This.
@Eric exactly
I know
it should’ve been because this is what most people took away from the film, very rarely does the beginning 15 minutes of a film impact its legacy for years to come
So true
Honestly, even tho the movie is somehow old right now, I think this is one of the saddest scene of all Disney & Pixar movies...
@Daniel Studio's Yes it will.
OLD? How can you even possibly date and qualify something as immaterial as a movie (which easily gets through the passage of time) as old?
Time means nothing this scene is beautiful
It's so beautiful because it seems almost realistic. Even though they did have a happy life, there was obstacles along the way. Sadly, they didn't get to have the dream they achieved for. That's why it's beautifully sad
Have you seen the short Kitbull? 😭😭😭
Everybody gangsta until you play the "Married Life" clip from Up

I know right
The fact that he bought her tickets with the left over money in the jar and was about to surprise her...
Breaks my heart how all his effort was crushed.
Well near the end there's a note on the last page of the adventure book that says "thanks for the adventure, now go make a new one! love, ellie" which shows that ellie didn't get what she wanted in life. She got something even better. plus, her ghost/sprit was probably with carl when he was taking the house to paradise falls.

Yeah, maybe Ellie was able to talk to Russell in some telepathic way in order for him to understand.
The married life
At one part in the movie, Russell was talking about his dad and how he had both exciting and boring times with him, but he remembers the boring parts the most, and Carl realizes Ellie felt the same way.
One of the most emotional scenes in cinema history. People say its sad, but, its not just sad. It conveys some happiness. Ellie lived a wonderful life with Carl, regardless of not having a baby or an adventure. They both were content. And she was content with her life so she could end it there, but she gave Carl her book, knowing that his story wasnt over yet
That's a nice way of looking at this ;w;
@@tsukishadow5715 thanks ^-^
"Dont cry because it ended. Smile because it happened"
Ellie had her adventure...with Carl. Pixar continues to evoke emotions through all of their movies. The Good Dinosaur has it Bambi moment. Wall-E and Eve. Coco. All of their movies touch our hearts because they put their hearts into the movies. My personal favorite is Lava because it is so personal to me.
@@Strangebyrd aww and thats so true. I personally love UP alot due to personal reasons, but Ive always loved every one of these movies
TBH, Pixar didn't even have to make the whole movie. They could have just done this scene as a short before another movie and *STILL* make everyone in the theater bawl
it probably would have won a good bunch of awards too
It does look like a short film
theres not really a message here, we just see the entire life of a happy couple
@@koolooc726 yes there is a message. People say its sad, but, its not just sad. It conveys some happiness. Ellie lived a wonderful life with Carl, regardless of not having a baby or an adventure. Be horrible. You’d have no closure
@@katie2275 Goddamn, ruthless much?
If that happened, its gonna be very sad ending
Unless the movie its an utter masterpiece, a short film of UP would absolutely opaque any movie that comes after it.
I completely agree, although maybe instead of ending on Ellie's death, maybe briefly show Carl gathering balloons and flying off in his house. The ending shot would be of Ellie's picture, before zooming out to reveal the house on top of Paradise Falls
“Thanks for the adventure - Now go have a new one! Love, Ellie”

2:39 I actually like the original idea of Carl giving the kids a cool balloon animal instead of just a regular balloon. I think it would've showed how advanced he had become after doing his job for so long he as well as how bright and good he was with kids once upon a time until Ellie's death changed him. Still though, one of my favorite Disney scenes ever!
Yeah, I like that
Ooh that's actually smart! But I think they wanna focus on the regular shoed balloons more, since the whole movie is about the regular round balloons lifting the house up. But I do like your thinking tho! :D
Interesting way of thinking dude. It also would’ve been a second foreshadowing in that part of Carl’s next adventure/stage in life involves a child and a bird. (Ie Russel and Kevin)
I would imagine it would have been too hard to animate, but then again, Despicable Me did it a year later.
In the final animation she smiles a lot more, in just about every frame, even as they break the jar. I am glad they did that because it underlines how she was ultimately happy with her life. You get to see from here that what she wrote in the book was genuine.
This is the best scene in cinematic history. It’s told with no talking, no ambient sounds, just through animation, emotion, and music. It perfectly represents how living a Married Life would feel like. It actually envelops the watcher in its emotion.
Watch Only Yesterday (and Pompoko, Porco Rosso...)

I love these two characters so much! Yes, there’s sadness, but these two had so much joy together. My husband and I had a dream of a wonderful trip some day. We saved pennies in a huge jar, but we ended up using them on various things through the years. Two years ago, we took a cruise and went snorkeling in Cozumel on our 37th anniversary. Best day ever!
I’m glad to hear that. You and your husband have a very great day. Hope you’re doing well during these times.
The perfect display of the all emotions involved in the human condition...with zero talking. These 4 minutes are simply an amazing display of life.
The part where I sobbed the most is at the part where he leaves his wifes funeral, and then comes home. He's like..."what do I do now?" I'm sobbing
The part that really gets me is when he first visits her in the hospital after falling on the hill. He knows what's going to happen, but he needs to be strong and hold together so he doesn't spend their final days together depressed, but make them good for her sake
What Carl Needs To Do Is Keep Moving Forward & Find Himself Another Women In His life, With His Wife's Trust.
Uh oh - get ready to cry! Michael Giacchino's waltz took this scene to the next level as told by Pete Docter and crew! Just wonderful!

Well said, I completely agree.
Pixar is just so good at making films that a younger audience and enjoy, and an older audience as well.
Maybe 3 years ago, now look at what they are making.
it sure shows how life goes to quickly and that every single moment that you get to be with your family
When you don't have family
This is always so hard to watch, because there will always be tears in the way
Carl wore a bow tie to the funeral because Ellie always did his ties
I’m big sad
U made me even sadder
I just noticed how they used the balloon colors. When Ellie was in Carl's life, all of the balloons were bright and colorful, but when Ellie got sick, at her funeral, and when Carl is walking home all the balloons are blue.

We all love great memories together...
*the drawing makes him look like a normal guy, but the actual animation makes him look like a square*
I like the Storyboard version of Carl. It looks a lot better.
@@scarecrow108productions7 no.
storyboarding is a very early part of the animation process and character/environment designs likely weren't finalized when it started, and changing it up halfway (especially to the length of a full film) is jarring
The team that works on the film already explained that it is like a reflection of his personality, Carl is someone with a square personality, that is, someone logical, sequential, analytical, detail-oriented, organized, etc.
@@scarecrow108productions7 the square is an artistic decision
As a kid without much going on, I never understood why everyone was so devastated over this scene. Over a decade later, in a relationship that I couldn't be more grateful for, I finally understand. Now I can't even read the words "Married Life" without almost crying on the spot

It seems like as if Ellie is unable to have kids on her own
Ok but they could have adopted
up is the perfect combination of humor and sadness, i love pixar
It amazes me how there was very little change between the original idea and the end result.
That is because that is the final storyboard
There was likely a few versions of the story board, probably loads before the final one. This one being used as a guideline for the final project we got!~
The fact that hits me the most is that Ellie always used to lead Carl up the hill and in the final scene Carl is leading her so excited to tell her about paradise falls but then she is ill😭😭😭😭😭😭
It starts out so happy, then it gets so depressing at the end. Such a great movie.
One of the best animations ever no cap
I still remember the trailer for this on tv.
Anyone notice how Carl was more realistic in the story board while Ellie hardly changed? Especially when he was young. It seems the older he got the less realistic he got, while Ellie stayed true to the outcome.
But all technical stuff aside,
Still brings me to tears. Still a beautiful love story, told in a way... that’s just masterful.
Maybe the movie was in the prospective of Carl.
If it was, Carl must've thought that no matter how old and wrinkly they get, he'll always find her beautiful and the person he'll always love.
If the movie really was in his prospective and if the crew really decided to add that secret message in there, then this makes me respect this movie even more.
This is an animated film, don't come me at me with that bull...
"realistic"
Bruh how does the house fly then?
"carl was more realistic"
I think Ellie changed
By that you mean his head isn’t a square
What is brilliant about this is that in just about 4 minutes, Pixar tells us a love story that has more emotion and meaning than most romantic movies, and not one word is spoken. Beautiful.
To this day, I still tear up.
Squidward:hey who put this bowl of onions here?
Pixar did
Squidward Tentacles XD Hey squidward 😂
The onion ninjas have struck again!
*starts crying*
Squidward Tentacles ay Squidward!
They're so strong!! 😭😭😭
You can literally put the “The End” right after this scene and I guarantee you people would be more than satisfied. That’s how good the first ten minutes are. I seriously believe it is one of the best animated openings of all time, right up there with The Circle of Life, and Toy Story’s opening sequence.
I havent seen UP in like 2 years, and watching this again made me cry again.. :D
Awesome! Ive always wanted to be depressed in two different versions 👍
One of the most gut-wrenching, beautiful, real scenes ever. Still gets me. Every time.
I remember seeing the trailers for this movie and thinking it was just about some old man and boy traveling somewhere in a flying house. Then, I was very surprised by this beautiful scene that nearly left me misty-eyed. I loved how the journey in this movie was motivated by the memory of his wife and the promise they made each other. Even more touching, though, were those words of wisdom she left for him that he finally found and read! Such an amazing movie!
1:23 that transition hit the feels.
3:56 that REALLY hit the feels.
2:02 PARADISE FALLS
the movie is named UP
PIXAR LOGIC
Lol
Welp, the plan has really... GONE DOWN on that part.
up.. :'3
That makes it the movie even sadder.
If this isn't what you mean, I interpret this as Carl's _Paradise Falls_ because Ellie isn't beside him any more and that he'll only see her _UP_ in the afterlife.
FALLS are high UP. If not, the water will just be flowing, not falling and it would not be called a fall.
Growing old gets me
Ah great
Just what I needed on Valentine’s Day 🙄

I see myself in this sequence. Although sad it's beautiful, always reminds me what is important in life. Love to all Carls and Ellies in the world!
This scene must be in top 10 Best Scenes from any Animated movies of all time , maybe even Best movies of all time. The level of detail and the love put into such a short amount of time that leads into such a striking yet simple ending is mind blowing
…until one loses or can’t have a kid you will never truly grasp the emotional weight this scene has. We couldn’t have a child for a while and how Carl comforts her…so realistic.
Nothing but a good cry once in a while.
Pixar wants us to cry in San Valentín, this company is evil, but I still love them.

How life is so important, love one another, support each other, one day at a time.
I cried more for the storyboard since they looked more realistic, bodywise. And it reminded me of my grandparents who have been married for over 50 years, who have the same love that Ellie and Carl do. I just.. ahhh love this story.
