Brian Lim is basically a @sshole for killing gloving
I remember the Hard4Gsmes when you had that guy who talked about penises and danced with a tree.
I bought Ocarina of Time in November 1998. Never in a million years did I think I would be watching “never-before-seen” footage of this game 25 fucking years later! It really is a masterpiece!
It's a dungeon from the first Legend of Zelda (probably one with Stalfos in it as seen here) recreated in Ocarina of Time as a test, and at the end is the Triforce room. A simple dungeon test, like the "fstdan" dungeon. Wonder which one came first, since the one in this video is much more primitive.
My thoughts always were that fstdan was a proof of concept dungeon for the initial ganon’s castle design of the game and was the first coherent linear set of rooms created rather than a series of test rooms with a single (usually programming related) purpose. Fstdan seems to show up right from the beginning as well and go though very little advancement as well.
The question for me is whether the triforce rooms came before or after that. Both seem to reuse SM64 assets extensively which says to me they’re right from the start of development and it looks like it’s just two geometrically simple rooms with block textures which could be from the test room period. One room with an enemy to test AI. The other with animation and cutscene tests (link grabbing his sword for example and the facial expressions) that was deemed noteworthy for marketing purposes and kept around until there was something coherent to show.
Also, those textures are in the various leaks, with the less-blue color scheme. So if any color correction is done it should take those *actual textures* into account.
9:13 “to round it up, all the text in game will be in Spanish… LIESSSSS!!!” As a Spaniard this was one of the biggest lies I ever seen
9:14 "On top of that the game will have all on screen text in castillian" (Spanish basically.)
Funny how the spanish tape for the beta of Ocarina says that but the final build was still in english, Very few games in the 90's especially from Nintendo were localized to languages other than english so this was kind of a big deal
They gave you a booklet included with the manual that has all the game's lines of dialogue translated to spanish because I guess they couldn't translate the game on time for release, but still.
Man i still love that early Kokiri forest footage with the Deku tree, the more colorful look and the sun rays alongside it being bigger gave it more atmosphere to me, makes it look more magical i guess.
I get the feeling that it was developed from a computer and didn't run on actual N64 hardware.
@@MiYakuT could be, looks better than the final at least.
One mid-watching thought: I don't think I've ever noticed the water in the triforce room before, but looking at it, I think that water got repurposed into being morpha in the end! The texture and physics of it are just so morpha-like
yes the water seems ps2 graphics
@@danielbarrios4379 I mean, sure, but it very *specifically* looks like morpha's water. Like, the cutscene after you beat it especially.
That water in that cutscene was found in the Gigaleak in an older revision of a test room we already had.
@@protocetid ohh, neat! ^^

The sword swing animation at 9:20 onward, I swear there used to be a GameShark code or mod for Ocarina of Time that had that modified the sword swinging animation to be like that. I think it was called "beta sword swing" or something like that. But for the life of me I can't find that code again, I really wanna use it.
The jump slash version of that is what you're describing. :) Many unused animations still exist in game.
I think I know exactly what you're talking about, weren't the hitboxes broken, or just not there at all? Makes ya miss them early 2010 days when finding these kinds of codes was much easier!
This was an exciting time to be a gamer, my imagination used to run wild when there were only a few N64 games out just wondering what the system would be fully capable of and what kinds of games would be made
I think I used to own that tape in English. Or at least a similar one that had the same promo videos on it because those exact promos sold me on BlastCorps, Shadows of the Empire and Turok. Those were some of my favorite games on N64 back in the day.
Been subscribed to you for a long time now. I've watched you grow, gain influence in the "prototype/unreleased/cut-content" community, and I've never been disappointed. Keep up the great work, I wish you well in all your endeavors, and thank you for creating such amazing content. (Zelda 64 and "Ura Zelda" have been a holy grail of sorts for me, the fact that it is essentially becoming a reality is still surreal to me.)
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. Honestly really helps us keep our motivation and drive! 🙂
I always love to see Link rubbing down chests.
Oh my
Ta ta ta ta da da da da, DA DA DA Taaaaaaaa!
You found a pair of.... orbs!
Who knew a chest could contain that...
That's amazing that you were able to piece those 2 seemingly unrelated bits of footage together!
Also is it me, or does it seem like in the cutscene where Link gets a piece of Triforce, appear like there's only 1 in the chest, and once he's opened the third chest, they assemble? It makes me wonder more about this beta build these journalists/video editors got to play
From the looks of it, the beta/demo they played was a dungeon where the task was getting to the triforce, while fighting some enemies. Really wish we could get a hand of these versions.
Miyamoto in 1997: I'll make this video to just showcase Zelda
CZcams in 2023: the game never shown to public
It's amazing finding an unseen video of Zelda 64. It got me excited to continue modeling Link. Awesome, you have a vhs copy of the video. Was wondering if you could send a link to download this video in HD so I could study it and continue modeling
I absolutely love that zel has managed to recreate the prototype water effect seen in this footage for the Spaceworld '97 restoration where it appears in the Ladder Test map.
It is indeed the exact same water seen here.
yes i guess, seems gta vice city ps2 water
I've been watching since you guys had less than 1,000 subscribers, this immense channel growth over the years seeing you guys nearing 100K subscribers and becoming a pillar of video game preservation on CZcams makes me really happy :)
Incredible video as always. Funny note I always assumed Link, with the shadow was entering the room with the Triforce due the blocks being the same.
Fingers crossed for a beta Castletown find someday soon.
Incredible work piecing all of this together Tony! The thought about the Stalfos room colouring was definitely new to me - as was the door closing scene being the same room where Link finds the Triforce =D
Amazing work, thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. There were a lot of snippets in here that where almost mind blowing to see.
Also I have a theory about the dungeon room color differences, do you think it might be tied to the Day/Night cycle? Maybe they were testing the lightning system in the dungeon too.
You can see this in the Boss Stalfos room in the Master Quest debug rom since it's a lot bluer (and darker) when the time is set to night.
y tendra todos los textos de pantalla en castellano " the big lie, xD it was fully english, they lied!"
The complete video feels like a nintendo direct if they had those back then lol
I particularly love the way the narrator says the name of the games, like burastodozo and turock lol
Except it's way cooler and with more soul than Nintendo directs hahaha
Seeing a rendition of an old footage put into an actual level design kit is trippy and quite frankly enjoyable! Well done! This is my first video from this channel and I can't say that I'm disappointed.
You did so great with this footage and showing your findings Tony! Also those two rooms with the Stalfos do look the same! My guess might be the lighting effect was changed for that footage, unless it is the same footage your guess is as good.
Tbh Nintendo isn’t known to make multiple maps for the same testing so more than anything I would say it is the same map.
9:13 "And to round it up, it will have all the text on screen in spanish"
That was the biggest lie of all time 😂
they probably planned a translation
Fantastic job: clear, unique, helpful. Neat to see Rev Limit too.
Super cool. Thanks for sharing this history!
Wow, time just never stops moving does it? But, what a cool gem to see unearthed by Hard4Games! That's so freaking awesome.
Nice a new Zelda video from my favorite CZcamsr Tony!
11:06 Isn't this the cave system map found in the overdump? Just wondering, they look similar
Loved the video, never knew that they used a realistic looking shadow for the triforce scene
Great video it's so exciting! Also great sponsor
I like the funky music in the dungeon. ❤
Your videos have highly motivated me !! I have spent countless hours between the debug rom and beta questing with GameSharks codes… to buying a cartridge form of the Spaceworld Demo !! I’m now trying to learn hex and coding just to be able to discover more. It’s very hard without outside knowledge or guidance but than more I discover the more excited I become ! Thank you for all the info you share !! Ocarina of Time will forever be the goat
Fantastic stuff
Thanks for this!
I love these videos! You earned a subscriber!
Thank you!
It's pretty cool that most of this data was found in various beta content and leaks but we never had the triforce room in any of them
Music was so sick on the last tape
It looks clear now. I bet now with this video. Game mods would recreate these areas. Overall good job.
Wow, great stuff.
See, *this* is the sort of thing that VHS-decode and the Domesday duplicator were made for.
So cool!
I think the different tinting with the Stalfos fight is probably because the area was set outside possibly? Maybe the day/night cycle was implemented around this time so some of the footage looks like nighttime and some footage looks like daytime?
That's my theory.
I'm from Spain and I remember that video tape. At 9:14 the spanish narrator says "tendrá todos los textos en pantalla en castellano" that means "it will have all screen text in spanish". Well, that was a pretty big lie. Ocarina of time came out in Spain in full english. The game came with a little book with all the text translated to spanish. It wasn't until Majoras Mask that we got a full translated zelda game in Spain.
9:12 "y para rendondearlo encima tendra todos los textos en castellano" lol they finally release it in English, and they gift a minibook with the game containing all the translations...
sera q en un principio estaba subtitulado al español ?
I guess they just didn't have enough time and figured that was better than nothing
It was that, or it was pure PR to hype it up. Does remind me of something I learned yesterday
Early in it's development, HobbyConsolas mistakenly reported on Hybrid Heaven
being a Nintendo 64 version of Metal Gear Solid, which is quite amusing
@@RadikAlice Yhea... looks like... they went out of the schedule on so many things at that time, but come on... its just a rom edit... and they alredy had the translated text...
That was a lazy movement more than a "mistake" from the press.
3:30 "Running his hand down the chest a little bit" xD
What a great video thanks Daddy!!!!
God what id give to have this build of the game
So charming. So cool.
Beta questing, wohoo :D
This footage is on the Starfox 64 preview vhs from Nintendo Power. I seen all these beta games before when I was a kid
GOOD STUFF
Looking at that Blast Corp footage, it’s before Rare had to take an arm off the robot because it exceeded the polygon count.
9:00 the guy talks about Zelda 64 couldent' be posible without the N64's 3D graphics and that it is Miyamoto's next masterpiece, and then says "to top it off, it will be also translated to spanish, wich did happen in the PAL release
@hard4games Is it just me or do the old VHS prototype game graphics always look better than n64 retail releases. I wonder if these were just demos from the "project reality" silicone graphics rigs.
yes almost always is so
I luv Zelda, he mega warrior against Bowser
Zelda is the first hero in video game history to have long hair and shoot arrows
Yeah I do like a Poly Cotton blend, its like the feel of cotton with the shrink resistance of Polyester.
Whenever I dry my clothes I always set it to low heat for an hour and give it a second run if needed. I swear the low heat is better for not shrinking clothes.
Uh
@ Sponsored part
@@Mote. ohhh
i dont know how ive never noticed any footage of Link with a 2-handed sword in the early footage before.
hell i dont know how i never noticed *2 swords* in his hud before. is this the only footage with it?
No, there is more footage with that hud with two swords. As far as i remember thats the second build shown
interesting, the water is using an effect thats unused in the final game that creates waves with a real time generated bump map.
yes seems ps2 graphics
I remember when people said link pulling his sword out as the door slammed was in the “Ice Temple” welp now we know it isn’t.
The breakbeats in this video are so damn good :o
What's the name of the song that starts around 11:04?
there's STILL new beta zelda content being discovered?! I remember way back in 2003, I was flipping back and forth between the scant few screenshots we had, just WISHING I could explore them more!
1:05 KID KIRBY FOOTAGE?! Or is that air ride 64?
14:22 I hope we find out what that red thing is someday
Man this really takes zelda dorkness to the next level.
I think it is the remake of the 1st dungeon of the 1st game due to the blue room and the amount of stalfos and triforce. Ether that or a test.
Imagine if the actual build was found
God I wish
omg the holy grail ever
Would be one of the biggest things to happen to the prototype game scene, OoT was so experimental for its day that there would still be plenty of mysteries left if we got a Zelda 64 build or two. We could get various builds for the regular game and not know anything about Ura Zelda.
@@protocetid ura zelda is fake, is just a expansion like master quest
@@danielbarrios4379 Ura Zelda isn’t fake lol, it’s what MQ was called in Japan. There’s evidence it was a larger expansion at one point.
6:35 best thing to do here would be to make the UI match in both, as its unaffected by lighting in-game. Because the bomb and sword is the same in both scenes, but once you color balanced it it made both icons much bluer.
Not a crazy deal anyway, just different lighting in-game 🤷♀ whatever
I always your videos Tony!
What is the racing game in on the tape at the end of the video?
I'm so hyped for the N64 lol
I love 320x240!!!
What was that Kirby with a backwards hat from????
Kirby's Air Ride. It was cancelled and later released for Gamecube.
When is Starfox 64x2=128 footage going to be released?
i've always wondered, does zelda 64 run at 30 fps or 20? because ocarina of time runs at a capped 20 fps but (idk if its just me) the beta footage looks alot smoother
It's actually sped up.
Speeding footage up gives the illusion it is smoother.
This is a REALLY nice video quality VHS rip, kinda makes me wish N64 emulators had VHS artifacting and blur filters built in so you could get this beta tape/E3 effect. I don't know if the footage of Zelda 64 is slightly sped up to give the illusion of a higher frame rate, or if the more simple visuals of these early builds really just did allow for a more consistent 30. The final Ocarina of Time is clearly locked to 20fps, likely because letting it just cap at 30 would mean you'd be getting frame drops a lot due to how detailed the visuals are for the system. So the devs decided a consistent 20 would be better than a wobbly 30, and I agree.
That first footage of the Triforce in the chest though... may be faked. As in, pre-rendered. Link's dynamic full body shadow and the reflections off the water onto the walls just look WAY too good to be done in real-time on a system as limited as the 64.
The Triforce scene is not likely to be prerendered. Link's dynamic shadow is beta content left in the game cart, the model for the moving water from the Triforce scene was in the SW97 overdump, and the light on the walls effect is used in the final game. It's a very simple scene too.
@@Sauraen Yep this is accurate, it's very unlikely the scene is pre-rendered, as we have a lot of leftover evidence of all of these features existing and being functional at one point or another in-engine.
The dynamic shadows are still used in the game, just not on Link himself. From memory, both beast Ganon and Ganondorf use the effect, as do the snake mirrors in the Spirit Temple. (And about half of Rare's games back then had dynamic shadows, I might add!)
@@Sauraen Wait, is there a video of the moving water somewhere?
@@LegendofLegaia929 This video you're commenting on? :) As well as the earlier versions on Hard4Games' channel.
I wonder if any of this is present in the giga leak
Could the spanish tape being of lower quality be due to aging?
Turok!

1:08 ¿mother 3?!
THUUUROOOK!
Are we positive that we’re positive that this wasn’t fan made?
I'm hungry for bananas 🍌
I wonder did Ocarina of Time start out as a remake of zelda 1?
or maybe heavily inspired
HANDSOME and HARD TONY ❤️❤️😍
👀
9:15 that's actually a lie, OOT never Came translated to Spanish
what the fuck the triforce was real
Very likely just real in a cutscene used for promotional purposes.
I wish someone could find the rom to release or make a hack. I want to play this original version. It was like a grown up version of Zelda on NES or ‘A Link to the Past’. I like ocarina f time but I didn’t like they changed the character (whom, at the time, I didn’t know was a different Link in each game) so I wanted a real sequel, not a reimagining.
i think ocarina of time was originally link to the past heavily similar
seeing early too hehe
holy hell I am early
Not me with the Second Comment lol 😂😂😂
Let him buy the tape - then you rip it - guess you didn’t put your hand in your pocket #awkward #LetsthemPutUpTheMoney😊

I still get excited seeing all the leaks and beta content being discovered after all these years.
