An An, world’s oldest male giant panda dies in Hong Kong

An An, the world’s oldest male giant panda under human care, was euthanised on the morning of July 21, 2022, at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park. The park said the animal, aged 35, equivalent to 105 human years, had refused solid food and only drank water or liquids with electrolytes in the final days leading up to his death. The park added that the panda had been mostly inactive and staff had provided medical care to ease its discomfort.

Really sad. I remember watching him in the news about a week ago where they said he’s suffering from health problems, now the 1st generation of pandas in hk all passed away

They were both born on 1987

I wonder why animal years are equivalent to so many human years
The life expectancy of dogs is 10-15 years.
The life expectancy of healthy people is 80-120 years.
So a 10-year-old dog is equivalent to an 80-year-old person.
I don’t remember clearly from where I learned that the comparison of animals years and human years makes it more comprehensible to understand how long the animal lived in comparison to other animal lifespans of its kind. For example, a panda’s wild lifespan is 20 years. For this panda to live 35, is like a human surpassing the average of 77-78 years old and making it to 105 years old.
