In response to our report on The Last of Us Remastered running slower on PS4 Pro compared to original hardware, Naughty Dog has released a new update to address our concerns. There's an excellent level of optimisation here, but 1080p users aren't happy...

who fucking care about a couple 3fps drops
arkham sky pc gamers who want to bash console users. ps im pc gamer and really dont care about frames that much
AutomaticHD
When talking frames, you're talking performance. Saying you don't care about frame rates is literally saying that you don't care if your game lags on offline mode (or stutters, which what usually happens alongside lags)
from what i've gathered from watching digital foundry. framerate drops are barely noticable if the refresh rate is adapted to match the frame rate drop.
but if the refreshrate locked at a solid 60Hz even the smallest frame rate drops make the game feel choppy and shuddery.
problems usually occur when the frame rate isnt cleanly divisible by the refresh rate. hence why a smooth 30fps can be better than an inconsistent 60fps. as 60Hz divided by 30fps is 2
khalid maged
Do you care if your game is choppy and laggy, even when on offline mode? High framerates= high performance. Low framerates= low performance
+AutomaticHD It's fucking stupid to not care about FPS. It's incredibly important for smooth gameplay.
Framerate over resolution, that's what everyone told me here!
High Quality Shadows is the worst compromise I've ever heard. Shadows are literally the last thing I care about in terms of a games graphics
Besides, it only takes a look outside the window to notice that real shadows mostly look blurry, like low-quality setting. You'd have to have a light source directly behind a person to get sharp shadows. Sun doesn't work like that.
I think shadows, lighting, tessellation and anti-aliasing make a game LOOK realistic, nothing else.
Not exactly. Shadow softness varies, based on how far the cash shadow is from the caster. So, shadows that a person's legs would cast would be way sharper than the shadow that the head would cast. Not many games do this correctly.
And Shadows are always the most impacting on performance besides AA. That's always the case if you want frames just tune those two down bum you have your frames back!
It doesn't necessarily make them look realistic (look at games like Yooka-Laylee), but just makes the world look nicer.
Not sure why they didn't just drop it to 1440p or 1600p instead of 1800p for the 1080p mode
That would be a better solution indeed. Keep the high quality shadows, and have some kind of super sampling. The best of both worlds for 4K users and 1080p users.
They don't need to drop it to 1440p. According to DF the performance is now solid at 1800p, there's absolutely no reason it can't be super sampled from 1800p in 1080p mode.
Robert Gamble Did you watch the video? The 1800p mode doesn't use high quality shadows, and still has some drops here and there (although improved over the original patch).
So what? 1800p mode runs as good/better than 1080p on a standard PS4. No one is buying a Pro for slightly better shadows.
There's no need for 1440p , if 1440p was necessary then the 1800p mode wouldn't exist at all.

*NAUGHTY DOG = LAZY ASSES*
cant wait to play this on my ps5 re-remaster with my remaster Last of Us 2.
Sad but true. I'm hesitant to get any other games for my PS4 as they'll no doubt be re-released at some point remastered.
@@leegsy what does sony do with re releases
Native 4k 60fps is very likely.
Seeing how TLoU2 is being received right now: Not too likely.
they are just going to update ps5 firmware so it can play ps4 games and they going to enhance the game released another update for free or should be free. naughty dog should do what some of the developers are doing gives us ps5 last of us 2 for free...
just give us the graphical option.
Actually they are, if you really think about it. They have hard drive, cpu, gpu, operating system. Sata connectivity internally.
Graphical options. Your saying the developers can't give us graphics options cause its not a pc. If this thing is capable of outputting native 4k (on few titles) and others 1800p, why do you think they can't just give us guys with 2560x1440p monitors the options to just play at that? Oh they can, and like you stated, its not a pc. This thing is built for 2560x1440. To run flawlessly in my opinion.
Some games offer it on console. Don't see why all devs don't just follow through.
Rene Pena As this video states, the PS4 Pro version of Rise of the Tomb Raider already has such options in place and they work great, allowing users to choose the kind of experience they want out of their PS4 Pro: Do they want more or less the same visuals as the base PS4 but at 60 FPS? Or do they prefer running the game at 4K upscaled at 30 FPS? Or do they just want enhanced visuals at 1080P 30? Other PS4 Pro titles could use this level of customizability, it doesn't have to be at PC levels of options but ROTTR levels of options in more games would be appreciated by PS4 Pro users (most likely).
Devin Money exactly man! Nick Nguyen I completely understand. Just imagine what this thing can do at an all 1440p resolution option! I bet it can hit that resolution at 60fps! And if not that, I bet with a frame rate thats unlocked, would hit high 50s if nothing, and which is damn right still playable. In my opinion.
Now we need a 4k 60fps patch with High Quality Shadows for PS5
Wow, ND did good on one thing and screwed in another.
The beauty of developing on 2 concurently closed systems with varying performance levels... It's a shame, maybe an oversight on ND's part. Maybe patch 1.09 will bring downscaled supersampled image back? Hopefully...
Marius Urucu I'm sure they will.
this generation is a mess.
m00sician (●`・(エ)・´●)
Yep, it's a mess. You do understand that games received patches last gen as well right. People just didn't know or care as much. Nowadays people play the comment section more than they do their damn games.
What bothers me the most is that a lot of people here in the comments aren't even that tech savvy. Yet this is a tech savvy channel...
And because of this, there are fanboys who spread lies and misinformation regarding hardware specifics, when they don't even know what the heck are they talking about. And I hate those kind of people.
And now they have to bicker about which box is better rather than focus on actual games... because it's not like AAA gaming industry isn't trying to squeeze every penny from our pocket for mediocre cash grabs, season passes, Day 1 DLC and microtransactions... oh no sirey boss.
I'm guessing u didn't watch Sonys E3 Conference and PSX ?
m00sician xD
I know. Just play it on PS3 and you'll be happy.
This makes no sense at all. If they optimized 1800p for 4k screens, why can't they just let 1080p users have the same experience? They fixed all their problems obviously but removed pretty much all real benefits for 1080p users. Can't really wrap my head around why they went this route.
Gehab they want you to buy the pro come on man capitalism
1:11 jeez, being in the middle of playing this game on Grounded difficulty, seeing all that wasted ammo is quite harrowing.
Playing through this game again on Grounded difficulty after the announcement of Part II.. God, I forgot how much I missed this game... 😍😍
Did you like the last of us part 2?
@@siddharthkhattar1297 YES!!
@@AnalogFoundry wish I could've liked it too😔
Pretty sure it would run at 60 fps with high quality shadows at 1440p. Why go for 1080p instead?
BowGunner Why do that? They improved performance at 1800p.
They went from 1800p low quality shadows to 1080p high quality shadows. It's very likely 1440p with high quality shadows would still deliver a locked 60 fps.
People bitched about 5 frames dropped from 60... this is what we get.
***** dropping 5 fps from 60 is hardly noticeable. Dropping 5 froms 30, is intolerable.
Ηλιας Χρυσοπουλος We've got the same name and I'm greek too lol.
Just hearing the music from the game makes me want to play it again and gives me shivers. God damn what a beautiful game, I don't own a PS4 but as soon as I get one I'm getting through this again.
love the musical score for last of us with the guitar
Why can't they just put an option to choose however you'd like it... ffs
wielkus That's what I'm saying...
wielkus get a PC, you always get that option
I have a semi good PC, I have those options and I'm happy but I still want to buy PS4 Pro next year and I still want those options on PS4
pc owner here but i'm still considering buying a ps4 pro. if not for those pesky, meddling (good) exclusives, buying a console wouldn't even cross my mind.
Because 1 of the advantages of console gaming is ease of use. You have all the options in the world for PC gaming, but it can take upwards of 6 hours just to start a game (not always the case of course) you bought to "Play the way you want". Not to mention a 4-10 hour download because it's a digital purchase. :(
There we have the 1080p/60fps combo and a solid one! and people still complain really?
marco sas it's a downgrade
marco sas on a ps3 game
people were demanding 1080/60 over 2160/30, now they have it (in fact they have both). Downgrade is in resolution, but that's precisely what people here wanted, and it's an upgrade in terms of shadows
first people complain about the FPS. ND fixes it. Now they complain its not 4k! unbelievable.
marco sas 1080p mode didn't have all the detail previously and now not sure if it does
Thank God.. this is the only reason I still had my original PS4 in my closet and was contemplating returning the PS4Pro. Did not want to have to deal with lower FPS in last of us with a system that's way more powerful.
Hey Nick930 4 years later
Subbed. You guys are good.
Just don't look at the comments too much lol
WH250398 Yeah, the comments are filled with fanboys.
Lord Kacperov morons*
Comon guys.. it's 1800p 60FPS, and 2160p (Native 4k) 30 FPS... Naughty Dog is the best Game Development
ACEO Trần Gotta love Uncharted 4's 30fps!
definitely a locked 60fps on ps5 for the 1800p60fps mode
sony after sony after sony. DIGITALSONYFOUNDRY.

John Wayne because Sony is the only Publisher doing something this fall
What is there to talk about from MS?

Bilguun Nyamaa they already released that vid.
Am I the only one who never noticed jagged edges on The Last of Us (so picky)
I think you might be confusing DF for a game reviewing channel... This channel is catered for tech/software analysis.
You can think a dirt simulator may be the greatest game you've ever played, though that still has nothing to do with this channel. But if you were to measure and compare the resolution of that dirt simulator...
iTouchin I get the point, I do know how this channel works ;)
shawn byers the only way to notice that is pausing the game every 10 sec to see the edge lol
jaime rodriguez Yeh 😅
I rather have teh supersampling than the high shadows. Shadows just kills framerates for no reason. No one pays attention to shadows when playing.
***** I mean for the sake of gameplay. Why have it at high at the cost of frame rate? No reason to do so.
Reason over Dogma I agree, most PC games I leave at Ultra except shadows I set to medium/high in most games. I've seen shadows eat up vram with very little visual difference between med/high/ and ultra. Ultra shadows is simply not worth the performance compromise. I think same with 4x AA as well, I just use 2x at 1440P to keep FPS up around 60.
hababacon same here. I Have bf1 and a 970. Shadows kills my frame rate and I like to play 100fps. So I bump it down to medium. Along with a few other settings.
In games like Witcher 3 and etc... Shadows are must have. Games with huge amount of foliage need great shadows.
***** Why are they a must have? Just curious why they are.
PS4 Pro is the biggest waste of money of all time
you can play the last of us part 2 on the base model of the PS4, so your argument isn't valid.
jordocondi you can play that on the regular PS4 so it's still not worth it
My 4k TV with HDR says it is worth it.
is good to put auto output for ps4 pro ??
Have you heard of pc.
It's the biggest waste of space and money. Basically web browser machine. Irrelevant trash.
No 1.09 patch analysis? Sounds like that added more options.
Interesting how you still refuse to show us the native 4k performance in resource intensive areas
How hard is to put option in the game menu 1080p/30FPS, 1080p/60FPS, 2160p/30FPS and that's it!!!!
AwesomeManny The game cant run at native 4k and locked 60fps. Instead it does 1800p and locked 60fps now with the new update. It dropped like 5 fps before the update. 1800p is still a noticeable difference from 1080p
Nah. I rather 1080p locked at 60fps
i have a decent sony 4k tv and the tv itself does a great job upscaling the 1080 and not just TLOU, i have a ps4 pro but if the option is available in a game, i'll always opt for framerate over resolution, as that in and of itself seems to create a sharper image through refresh rate alone..
@@StayFractalesque which model?
@@manveerghuman5276 I have a sony 55x850d .. pretty sure that tv is going on 5 years old and it's still awesome, great HDR and the color is very nice.. I used to work in retail and I bought the store display model for 500 bucks when the newest model came out and we had to replace it.. it's capable of 120hz native as well, so the ps5 should look awesome on it..
@@StayFractalesque that sounds like a really good deal. Sony have that trilumnous colour palette that makes everything look better, since the tv is showing its age just crank up the colour and brightness in the settings for the PS5. I have the X900F 65" and for games it should look the same.
Nah, I'd rather a crisp 4k image with a steady 30 FPS.
does the 60fps 1800p checkerboard / upscale to 4K as most other games do or does it rely on the 4K TV to upscale to 4K?
With all the amazing exclusives coming to ps4 in 2017!
I only hope df can keep up!
As of a few days ago, they finally added the supersampling back there is now two modes for PS4 pro, one with super sampling and one with better shadows
Can we get an update for 1.11
I have forgotten how beautiful this game looks. It's good to be a Playstation console owner.
too much hassle for the PS4 Pro ... I will never get it...
just make every game @ 1080p with 60fps
well, asking a ps4 user to pay 400 bucks with slightly upgrade graphic... is pretty hard, unless I dont own any ps4
1080P 60fps on every game ain't possible because CPU is too weak.
the 2.3x bump in GPU performance is only part of the picture, every frame draw requires input from the CPU as well, and the CPU only got a modest clock speed increase. many games currently targeting 30FPS could easily run into a CPU bottleneck when trying to aim for 60FPS. so instead extra GPU performance is used for a resolution bump because that doesnt put any additional burden on the CPU.
The point of the ps4 pro also is that the original can't do most games at 1080p 60fps
Chazzy Chaz you are the problem with gaming atm, options are a good thing, period.
thank u for the info well i love my ps4 pro on 4k tv looks freaking aweome
Denise Rhodus this is a PS3 game
Could be a ps1 game, it's still freaking awesome
4k TV is doing most of the work, even Xb1 upscales to 4k and looks great.
Alex Handro um no the Xbox one S upscale from 720p and the pro upscales from 1440p-1800p looks way better
It won’t happen but I wish there was a patch on PS5 to allow for high texture shadows with 1800p
You got your wish it's 70$ good luck
@@smgofdvld 🤣
Well fullHD users might not have supersampling any more, but they have a locked 60 fps experience in every situation which even the basic ps4 failed to deliver. I'd say this is an improvement and a reasonable approach. You just gotta love those 60 fps.
0:17 did he just say 1800p?
Yep! 1800p is the native resolution when running in 60fps mode on PS4 Pro. But only for 4K TV users, after this patch.
Gaming ZT Yes..and?
DigitalFoundry
Wow I'm not really familiar with such a resolution, but throughout the video, I get the concept!
Thank you!
1800p(3200x1800p) to native 4k is like 900p to 1080p
6utS not really lol
All along I thought it was a bit silly to categorically state that the PS4 Pro ran "worse" when the PS4 Pro ran the version 1.07 1080p 60fps mode at a few fps below the regular PS4. Didn't the v1.07 superior image from super sampling on the PS4 Pro version not count for anything? Another way of looking at it is if I had a PC set up to run a game at ultra settings compared to low settings and there was only a few percent fps difference would we still say that the ultra settings mode ran worse?
what happened to "plug and play" ?
u can still do that but u have the options in ur hands if u want to change something
best response to a comment ever
+World End Or you could buy a pre built PC? Oh wow you gotta download steam such a hassle.... hahaha. A game doesnt take 10 hours to download? Your internet sucks.
*****
I was talking about PC? Who said PC was plug and play? You're just another mindless idiot on the internet who spurts their misinformed bullshit on a topic they know nothing about. Go have fun with your non upgradable, weak console and keep paying your cooperate overlords to access your own internet! ;)
***** yes one bad game defines a platform said everyone *cough* *cough* *cough* just cause 3
is an occasional drop to 55 fps that big a deal?
BigSqueezy it's not a big deal anymore, they fixed it... And we're still running at 1800p
So... They fixed the Pro performance of the game during the 60fps mode, but we can't downsample that because....?
It just seems strange. I thought they undid 1.07 as a half-measure until performance was sorted. But if performance is sorted now then what's the deal?
ShehzaanA Abdulla
So people can have something to rage over while they continue to try and fix what people are raging over for the next patch.
The downsample isn't that much better to be honest it's pointless for 1080p users
The downsample looked absolutely fantastic.
Jamie Robert Whilst that my be true, I'd also say higher resolution shadows don't make that much of a difference either. So it's curious that there isn't at least some downsampling in play, either from 1800p with low-res shadows, or from a lower resolution like 1440p, but with hi-res shadows.
ShehzaanA Abdulla naughty dog wanted to make a more tailored experience for 1080p users as super sampling is a bit of a lazy approach
The Pro should have had absolutely no problem in running any game at a sustained 30FPS minimum at whatever resolution (up to 4k). The promise of the console was never 4K at 60fps, but to offer decent 4K output or scaling for those who have bought these new panels. The pro providing a "boost" of performance at 1080p output is actually not in the best interest of Sony - this would basically make standard PS 4's outdated. They need to keep a minimum level of parity (which would be 1080p @30/60 depending on the developer's target fps) in order to be fair to the consumer.
Well, I for one am VERY happy with this patch as a 1080p HDTV user! Why? FINALLY a rocksolid 60fps!😀 this matters most to me and is really all I wanted from this game
I had this thought, and I decided to check the comment section to see if I was the only one thinking about it and it turns out I'm not the only one.
Basically, I don't get why they would eliminate downsampling entirely from the equation, they could have just had the game drop to 1440p or something like that, give the high quality shadows, and have the game run at 60fps, I doubt that downsampling from 1440p to 1080p while giving the higher quality shadows would actually impact performance by that much.
And before the guy who keeps saying "Why bother? They improved performance at native 1800p"
I'll note this: not everyone's got a 4k TV to take advantage of native 1800p, not to mention the fact that non-native resolutions on a monitor generally don't look as good unless the resolution happens to be higher than native, you get stretched pixels or blurriness when running a lower than native res on a higher res display.
For people with 1080p TVs, they're missing out on the benefits of downsampling like the reduction in shimmering among other visual improvements.
They should have at least added the option to have the game run at 1440p in the 1080p 60fps mode, allowing for the best of both worlds, high framerate, less shimmering, better image quality and better shadow quality.
Not like this completely matters to me, I'm a PC gamer, I have these options at my fingertips all the time, I just think that people should have the option to do that if they so desire.
Seriously disappointed that you called the Bloater a "giant Clicker"...
icy1007 but it is a giant clicker
icy1007 yeah they are essentially just big clickers. They are clickers that have been around for a while and have grown bigger. They just call them bloaters because of that...
They call them bloaters because they're bloated with spores and spit/hurl them.
Damn upgrading a 720p game to native 4k, that's what we call a remaster, nearly every exclusive should have that option, especially uncharted trilogy and God of war 3 which could be easily benefited by PS4 pro horsepower and can easily run in native 4k 30 fps
So far, PS4 pro's performance doesn't justify its price and it's not enough reason to upgrade. More resolution at the cost of frame rate? No, thanks.
Smart man. I appreciate you. You the best Another one.
Nice improvements, you're not going to notice the extra jagged edges at all on the 1080p mode.
Bravi Naughty Dog.
Just a question for TLOU players: how's the max stick sensitivity? Is it enough for someone who plays pretty much every FPS with the highest sensitivity?
They've basically removed the benefits of the Pro for 1080p users. and it looks like there's no real reason to have done this.
Bullshit. The game now has a genuine 60FPS mode. Higher res option would be nice, though 1080P locked 60FPS is greatly appreciated.
Samba Oz it was 1080p 60fps in the standard PS4!
It had an uneven framerate - it *targeted 60fps on the launch model. There's a big difference - it now holds 60fps. Jerkiness and uneven controller response gone.
Samba Oz it hit a stable 60fps on the standard PS4 at 1080p. it was the Pro that it struggled to get a stable 60fps frame rate until patch 1.08. Watch the previous Digital Foundry video on it.
Hugo Stiglitz
They literally explain how it performed better on the standard PS4. Now it performs just as well on the Pro. Ran at 60fps 108- pn standard. No benefit with the Pro.
I love digital foundry there like rtings but for video games such detail and quality/time is put into there videos!
This is what people get for bitching. Drops to 54fps instead of constant 60fps and what do they have to do? Drop the resolution from 1800p to 1080p just to get that 6 little frames per seconds people wouldn't stop whining about. As a PC gamer I see dips of 10fps or more in certain areas all the time. I rarely ever notice.
Just give us options Naughty Dog. Removal of edge shimmer via super sampling was glorious. Why in the world would you limit choices with more powerful hardware????
WHo the hell is even looking at shadows when playing? SSAA makes a bigger difference and the 4K mode seems to work well in 60fps mode.
They really should make a menu with a couple of toggles to turn on what options you like.
This is why PC gamers like detailed options menus.
I would choose 2880x1620 60fps low quality shadows if this was a PC Game.
Also, Why do not much games use Dynamic Res, would help this game alot in its 60fps mode.
They fixed it. Now there are 3 (or 4 if you want) modes. Nice!
So, with Patch 1.09:
1. They just need to bring back the downsampling of 1800p to HDTV (1080p)
2. Fix the bug in high quality shadow.
The system naysayers have to realize that none of these games were made specifically for the system. They were basically modded to take advantage of the extra power in the quickest way possible. It looks like GT Sport is going to be the first game programmed with the Pro in mind, to take full advantage of the extra processing power. Just like any system launch in the past, even if this one is somewhat incremental, it takes time for developers to code efficiently for it.
If you want a great example of a current developer taking advantage of the Pros extra horsepower, take a look at Hitman. They went back and added higher resolution textures, shadows, better draw distance, AA, AF and rendered it natively at 1440p, with an upscale to 4K. It looks incredible! NBA 2k17 also looks phenomenal, and that is running at a native 4K at 60fps. Battlefield 1, Ratchet & Clank and Watchdogs also look nice.
2017 is going to be the year of the Pro, with some incredible games coming out that take advantage of the hardware. Horizon Zero Dawn, GT Sport, Days Gone, For Honor, Mass Effect, etc..
Then, the Scorpio will come out with even more power and have its own growing pains. Once it hits its stride, the PS5 will come out and so forth. Always going to be new hardware and developers learning to take advantage of it. You just have to be patient with each and enjoy the ride and the great games, as they come.
Badboy Studios, Inc Yea and as soon as they make PS4 Pro Exclusivity locked games, ima enjoy the backlash and the fall of Sony ^^
I'll stick to the regular PS4 and my PC, thanks. PS4 Pro is a waste of money right now and a big risk. You speak of optimization but only the future will tell.
Crash Bandicoot Remaster analysis when? Just asking.
1800p 60fps for me, thanks so much guys!
RIBBERCAGE me too, and now flawlessly at that!
RIBBERCAGE same here man smoothness over shadows works for me
? Who else saw The Last Of Us Part 2's trailer
looks dope
sad face
patch 1.09 came out in sept 2017 which gives you more options for Ps4 pro owners
I'm still waiting for games such as Horizon and Days Gone. Then we can finally see if games designed for the Pro can run smoothly.
I think he means games that come out after the pro released so there will be better optimizing of the games.
^ What I meant to say.
+Sophie Sykes FFXV started development 10 years ago and The Last Guardian started development about 7 or 8 years ago. I think he means games like Day's Gone, Spider-Man, The Last of Us part 2, and God of War. Games that won't release until next year or a couple years down the line.
Well, I am not happy with the PS4 hardware. As for the main APU, I would have liked to see PUMA or PUMA+ cores used in the CPU part (more power-efficient and higher IPC). The GPU part is what shocks me. It is apparent, that they are not using POLARIS 10, but a different maybe even a GCN1.2-type core. How do I know that? Well it is all about the power consumption. Polaris 10 is on par with Maxwell (well maybe even better, if we take into account the silicon lottery). The power consumption of the PS4 pro is simply to high for having a POLARIS 10 GPU (the GPU itself only draws 110W and it was shown to draw even less... like 90-95W). Using a POLARIS 10 chip with higher clocks (let´s say 1,05GHz) would make PS4 pro more powerfull, it would reduce the power consumption and we would not have these types of problems. I don´t like the fact, that there is not an AM1 two-core APU with its own system RAM just for the operating system. It would cost only like 30-40 dollars more, but, you would have reduced the idle power consumption and you would have full 8 cores and 8GB of RAM for games.
This is all thanks to the users bitching in Digital Foundry comments for the 1.07 patch article. Let's say thanks guys...
i'd have to agree here. you can't please everyone. except me cuz i play on 1800 60fps and i love it ;)
Lol I have a 4K tv as well, so
It doesn't affect me. Sucks for you whiny 1080p owners over a few dropped frames
Yeah!!! troll those 1080p losers!!! That'll learn em'!!!!!
Teach them? I don't have to teach them shit!
Naughty Dog did that for me!
I guess the sarcasm didn't ooze enough from my comment. lol
When you say the resolution is 1800p in this and other PS4 Pro games, what do you mean by that? Does it mean that the resolution is a native 1800p which then checkerboard up to 2160p? or does it mean that the resolution checkerboard up to 1800p which is less than an actual native 1800p? I'm really confused about many of your analyses and as a subscriber for your channel I would like to get a clear answer to my question, please.
These high quality shadows are ridicolous. It´s a shame they never fixed them
The HDR in this is completely messed up but DF said nothing about it :/.
Ahh. Sounds like even Naughty Dog are not immune to hdr issues. Hopefully, more developers will become better at it. Like The Coalition. They know their stuff when it comes to hdr.
Looks good to me on a C9 OLED. What do you think is messed up?

A lot of parts in the game are fine but in certain chapters the black levels look significantly worse than when you switch to SDR. The overall picture looks faded in certain chapters, yet looks amazing in most other games (save for fake HDR like RDR2)
@@GothicFATTY I played The Outskirts yesterday which included Downtown. It looked fine to me but I didn't compare it with the SDR image. When it's dark you just gotta make use of the flash light and everything seems ok.
Also RDR2 at least lifted the 100 nit dynamic range with their patch. I still prefer SDR in that game though, the HDR lacks contrast.
A few small frame drops but still above 50fps in non competitive games is not even an issue
Have you played it online? Non competitive my ass.
It's not a big issue, but I do notice stuttering whenever my game drops under 60fps, even if it stays in the 50s. I'm playing AC Rogue on PC at the moment. Played 1080p maxed out 50-60fps for a while, then tried switching to 900p to try locked 60fps, and it makes a BIG difference, believe it or not.
I guess they released a newer patch than this, because supersampling is back for 1080p users.
Meanwhile, I'm here playing this for the first time on the PS5
1080p and 60fps with high quality shadows, thats exactly what I want from the PS4 Pro, I dont mind the loss of Supersampling.
Do a tech/graphics analysis of The Last of Us Part 2 trailer!
Did you like the last of us part 2?
The roar of the giant clickers is fucking terrifying when they try to rip your head in half.
These videos are ruining gaming. They lowered visuals because of 50 fps from 60 fps? No no no. I game on PC and a drop to 50 is completely ok. Thanks digital foundry for ruining this generation.
Yeah man, screw Digital Foundry for making informative videos, even though the resolution drop is probably an oversight on the devs... I mean why would they omit the supersampling option on 1080p screens when they made the Pro run even better at higher than 1080p resolution.
Are you that freaking ignorant, man? Are you? Or are you trolling? Cause I can't fucking tell...
bmdshred77 you don't play on PC you pony, you wouldn't care about this video if you did.
David Francois in the farthest thing from a pony. I play PC more than anything but I play Xbox more than PS4. It's not about being fanboy. It's about people on consoles banging fist about resolution and 50 fps. Believe me 50 fps is fine as long as it's not frame pacing issue which is a stutter. I'd rather have better visuals and drops to 50 but since DF makes big deal about it now the game is less shiny on the new console. By the way I have 3 Xbox ones in my house because my kids and I love Xbox. I do however love couple games on PS4 and unfortunately Sony fans right now are ruining gaming because of resolution and fps wars.
Marius Urucu I'm not ignorant at all. Digital foundry is just getting idiots on consoles to care about the smallest fps drop. Decks should be more worried about making something new than trying to get game from slightly dropping few frames. They dropped the visuals to do this and 50 fps as a minimum is completely fine. You won't even notice it. PC gamers as myself run games at 60 plus fps all the time but sometimes will drop to sub 60 . Not a big deal.
DF should take the approach of telling the truth. They make it seem like dropping couple frames means game runs poorly. So the idiots buy into it and demand changes. So now you get uglier game on 1080p screens just to save 50 fps.
bmdshred77 You are blaming Digital Foundry for what the ignorant, uninformed and trolls are doing. They are making informative videos, to inform the consumer, not to boycott devs... Blame the fanboys who come here, blame the trolls. DF are doing this for the consumer and no one else.
I can live with drops to 50 FPS myself, no problem. It's not like dropping from 30 to 20, that's waaaay worse.
Also if you watched the whole video, you would notice that it wouldn't make sense to not run TLOU in supersampled mode at 1080p on the Pro, since it clearly can handle higher than 1080p, even in the previous patch. If you can put two and two together, you would come to the conclusion that the guys at ND simply just dun goofed. It happens. Cut them some slack, it's bad enough they have to focus on 2 closed systems now with different performance levels all while offering settings to please everyone. They probably didn't want it to happen, but it was an oversight...
Seriously man, how the heck did you come to this stupid conclusion?
I wonder if the next patch will just downsample from 1440p in 1080p mode, that sounds like a good compromise to keep all the bells and whistles while maintaining a locked 60fps.
This is so disappointing, the whole point of pro is to supersample on 1080p displays if you don't have a 4k display. All this over a 52-55fps drops?
You mean 5-8 fps drops :P.
Also the point of the pro is not to supersample but to give a better experience. Looking at the previous 5-8 fps drops there are also issues with frametiming and that leads to stuttering and controls not feeling quite right for some people. While that would be more of a minority the problem is still there and it can take people out of the experience (also just because you don't notice it doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed so that those it does affect can also enjoy the game).
In short, the pro is not seeing its potential as a high end console because the developers are still wrapping their heads around the whole idea of options (even though they have been available on PC for some time) and even when that happens, how long until the underpowered CPU starts to rear its ugly head in when games start to struggle to reach 30fps again.
Ularg blame digital foundry for this
Yeah, looks like the PS4 Pro is pretty crappy... It's pretty embarrassing really. This is a fuckin' PS3 game.
Matías Pierdoménico its running at 4k,ps3 was sub 720p..thats a huge leap
checarlos956214 ps3 version was native 1280x720.
I really preferred this game at 30fps as intended. Feels weird at 60.
So now its 4k 60fps good job sony
Good job devs, not sony.
HellFire all of them
Don't see how that's impressive considering how old the game is.
Did you even listen to what they said, now its 1080p 60fps instead of 1800p and 60fps.
Its a downgrade.
Alex Handro it is. for $400 console
If they fixed the frame rate issues at 1800p, why do they need to revert to 1080p when on a standard HD display?
Cant wait for the Last of us 2 solid 60 fps in PS5.
Ivan Jaramillo it's gonna be on PS4 the ps5 won't even be announced until at least 7-8 years in the future
John Gough 7-8 years... facepalm.
Ivan Jaramillo he's right
lol, "solid" 60 fps? It's gonna have a lot of drops. And the PS4 release will struggle to run in 25-30 FPS.
That is the console way.
John Gough 7-8 years in what future?!
PS4 launched in 2013. Now 3 years later they released the Pro as an upgrade to prepare them for PS5. PS5 will launch around 2020
If you have have 1080p screen, then your choice is
1080p 30fps high quality shadow
or 1080p 60fps high quality shadow !!
Is there a reason to lock it to 30fps in with the new patch ?!
biggest hype TLOU II announced
Started a new play through in 4K and it's absolutely beautiful with great performance.
There's no pleasing some people, just play the game and stop analyzing it.
Tbh, aliasing doesn't bother me at all at 1080p with a good Post-AA, so I'm actually very happy that ND opted for 1080p locked at 60fps with max visuals.
who plays games and looks at the shadows constantly? lol "look, enemies rushing towards me, let me get my shotgun out....oh wait, lets look at shadows"
Is DF just the PS4 Pro channel now?
It's just a 399$ machine!!!! For the price that's superior
I wish more devs would have similar priorities. Maybe then console would be a real alternative for me.
most pointless console ever
yep, PS5 would be better instead
1080p 60FPS all day everyday
If only this game ran on pc..
jimmy perkins Keep dreaming. This masterpiece will never be on PC.
So in 60 FPS mode they axed pixel count by *TWO THIRDS* to get ~5% better performance in stress areas, and in 30fps mode they dropped the resolution by an insane 75% to get zero visual or performance improvements...WHAT THE FUCK NAUGHTY DOG?!
Logan S. probably to push for the user to get a 4K screen
Gonna review patch 1.09?
Hey nice Video! I have a ps4 pro and a 4k hdr tv. I play on Resolution mode. Is boost mode in this case recommendable? Or what is the best in my case?
such an achievement for Sony, they're now able to run a 2013 last gen game on 1080p/60.
man they come so far
Mustafa Sam This came out 2 years ago you dumbass. It was 1080p 60fps then
AngryEsper94 I know that you fucking dumb ass I own a the game on ps4
and it doesn't run on a locked 60 and also the graphical fidelity decrease when you unlock the frame rate
don't be a fanboy just because you own a system
Great job DF but I must say I'm even more pissed that ND removed super-sampling from 1080p TVs! I makes no sense whatsoever!
