What makes paul so good is his experience and insight. He gives you the history and shows you step by step what you need to know. I also like the fact that he is highly practical and shows you the problems that one will run into when using the machine. It makes them not only exceptional but one of a kind and he's clearly the best. Thanks paul for all your hard work and especially your experience and knowledge that you share with everyone. All the best in 2024 and take care. 🎉
Thanks for reminding me to get this one out and use it this winter. It's hiding under a bedsheet in the corner of a garage.
I have been a subscriber for years when this channel started, hands down the most comprehensive snowblower vids on CZcams, second to none. I have learned a lot from Paul about OPE he answers subs questions and genuinely likes to help people. I have quoted him on forums as well. You got me nervous with that sledgehammer to the chute on a brand new machine but it was necessary to prove a point. I had a mid 90's MTD 640F it served me well (with proper maintenance) for nearly 20 years. Happy to hear you're doing well and settling into your new garage space 👍🏼
WOW! Thank you for all you insight and knowledge regarding Snow Blowers. Truly an eye opener. The better you know your machine, the better performance and life span you will receive!
Nice to see you posting again!
Nobody does it better, Paul.
SO great to have you back!!!!!!
Always love your in-depth look at the machines. 👍
Very informative. I've worked un the Power Equopment retail 20 years ago and still have my 13/32 Ariens Pro but good to see these improvements on this line of machines.
Bought this machine recently and your video was really helpful. Thanks Paul!
Thanks Paul for the detailed, thorough walk through. This talked me into picking one up. Lets see how it work out for me.
Thanks for the review Paul, very much appreciated!
I'm not in the market for a new snowblower, but this is a great, informative video. Nicer work! Happy holidays!
Excellent video! I came across this model in my research, and you touched on many of my questions and concerns. I will be discussing this model with my finance director to replace my 21 year old YardMachines blower.
Thanks Paul for the detailed, thorough walk through. I appreciate you sharing your deep experience with us.
Before you buy any snowblower, you need to decide if you want a machine for average conditions in your area, or one that will faithfully handle the once in 20 years awful storm without undue effort or extra time.
Read your manual. Do required maintenance. Don't try to overload the machine, let it clear the snow at a pace where it works well. If they use a lot of salt in your area, try to blow clean snow just before you park your machine. I live in Syracuse NY average annual snowfall around 110 inches per year.
Great walk around Paul! Seems like like Troy Bilt is a great machine for many in the midwest. I bought a Craftsman 26" 2 stage used last winter and only used it 3 times on 4-6" in Northern Illinois, hoping for a big storm this year to run it through the gauntlet
This looks like a really good machine, interestingly the engineers designing snowblowers are still innovating more than ever. It seemed that snowblower technology had reached its peak a decade ago but I'm pleasantly surprised to see continuous improvements. The long skid shoes are a nice touch and I agree with you on the current plastics, they are almost indestructible.
I'll have to keep an eye on my gear drive now, thanks for the info and I don't believe that my gear drive is leaking yet. I bought mine in 06' or 07'. It's been great other than a roll pin fell out, the Buckets side get a little banged up like you said and a little paint is coming off inside of the throat where the stone from my limestone drive way scratch and chip it off. I would probably have tp weigh out the options but would buy a Troybuilt again. Poly never rusts and doesn't dent mine is in great shape.
I have a Troy-Bilt. I like it the very good snow blower
I have a 1997 Yard=Man 9 horse with the plastic chute and haven't ever had an issue. Just tighten the tensioner so the chute doesn't get pushed up by the snow and you're fine.
I live in the Sierra Nevadas between Sacramento and Reno at about 3000 ft and we just got hammered with about 5 ft over the last 8 days. I have a quad with a plow, a Side by side with a plow and a 27 horse tractor. I just used a friends old Craftsman 26 inch snowblower after I got it running and don’t know why I’ve never had a snowblower. Plows are great but my driveway is circular and steep and I run out of places to plow the snow. Same with the tractor, it will only stack it so high and my drive down to my shop is gravel. I don’t tear up the gravel as much with the snow blower as I do with the plows or tractor. I’m looking at getting a snowblower now and I think this brand and model fits the bill.
I have the 2890 model from Winter 2015. Bought at Lowe's with Veterans day and military discount for $989.00 now they're like $1899.00 😅
Thank you for a great walk around for this model. Also looking at the Honda 724. Have you looked at these at all?
Honda. The Honda 2-stage snowblowers production line has been shut down for a year now and it will be at least Sept 2023 before they are available again. If your local Honda dealer does not have one in stock you won't find one. That said, The Honda is terribly over-priced for what you get.
The best choice right now for a 24 inch track snowblower is the Ariens Compact RapidTrak. It has about the same capacity as the Troy-Bilt in this video. It's smaller so it will fit in your garage better and it us very easy to use.
If you want a snowblower that blows the Honda 724 away in performance, price and long life consider the Ariens Platinum 24. It will clear about 50% more snow per hour than the Honda and throw the snow just as far. The Platinum 24 is a wheeled snowblower but all the weight is balanced over the wheels so it has almost as much traction as a tracked snowblower.
Paul, a little over 40 years ago I purchased a Troy Built Tiller, still have it to this day. However, since the 40 years ago purchase the company has been sold out to another, and I believe another and another. I would have pause on purchasing any Troy Built products today. I've a number of friends who have purchased Troy Built Tillers in the past 5 years and it seems most have issues/problems with them.
I like my 40-year-old Troy Built Horse, would not sell it, but I would be eerie to purchase any new Troy Built products.
Just my thoughts...but thanks for the "walkaround review."
Do you know they still make your Horse? It's now called the "Big Red" and other than the engine it's exactly like your old tiller.
And you are correct, the only other Troy-Bilt I recommend is the Super Bronco. The rest all have issues.
The videos you did are fantastic. Im thinking of buying one. I have a deck that sits 8-9 inches off the ground. You think I will have issue getting on it? You mentioned in one of your videos that it can't do stairs.
Yes, the front won't raise up high enough. But, you can go to the lumber yard and get a 24X48 sheet of 3/4 inch exterior plywood and use it as a ramp. That will work well.
Lol apparently you and I are the only ones who care about float mode .
I actually prefer it in float .
Had it on an old Noma and was instantly addicted to track blowers .
I’ve had many many since then but still go back to the track blower as the best I’ve ever had
That one of the reasons why I like the ariens RapidTrak so well. It's always in float mode.
Thanks for the review , Paul. I hope you are doing well. Looks like a good machine. I have a few friends and relatives who have fallen Ill and can no longer blow their own driveways or afford to pay to have it done so I am going to do it for them from now on. I have a Troy Bilt Storm 2420 that I really like but not sure how long it will hold up doing 5 good size driveways. I don’t really have the money for a commercial blower. Would this snowblower be a good option ? What snowblowers can you recommend in the $1500 range that would hold up to that amount of use?
If you are now using a 2420 and want a track snowblower I recommend the Ariens Compact RapidTrak. It will be a lot faster than this Troy-Bilt and a lot easier to use. You can get it at Lowes for around $1900.
If you want a wheeled snowblower I suggest the Ariens Deluxe 24 or 28. They are a good heavy-duty snowblower that will last you years. They are also much higher capacity than this Troy-Bilt so they will be a lot faster. The 24 is about $1450 and the 28 is about $1550
Hi Paul, thanks for all your reviews. I purchased an ST330P on your recommendation about eight years ago, but it was destroyed when a tree fell on my shed during hurricane Fiona. So I'm on the market for a new one. I haven't see you do a review of the Husqvarna ST 430. Will you be doing a review on it, or do you recommend it?
If you liked your ST330P you will love the 430. Much larger engine, EFI and onboard key start! Did your 330 have a hydrostatic transmission? The 430 does.
I have the ST430T here with that engine and it's been flawless. Over-the-top power and it starts every time no matter what the temperature is.
There are other snowblowers from Ariens and Toro that have more capacity but the ST430 is very competitive with them and priced right for the machine. Like I said, If you liked your 330 you will love the 430!
@@PaulSikkema Thanks for the quick response, Paul. I looked for Ariens here, but so far, I haven't found a local dealer, and I like having the added protection of local repairs.
Thank you for the video, so this actually comes with oil in it is that correct? This is the first machine I've bought in a long time that hasn't just come with a bottle of oil.
On a side note I'm Canada where I am gas stations are not allowed to advertise ethenol levels anymore. So we literally have no idea how much ethanol is in our fuel. I just make sure I don't leave gas in my machines for any length of time.
Yes, these are shipped upright on a pallet so the engine has oil in it. If you see any grease spots on the pallet be sure to check the oil. Change that oil after 5 hours of run time.
sorry for double commenting but do you know a way to adjust the idle on this machine? Mine kinda sputtering at full open choke and full throttle. If I adjust the choke slightly and the throttle every so slightly it purrs like I'd expect.
These carbs are not adjustable so having to use the choke to smooth them out is normal. Snowblower engines have been this way for many years. I find running about 1 tablespoon of SeaFoam per liter of fuel helps.
@@PaulSikkema thank you for the reply. I've never had to purchase a snow blower before so it's all new.
How would this handle snow in the North East, we live in Southern Maine. The snow here tends to be heavy and wet on occasion, I also need to clear space for my dog.
This is not the best choice for your area. This snowblower has a 12 inch impeller and can struggle with your heavy/wet snow. I suggest a Toro Power Max HD or an Ariens Deluxe/Platinum/Pro instead.
Thank you
Paul, I have an older 2890 storm tracker. And was having steering issues on my trac. I took it in to get it repaired and the large wheel on the trac was cracked on the inside. I had it repaired/replaced at a dealer. I like to do most work on it myself. So I ordered another part so I can do the other side as well but can not find any videos on how to remove the trac to work on any parts that need repair or replacement. Do you have any videos on removing the trac from these Troy bilt machines.
No I don't but.
1. Tip the snowblower up on it's nose.
2. Remove the rod at the very back that holds both tracks in alignment.
3. Remove the rear idler wheel
4. Remove the rubber track
5. The main drive wheel is attached to the axle just like the wheel on any MTD snowblower. Just remove the bolt on the end and pull the old one off. The axle/rim tends to rust together so you may have beat/pry it off.
6. Replace everything in the reverse order.
@@PaulSikkema
Paul thanks very much..

Paul, I just wanted to let you know that I followed your instructions and it was a pretty simple repair job. I was worried about how difficult it would be but it went very smooth. It was very hard to get the nut of the back wheel. I just used my Milwaukee M18 impact gun and it came right off as well as with the large wheel I was replacing. It seems like these big plastic wheels seem to fail quite easily just so you know. My machine is from 2015 and is not abused at all. I wonder if leaving the machine in transport mode causes to much stress on the wheels so moving forward I will be dropping the bucket down to the floor for storing it.
Looks identical to the 2023 Storm 2820 except tracks instead of wheels.
Paul how easy it that machine to push when it's not under power?
If you lock the front up and then pull both both steering levers it's not too bad moving it around the garage. In the summer I usually sit track drive snowblowers on a furniture dolly so they are easy to move. Here's one www.harborfreight.com/24-in-x-16-in-1000-lb-capacity-solid-deck-hardwood-dolly-59309.html
That 272 cc engine. Are they part of the LCT brand of engines that Husqvarna was using several years ago? Or are they something else?
Husqvarna is still using LCT engines.
Stanley, Black & Decker/MTD/Troy-Bilt uses their own engines. Originally they were called PowerMore but today they just have the name of the brand they are mounted on. i.e., Troy-Bilt in this case.
whats the horsepower on this model?
Love the tracks, but hate the lack of agility. Especially how you have to turn it on just to move it.
This video is really long so it's easy to miss this point. Go to 04:40 and I show you how easy this one is to move with the power off.
can the 928 Toro handle the slush?
There is no snowblower on the market that can handle slush as well as snow but the 928 does a better job than this Troy-Bilt
Just order this snow blower so we will see how it goes.
when back in stock, I'm getting one
I'm still using a craftsman from the 60s
Tracks are garbage! In my experience they never work right and have crappy bearings and the auger gear is aluminum not brass and wears out! MTD always built crap and continues too!
Your comments apply to the old Husqvarna 1830 EXLT? They certainly don't apply to any of the U.S. made track snowblowers made today.
