  • There's a brand new Light Sport Airplane hitting the market-- The Colt. Dan Millican (@SFilmsTakingOff) sits down with Caio Braga and pilot Matt Wells to talk about what sets this LSA apart from others. The plane is designed by Caio Jordao from Brazil but manufactured in Hondo, Texas. It features two models, with the upscale one having leather interior, ballistic parachute and full Dynon glass avionics.

    Useful load is about useless. I love it when they say oh we build it for the older pilots who have lost their medicals. Well a LARGE portion of us also weigh over 200 lbs and these s-lsa have a useful load of one person, full fuel and maybe a jacket

      @@TakingOff In the interview they state they are marketing the plane to flight school.The Cessna 172 is a popular aircraft for U.S flight schools. Unfortunately the U.S. does not have many Sport Pilot training Schools or Flying Clubs like Australia does for example. In Britain, Australia and New Zealand flying is more affordable than the U. S. due to the number of soaring clubs(gliders) and Sport Pilot Aero clubs. I wish the U.S. would catch up.

    • @TakingOff
      @TakingOff  Před 3 lety +1

      I would agree the US doesn’t have a strong sport/glider presence. But I did all my private in 150’s and 152’s. While the 172 is the most popular airplane made, my point was that you did the comparison above between the Colt and a 172. The Colt is a two seater and the 172 a four seater. Of course the payloads are better in the four seater.

      look. underneath it all this is a rather basic airplane, the leather and the glass panel are to justify a price near or north of $200k. the whole idea of the light sport was to get a plane in at a price point that a lawyer or accountant could afford them without depending on his inheritance from rich uncle joe. The making it in the US thing deals with high US duties on certain categories of imports and parts. The few pictures of the plane under construction make it look like a typical metal airframe, these are expensive to assemble due to too many parts and slow assembly, i.e. rivets. The Gruman/American planes were metal but used novel assembly procedures, i.e. glue. Composites are nice but they can get expensive as well and aren't light.
      The idea of an electric plane is kind of putting the carriage b4 the horse. Until you can take off using about 8 D cells, it ain't too practical. the engine and full tanks in my Cardinal weight about 800#s, that buys me over 500 nm of range with reserves for 4 average passengers (skinny ones), the electric motor is lighter but the batteries are a fat bitch and currently they'll get you alone (weight restrictions) off and up to 5000' at which time you need to land.
      By the way, had my johnson wrapped in leather, looked really nice but my wife said it felt like a horse. (how she knows how a horse feels is a question I won't ask).
