This is a perfect example of why these products need to be open source. There is no reason to make the products obsolete when technical solutions can be used to keep the products current. I hate that companies can turn a functioning product into e-waste on a whim without any consideration of existing customers.

unfortunately, if you dig deep enough you will find that security protection companies are all in bed with home insurance companies. It's a huge scam and they will fight tooth and nail to block any whole home security system to be open source.

"The subscription was cheaper then traditional systems"
Yes, this is the timeline we live in now where we have to pay a subscription for our security systems to work. You know, instead of storing it on a local storage raid and then being able to just give a hdd to the cops if they need it and when they have a warrant to do so.

This is no different than the way they handle Android, if you ask me. I bought a Google Nexus 7 tablet long ago because it was a vanilla Android device that _should_ have gotten updates for its entire service life. Once google killed that product, no more updates would ever be made available. Google has no interest in getting companies to update Android. Most of the time, the version that you get when you buy the product is the same version that it will be running years later. No more. Though I'm no Apple fan, I can at least say that Apple will produce updates for their product for at least 5 years from the date of purchase. I have never been able to say that about any Android device I've ever owned.

i switched out of nest, if whoever we went with does the same thing, I will resort to mcgaivering some frankenstien jumbo of different local devices and "program" the whole shebang through home assistant automations. the most painful and frustrating part of these switches is having to retrain my parents on how to use the systems, doing months of testing and configuring to find the most optimal frictionless setup and how to have my parents use it. Nest was so easy, i didnt have to do anything fancy and had my parents on the system in a matter of days, and now i spent almost a year installing, configuring, and testing a competitors system, rigging it with HASS to mimic nest's door reminders when you arm it as closely as possible and for mobile alerts that sound nest's emergency tone, and to train my parents again

I don't know if there are any technical limitations or agreement terms that prevent this, but I'd really prefer if ADT were just added as a security service option in the existing Nest Secure. I do not at all see why hardware should be cancelled over a service partnership.
I've had mine for about 2 years now and I'm unsure of how much longer my sensors are going to survive. I forget if I can even replace the batteries.
Also, it'd be really nice if the Nest app functioned as a tag itself. They are just NFC, after all. That would greatly reduce the need for replacement or additional tags.

Hey - I definitely fall into your boat and have the same gripe with Google.
I pay monthly for the 24/7 professional monitoring from Brinks so I can have the cellular backup. Now, I'm getting a notification that cellular backup is not working.
I called Google, they said it's Brinks. I called Brinks, they said it's Google! I turned off my home's wifi and tested the system with Brinks and they were still able to receive an alarm signal from my device over cellular.
All they could do was advise me to reset the Nest Secure by long pressing "5". After the system rebooted, the alarm was gone for a few minutes then picked up again.
Google is not sticking to their commitment to support this device and its existing customer base. I pay the $360 per year for this service as I take my security seriously and now I cannot even count on it.
    Has anyone else experienced this??

I have loved Google products. Unfortunately they have killed off so many good products that as for me I don't consider purchasing anything that would require long term support. They just do not have a good track record. If Google keeps killing off their products like this they will lose a good customer base. There is only so much that consumers will put up with before they go to things that are more stable. As for me I will very seldom go to any new Google product due to the fact that it will usually not last for long.

I think you're spot on. Every security system I've ever used is problematic. The last was a proprietary one similar to Nest Secure that just didn't work right. Too many false alarms. Too many activations. That Google made something that just worked perfectly and couldn't figure out a way to transition it to ADT without a complete hardware refresh is mindboggling. The price is outside my reach, but your description and user experience would make me seriously consider shuffling to fit it in... if they hadn't canceled it.

I’m not using this system but there are so many tech companies that do this and we wonder why so many electronics end up in landfills or sent to other poorer countries to pollute their land. Everyone wants to talk about pollution this is a good place to start. If you make a good device, offer great customer service, and support I will stay with you. If you offer a fair price buy back program I would be more apt to upgrade that device sooner. Considering that most consumers are on a 2, 3, or 5 year technology upgrade cycle depending on the device wouldn’t you want to entice you customers to upgrade earlier? Or how about a loyalty program? End or rant and I will get off my soapbox.

@@2AFreedom I heard they have a new system coming out soon. I'm surprised it wasn't released before Christmas. The older system is great and meets all my needs

I think I'm starting to feel the slight phase out of products. I am switching from nest account to Google account for nest (currently named "migration of accounts") however upon deleting all of my cameras and nest detect door sensors, all of my cameras hooked up and worked. However, the nest detect sensors all failed to connect to my nest secure box and gave me an error that read "The app is having trouble connecting to the assisting nest product. Make sure that you are close to it, that it's online and that your phone is connected to the same wifi network. NS030"..... I've tried the 15 second long press until I see a yellow light and also one minute with no battery as well. These nest detect sensors simply DO NOT want to connect anymore..
.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..... Migration to Google is now known as migraine from Google.

So glad you made this video, I just ended a 5 year contract with Slomins and looking at nest secure for my next system to transition to. Rethinking it right now. Any update to this since the video came out? Also, good idea about trade in, as google stated they would do.

According to their website, my local hardware store has one in stock? I can see why, no one wanted to take the risk that it would work. :(

It's not free though - the device is free and it comes with one free year of service, after which you'd have to pay a monthly subscription fee to use the ADT alarm system.

Great video. I don't think I would trust an IOT product line to secure your most expensive asset like this. I believe the only way Google will offer a trade in program, which will probably be peanuts compared to what you paid for, will be if a class action lawsuit is started.
Unfortunately, in the home security world, there are very few ways of bypassing the cost of these solutions, especially if you want them to be smart products.
On the one hand, you're gonna lease the products from a big service company, and if you cancel at the end of your term, some of them let you keep the hardware and you can pay a professional to unlock them for you for a few bucks on the DL.
On the other hand, you pay up front for the hardware like you did here, and hope that the company that sold you the hardware won't screw you 10 years down the line....

You spent over $1000 on a GGLE consumer product?!? I am really surprised by that. doubly so that in order to do so you abandoned Amazon Echo environment.
And maybe for something like serious security one should use a company that has most of its focus on security.
