN AFTER the first killing frost we wait for a few weeks for the spuds to mature and form thicker skins. Then we harvest anytime up until Oct 15th. That's nearly 6 MONTHS in the ground!! We do NOT wash them off, but leave a fine layer of their sandy dirt on them. We store the spuds loosely in burlap bags in total darkness. These will yield many hundred lbs. I'd say 3 wheelbarrows full from 20 lbs of seed. My favorite are Purple Viking 💜. Look them up. Crisp as an apple, super white flesh, gorgeous purple striations (like Saturn) up the skins.
I’m not a superstitious person at all but whenever we plant potatoes at my house we always plant them on a full moon and we get really good crops. Onetime we didn’t and we got like no potatoes.
@@paigek9923 that's a whole different way of planting. I've seen many moon calendar plant schedules on the Internet but have never tried. Perhaps after 40 odd years of growing I should give it a go 🌙 🙃
They say you can either harvest once the tops have died or they flower and they all went to flower. I guess it all depends on the variety. U you insight!
I wait until the greenery dies off. It gives the potatoes more time to grow. I got about 10 pounds from 4 plants. It was awesome. I love the upcycled drum shell. Great idea.
When they flower, if you want 'new potatoes' (the little ones). Harvest 3 weeks after flower. If you want big ones remove flower ( flowering tells you they are mature enough to make tubers). Let themngrow until they fall over and get yellow. But don't water. The plant goes into 'starvation mode' sends sugars into the tubers.
I have tried several years and never got a single potato big enough to eat. I add soil as the plant grows and wait until the plant dies completely and still no potatoes except the teeny tiny baby ones. I even tried in tall laundry baskets last year to be sure I'm not just missing them by not digging deep enough. What's going on? Can you give me help or tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Yes you are supposed to wait until the leaves turn brown and the stems start to whither. I will have some this year first time having a space to grow in. Our last property was all fenced in the back with huge trees so all shaded most of the day. Ordinance would not let you grow food plants in the front yard unless it was all movable. I had a large flower garden there. We had a gas explosion and subsequent fire that totalled the house. Fire people didn't even try to enter the house. The first explosion threw me out of bed and on to the floor. I came to with my Jack Russell/ Manchester Terrier screaming over me. The wall behind our bed was gone. I was lying on my right side next to my closet and feet near my dresser. Picked the dog up and told him to jump and threw him as far as I could. He lost his whiskers burned both ears and his nose but he was alive. Second explosion. The perpendicular wall falls down and I realized we could get out. I look around to see where my husband was. He was sitting on his side of the bed. I yelled at him to help me up off of the floor. He thought I was dead, so he was sitting there waiting to die. He reached over the middle end of the bed with his left hand. The fingers had burst open and the skin was caught around his fingernails. I grabbed his hand and he pulled me up and started to walk down the wall. His left foot is burned somehow. He thinks his foot went through the sheet rock and that is how the bottom of his foot got burned. I put my hands up on the bed to crab crawl across it and stick my left hand on a big pile of hot insulation that had fallen right where I would have been lying. It would have burned my torso with second degree burns at least. I get over the bed and start down the wall. I get about 2/3rds of the way down and my foot goes through the sheet rock and out the Hardee Plank(siding)and I hit the ground with my foot it causes me to loose my balance and my knee pops out of joint. I pull my leg out of the hole and walk down the rest of the wall. Every couple of steps my knee pops out of joint but it pops back in again. We walk out into the back yard. I call to the dog. I try to get around the house through our Gate. I can't even get close.I can hear the neighbors from the next house. We walk around behind the shed in the back yard. It is metal and large so we hide from the heat. Third explosion. Ammunition from in the basement starts going off. A neighbor from behind on the other road brings a ladder and a chair so we can get over the fence. I make him go first. He gets over alright. I start up the ladder and put my right foot over but I can't reach the chair as I am only 5 feet tall. The top of the fence digs into my knees one after the other. That was when I noticed that my pajama pants were ripped from ankle to ankle. The only thing keeping them on my legs was the ribbed cuffs. I finally get both feet on the chair and my knee pops out of joint again as I step down to the ground. We walk to his front yard and he finds us stuff to sit down on. We go to the hospital each in our own ambulance. Did you know if all you burned was your fingers they cut all your clothes off. I just lost ever thing I own and they cut up all my clothes. I could have just taken them off if they would have said something. My husband does not remember his ride in the ambulance at all. He does not remember much of the first day. He was in shock. I remember it all. He had to have cadaver skin grafts. So he had to go into surgery to have his face, head, hands, and his foot abraded. We are all healed and I want to write a book about our ordeal. What do you think? One guy said he hoped I die of Covid.

When our kids were young they used to take potatoes that had begun to sprout and bury them in planting pots. They’d harvest the potatoes, the largest of which were smaller than a ping pong ball, wash them and come to beg me to deep fry them (whole). They were so proud of their potatoes, and claimed them to be the best potatoes they’d ever tasted.🙂
Love growing potatoes as a hobby. Easy, fun, rewarding. Carefree. Sometimes buy seed potatoes but I get great results from store bought that go to seed.

The drum was a good idea. We use old discarded rubber tires that we stack 2-3 high because we have so much Clay in our soil. They we fill them with soil, compost, and seaweed. (We live in Maine, so we get rockweed from the shore) We layer the potato eyes/seeds with the dirt and then wait until the first fall frost. Each tire bed yields so many potatoes we store them in burlap, unwashed in our cellar and from 4 tire mounds we have potatoes almost all Winter. 😁
Dead like you think you have killed it, we planted 3 crops to test when to harvest. First had some green, wee lil taters, second almost no green, baby taters and some baddies, for our last we are waiting til it looks like it was living in a desert lol....good luck

I grew mine in a tall laundry basket lined with a mesh laundry bag. We got some before the heat and relentless rain storms killed off the plants. I was hoping for a bigger harvest, but it is what it is.
In fact he spring I take all my potatoes that started growing in doors and put them in my compost heap. In the fall I'm taking out fresh new potatoes! 😋
At one time in Ireland potatoes were Devil produce. A trick of guarding a crop made by a landlord in a neighborhood made them seem valuable so the stole them and then the love for potatoes was turned around.
I pulled my potato about a week ago, it was the size of a grape. I wrapped it in foil, threw it in the toaster oven, and had the tastiest, tiniest little baked potato

I made a set of tables out of a drum set I found in the trash a few years ago. I got a coffee table, two end tables and a entryway/hallway table. I gifted it to a drummer friend who had just bought a house. Edit to add that those taters look great.
You can just plant them directly inside a bag of soil. Works fantastic multiple times until you work the spent soil into compost and reload the bag to do it again
We had to pull ours early. Moles are about 5 lbs of ours. But at least we go 20 lbs. So off to a farmers market to get more for winter. Try again next year.
Wait a little longer and keep mounding the dirt around them as they grow taller. The potatoes will sprout off the stems underground. The more buried=more potatoes. You should yield around 8 per plant.
Ours are just flowering. Husband planted 35 plants, we’ll have over 100lbs lol I wish I could give you some potatoes when we harvest

As soon as they die, I dig them up, then let them cure for a couple of weeks.

Potatos are one oa the easiest to make, they dont need very much son to grow and they multiply very fast and easy

This is an older video! I did mound them, they were in the ground for so long, I’m planting more this year so we will see what happens!
