    ABANDONED WOODSIDE AND MONKS TUNNELS BIRKENHEAD WITH THE MONKS TUNNEL OPENED IN 1844 TO REPLACE GRANGE LANE STATION WHICH THEN BECAME A GOODS YARD.
    WOODSIDE TUNNEL AND STATION OPENED IN 1878 AND CLOSED TO TRAINS AND PASSENGERS AFTER THE BECHING REPORT. WOODSIDE CLOSED IN IN 1967
    THE WOODSIDE TUNNEL IS 889 YARDS LONG AND THE MONKS TUUNNEL 460 YARDS.
    AS FOR ME I LOVED DOING THESES TWO ON MY OWN VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING AND SOME FANTASTIC VIEWS OF LIVERPOOL TO, THESE TUNNELS ARE ON COUNCIL PUBLIC LAND.
    NO TRESSPASS.

    13:10 that’s what’s called a clothes mangle, they were used up to the early 1970s and you put your clothes between the 2 rollers and turned the handle and it would squeeze all the water out. Kids often got their fingers trapped between the rollers and it didn’t half hurt 😂

    Hey mate thanks for videoing these tunnels, in particular, the Woodside tunnel. Many years ago when the Woodside end of the tunnel was open you could walk all the way through. But the end you came in was backfilled to about the same as it is now. Anyway I started to walk through but I lost me bottle, I got about as far as where those arches in the roof stop. I wish I’d had the balls to walk through but was scared I might see a ghost hahah 😂 But I didn’t think anyone else could get in them now as the Woodside end is all bricked up.
    You know where you stopped when you came to that wall and changed your torch? Was that the other side of the bricked up end at Woodside? I thought the tunnel was a lot longer. Someone said that tons and tons of concrete foam had been used to fill the spaces up in the tunnel so that the houses above wouldn’t collapse into the tunnel.

    • @EXPLORINGWITHMEDAVE
      @EXPLORINGWITHMEDAVE  Před 7 měsíci +1

      yer the blocked up portal was the way into woodside station, think the tunnel was just sealed at both ends when it was finished been used..the tunnel into dingle station had all the concrete and foam put into it as it collapsed in and the housers above were in danger. Big concrete block doen there now and a owner who wont let anyone down there, not sure if the garadge is still open... thanks for watching and we heading underground in wales for a 24 hour marathon explore in one of the biggest undergound mines in the uk,, coming soon.

      @@EXPLORINGWITHMEDAVEYou are doing a great job. You are contributing to lots of people learning more about their environment. Even though the authorities frown on URBEX, without you guys, so much of history would be lost. But mate, always look after your safety first and don’t put yourself into danger. Your safety and life is worth more than the URBEX. Great work though.
      As for the Dingle Tunnel you mentioned yeah a real shame the owner has no plans for it. I always say that the Dingle tunnel could be reopened with a suitable amount of money but it could be used as an amazing heritage centre. The roof could be repaired and the concrete foam removed and the station restored. They could even put some track back in and run the restored class 502 Merseyrail train they are working on. They could even run a monorail train from the open end to the Albert Docks … imagine how cool that would be to take a ride elevated on a monorail train to see the edge of the Mersey and the docks all the way back to Dingle where you change and get in the old restored Merseyrail train through the Dingle tunnel into the old station. It would be amazing

      Wow mate thankyou for this comment it blew me away. Yes your right i do need to be more carfull at 50 think i have no choice😂 What a idea for dingle wonder if anyone has had that idea. you may need to take that to someone might just be something the city might take up. is the garadge still open. but wow the more i read this the better it sounds. Why dont you see if someone will take alook at it maybe a partnership between the council merseytravel and the maritime museum. Didnt know about the class 502 getting preserved were that getting done, just hope we get to keep a 507-508 to allthough think 2 units maybe to much... Thanks Again Mate for this comment loved it.

      Fabulous, enjoyed watching this on my big screen. Always wondered what condition the two tunnels were in these days mate. The first one which went to Woodside, ran underneath the edge of my Nanas house in Water Street, you could hear them pass under the warehouse which was three doors down. And the Monks Ferry tunnel, I vividly remember as a kid aged about ten, regularly climbing up onto a nicely bricked rectangular wall, just north of Ivy Street. It was built with the same ornate brickwork as the tunnel outlet for Monks Ferry terminus that you identified by them new flats on Church St. Anyway, the rectangular shaped brick wall, that I climbed up, you could see down deep like a rectangular pit, and the train track deep below. So, I guess it was like a large blow hole for steam to outlet from the tunnel. Always fascinated me, looking down there, as I didn’t know why a train would run there, and where too. I only found out in the last ten years thanks to www.railmaponline.com when you set the filters and layers you get the old track route, similar to what you showed on your video as an overlay map. I must have had a fascination with the railways when I was little, cos not only did I regularly climb up on the wall to look down onto the monks ferry tunnel outlet, I also used to climb a wall near my grandma and grandads on argyle street south. The resulting view was of a ruck of sidings, and loads of old underground trains all parked up. I forget the unit names, think they were 503’s. The same ones that in the mid to late 70s were the main stock used on the underground. Loved those trains, with their flickering lamp light, wooden panels, fabric seats. Great days, which come rushing back to me again now 50 years later thanks to your amazing presentation here! Well done bud. Si.
