  • Rebuild of one of the last Mini models which originally went down the production line in October 2000. This is a Mini Cooper Sport 500 model and as the name suggests this end of production model had a run of just 500. It's been well looked after during its life but before the unavoidable Mini rust took hold AM Restorations of Plympton (near Plymouth) were contracted for a body strip down and complete restoration.

      It gets a lot of attention these days Clark. It always did really but now more than ever because Minis just aren't about any longer and those that are aren't quite like this one.
      John.

      Surprisingly Mini Life, the 500 model cars have a good survival rate. Andy Mynott runs a Mini Cooper Sport 500 Register (I have a video with Andy talking about the cars on here somewhere) and about 350 survivors are on the register.

      @@Car_and_classic_lover Yes, it's been used at least once a week all year around up until the Black Death came upon us all and then we disconnected the battery for a few months and exclusively used our TR7. We have an air leak in the injection system somewhere that has been hard to trace and that has been upsetting tickover speeds but other than that all is well. I need to deal with a stone chip on the bonnet at some stage but otherwise the good ol' Mini looks just the same as when we picked her up from A.M. Restorations.

    I used to have a Mini Cooper 500, number 450 out of the 500, bought brand new from Caffyns Rover. It was the best thing that had ever happened to me. Then I met a girl.....

    Was this a full renno? ie inside and out?? looks great and I am in the market to have my 97 restored..

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  Před 8 lety +1

      +Bill Kingdom The inside has been kept immaculate so didn't need any work other than a clean. The bodywork did end up being a full restoration where every bit of rot, however minor, was cut out and invisibly repaired or a complete new panel put in. This wasn't the intention initially but if you're paying people as good as this to get things done we decided we might as well get it done properly once and for all. It's now properly built and rust proofed.

    I have to ask. How did she get out of the car after putting it in there?

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  Před 6 lety

      Surprisingly there is still quite a lot of room in there but it does really require navigating the Mini over to one side meaning there is sufficient room to get out on the other. The Mini is 10ft 3in long and the garage is 11ft x 6ft so as long as you ain't a fatty, there's plenty of room really.

    Will the value of these go through the roof in the future?

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  Před 4 lety

      The good ones already have. Many are still popping up and being offered with delivery mileage but in our experience these are merely paperweights unless you want to spend a lot of money on recomissioning. A profesionally restored 500 would be my recommendation if looking for one but you'll need to check it thoroughly regardless just like you do with every Mini.

      @aleddavies770 Před 4 lety

      John Clancy Will the values keep on climbing?

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  Před 4 lety

      @@aleddavies770 They're already pretty ridiculous so it's hard to know. But we are probably all worried that classic car owners and the £6bn industry could be hit badly next week depending on what happens but that will be the least of our problems if communism does take control. Assuming democracy wins in some form then the humble Mini should continue to be extremely sought after and with the 500 being arguably the best Mini ever produced they surely won't do too badly in the future. Values of some older classics (Triumph TR6 for example) are falling back now but the Mini is the most iconic British car of all time which should be a major factor in its favour. Having said all this, I can tell you that the Sportspack Mini Cooper is not best suited for our potholed and speed ramped modern roads. These cars ride like go-karts so they're really harsh on bad surfaces.

      It's a '500' Philip. This means it's a valuable car and not a simple run-of-the-mill Mini. It was bloody cold the day it was sprayed last February. But thank you for your comments anyway.

      You probably have two choices, either buy a rusty one and have it rebuilt for several thousand pounds or buy a newly rebuilt version with new metal parts and pay accordingly. Keeping it completely dry at all times is crucial though...

  • @markellis4229
    @markellis4229 Před 4 lety

    Probably just as cheaper buying a brand-new shell from bmh

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  Před 4 lety

      Surprisingly it was actually a lot cheaper getting the existing shell repaired and had the added advantage of no danger of losing the body number or even having a new VIN number foisted on us. This has happened to some when a classic car has been re-shelled and the DVLA have found out.

    • @markellis4229
      @markellis4229 Před 4 lety

      OK. The current law says that if you re-shell a car you must use a brand new shell from the original manufacturer and have a receipt to prove it.
      However, if you choose to use a rust-free or fully restored 2nd hand shell, it's best not to talk about it on here, or on anywhere really, then you will probably have no problems.
      There is a petition to gov't to allow re-shelling for classic cars which it is hoped will regularise the situation.
      The cautionary note must be that if you re-shell with a 2nd hand shell and are found out, then the car will be crushed (at worst).

      @@markellis4229 I can't divulge that Mark because it would not be fair on Andy Moss and his A.M. Restorations business. We were very pleased with the competitive invoice considering the top-notch workman and workmanship that went into it. We're a number of years down the road now and we have had to use the Mini in awful weather at times but I can report that the body still looks perfect.
