In a New York accent, the o in Bond is like the o in top, which is more open, different from the o in dog or coffee. It sounds like more like ah. We would never say “bawnd” or “tawp.” That sounds weird. Take Don and dawn. These sound (almost exaggeratedly) different. The first is open, the second has that infamous aw sound. New Yorkers are all about distinguishing pairs that sound the same in other dialects.
