Hey! This is a fan project I created based on Subnautica by Unknown Worlds. The Seamoth was a complete recreation, including the models and texturing. The reaper model was taken from the game files in an effort to not overwork myself but I will likely make a model of it myself in the future. Subnautica has always been one of my most loved games, and I've followed it all the way from the original Early Access until now. Can't wait to see where they go from here on out.
This project (including the seamoth modeling) began around a month ago with relatively constant effort, making it the longest running project I've ever committed to! This will be a huge milestone for me in my 3D career and I'm proud of how it turned out, I would consider it a huge upgrade over my previous project. More animations will hopefully be coming soon, which will return the focus to product advertisement (unless inspiration takes me by surprise).
Really appreciate anyone who watches and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have!

Not true. It is *very* good, but not that far.
@@myatnykrolik7593 SILENCE MCDONALD’S LOGO!!! You are ten months too late
I'm sorry, master@@TheFishManEatsBread
@@myatnykrolik7593 The council has decided your fate. All is forgiven
For the part of description of the reaper in the game, it says, "The Reaper Leviathan uses its loud roar as a sonar, so if you hear it, it already sees you." Which makes this video more terrifying than it already is.
Precisely!
But wouldn't the sound have to travel back to the reaper for it to echolocate you. So you hear the roar ever so slightly before it sees you.
@@jonlivesley While it is true, the point is still the same, if you hear it run, cause its coming to you now. With about 21 in the game sprinkled over the map, according to the wiki, that's still a terrifying thing to think about.
@@jonlivesley the speed of sound is faster in water than in air so it makes even less of a difference
I love how you made the bone sharks move like actual calm sharks! ❤
i mean yea, they really arent that dangerous
@@joshuacampbell3d Of course, that's why it's cool
@@AG-ng1ml Well, sure, when you have armored vehicles and diving suits, and magical first aid kits and repair tools. Closer to reality, those things are deadly. They're literally the size of a great white shark.
@@danieldickson8591 Yeah? And? They are indeed large too, but they don't cause that many problems. More people are attacked by cows every year :)
Its crazy how i rarely hear the reaper's roar, yet it is so burned into my brain
I vividly remember quitting the game multiple times while getting engine scans behind the aurora, it’s definitely burned into mine too

There are many unique and impressive creature sounds in Subnautica. But more than any other, the Reaper's roar sounds like it wants to kill and eat you.
@@danieldickson8591bc it does

Thanks for depicting the exact scenario that i fear every time i drop my Sea Moth into the water.
Buying Subnautica was the best and worst decision I’ve ever made
Terrifyingly awful, but that makes it so fun!
"Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?"
After all these years, hearing that still gives me chills.
Same here!
It invariably results in a "Nooooope" as I turn around.
@@jerikagoddess I never went to the dunes in my first playthrough
That Reaper Leviathan attack was like no other we've ever seen in Subnautica, but I have a feeling that it's way more realistic than what we have in-game right now. This is probably in my top 5 for best Subnautica animations I've ever seen (granted, there aren't a lot of Subnautica animations with this sort of quality, but this is still so impressive). Overall, you did such a great job on this! I agree, with Anthomnia, bravo!
I think the in game version of the attack is a lot more realistic. This version simply swipes at incredibly impossible high speeds like a sword fish. The Reapers main attribute is it's mandibles and high dense muscle of it's body, made exactly to grab and trash around like it does in game, which is much more realistic to how an animal would use it's characteristics, especially with such adaptations. If you watch enough playthroughs of Subnautica you will see some pretty crazy attacks from it. Not saying this version is terrible or impossible or ridiculous, it's a cool fun and different way to experience and look at this creature and how it scares people that it just feels like it's just that dangerous. I am simply enjoying that, but not calling it realistic.
@@raionshishi8290 its good to see other perspectives, personally i see the reaper as more of a stalker type hunter so this felt more fitting and "scary" for me
thanks so much!
@@joshuacampbell3d That's totally fair to say, I can see that point of view just as well. My intention was simply looking at it from a scientific and realistic biological factor, all in all it's still good and cool and still realistic. Ambush hunters and stalkers tend to go for 1 hit K.O attacks.
@@raionshishi8290 I’ll definitely take that into consideration for anything I do with reapers in the future, although the ghost leviathan is the one I’d prefer to do next, definitely not the stalker type
You should be very proud of this mate, it’s very well made. You really got across the sheer size and power of a Reaper, it can be forgotten that the average size is 55 meters, at least triple the size of a Megalodon.
appreciate that! thanks so much
I disagree, since subnautica's camera lacks the refraction found in actual water.
Water is so dense that light refracts heavily enough to make underwater objects look significantly larger than they really are, but since subnautica cant do that, the devs instead enlarged the creatures and map to compensate. If you look at freecam sizes of handheld fish like peepers, they are roughly larger than the player's head, but in your hand they are much smaller. Same with creatures in submarine animations looking much smaller than they are. It's basically confirmed by the reaper skull in below zero, which is smaller than the freecams of the original by a decent margin. Id say the reaper is only around 20-30 yards, small enough to squeeze itself into a cyclops through the window.
@@SS-rf1ri that’s really interesting, thanks for the input!
@@SS-rf1riThat’s a perspective issue, like you’ve said freecam gives a more accurate comparison, I’ve done it next to a Reaper’s head and it can easily swallow the player whole. In-game PDA also confirms scanned specimen is 55 meters. It’s canon, sorry. 🤷🏼♂️
Read the PDA entry. Also, its unique is the game because it can GRAB YOUR SEAMOTH@@SS-rf1ri.
A subnotica movie would go so hard
wish i had the time...
Maybe mr president can make a movie about it.. (markiplier)
"Detected multiple leviathan life forms in the region. Are you sure, whatever you're doing is worth it?" is the scariest thing you can hear in the middle of the night while exploring the depths of 4546B, and how you gave off that vibe is crazy good
That’s what I was going for, thank you so much!! ❤️
That's so cool!
Love how you paid attention to the size of Bonesharks, nice detail that puts things back into perspective ❤
I really love the voice line the pda plays when you enter the dunes for the first time "detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region, are you sure whatever you're doing is worth it?" Its instantly sends the message of you shouldn't be here, just little things like that that really add to the horror of subnautica. Its definitely one of my favorite voice lines in the game
Mine too! I think the first game hit a good balance of fear and just fun exploration, but it would be really cool to see them lean into the horror aspect even more in future installments.
I know some people say they just need a heated blade, stasis rifle, prawn suit or propulsion cannon to not be the hunted.
But just think for a minute, bare minimum defense and next to zero offense against ANY large aggressive fauna. You’re just like a worm being dangled on a fish hook for these things, all they need is one good strike.
Exactly, terrifying
That’s how it felt when I first tried to fight one floating in the ocean looking in the abyss till something stared back
The sheer power and ferocity of a true apex predator is not to be overstated or underestimated. The Reaper collects its due, should it spot one not of its territory. The only true defense is to not be where it is.
Wonderful animation my guy.
i just gotta love how the seamoth is on autopilot and acts on it's own, but in all seriousness, incredibly amazing work!!
Yes that was really cool. An AI seamoth.
any part 2 in the future will absolutely contain a pilot i promise
im about to start working on my own subnautica animation and think you did an amazing job and completely understand not adding a human in there, the thought of rigging and animating it sounds like a nightmare but also kinda fun IMO.
Edit: Ironically I was gonna name it "PREDATOR" but now I feel like that would be cheap, only time will tell.@@joshuacampbell3d
Seeing the seamoth lose control and spinning wildly after the attack put some real panic in me. Great work!
Thank you!!
Incredible work, Josh! You should be very proud of this :)
Thanks!
That was fucking amazing. I was blown away. It actually made me want Subnautica to be made into a movie/ few episodes. But like how you did it. The AI talking in the background giving off story would be great and amazing. This was just awesome. I watched it in a completely black room. Dude I just can’t express how good this was to me.
Thank you! Dark room would be spooky 👀
I've never seen something that would be a literal PERFECT depiction of if you were in the characters place in subnautica, experiencing it in real life, the roar of the reaper followed by an instant horrifying appearance from the darkness, and ending with a brutal attack. I truly believe if the reaper leviathan was real, this is the best depiction of how it would attack. This is absolutely phenomenal and I can't believe youtube only just recommended this to me
Jesus even just the seamoths investigation of its surroundings, the sonar, this is so awesome dude holy shit

@@patrikmatousek5450 aye aye! Hopefully in the future!
Im not sure if im overreading this, but i still wish to comment this. As i genuinely think, this is one of the best short films I've seen a fan make.
I feel like this is a really good representation of a new player in subnautica. The second you get your first vehicle (in this case, the Seamoth), it feels like you're unstoppable, whether or not you know what awaits you or not. It allows you to distance yourself mentally from any threat, as you have a literal shell protecting you from any potential danger. However, when a new player hears the roar of a leviathan, they pause to check their surroundings. More often than not, they're unable to see the leviathan until it's too late. At least in my case, I froze up and didn't think to run, which caused my first death.
In my opinion, this short film really captures that feeling you had when you first encounter a leviathan. The film is gorgeous to look at, and the dread you feel just before the repear attacks the seamoth is genuinely great. It shows just how much smaller and out of your element you really are. This is extremely underrated, and know you did a fastastic job.
I really appreciate your take on this! It’s cool to see how this impacts/resonates with different people. Yes, the goal was to capture the experience of a confused/foolish person in a strange environment. Seems a little silly to stare into the distance after hearing a roar like that.
Now that I think about it, it seems awfully similar to the official cinematics and lifepod logs, with the operators doing things that appear stupid to a veteran Subnautica player. Definitely not intentional, but I’m happy that people are noticing connections similar to that
Thank you for your comment! ❤️
this is wild. absolutely amazing!!
Thank you so much!!

This is still way more than I ever expected! It only had about 1,000 for the first year basically. All this was the last 4 months or so. Thank you so much though!!
I recently started playing this game and didn't realize giant monster attack you at first. This is the most horrifying game I've ever played 10\10.
@@DrWondertainment821 well, going behind the Aurora is the safest spot on the map, I highly recommend it **cough**

Wtf... This is amazing! Good job! I kinda wanna see a full Subnautica movie now...

The visuals were amazing, goddamn!
Tysm!!!
Ya this is exactly my experience with Reapers...

Thank you!! ❤️
Y'know, I've been a huge fan of Subnautica for a long time -- I replay it all the time, and I watch other people play it a lot. Usually, I look forward to someone else's encounter with a Reaper, since it's a video game and it's part of the fun.
This is the first time I've seen a Seamoth attacked by one and been hit with the dreadful thought of "there's a PERSON in there." Even though, upon further inspection, there's no pilot, it still carries that feeling. The fear that comes with the realization that you are so, SO fragile.
Absolutely well done, this is gorgeous and the storyboarding / camera work here is PHENOMENAL.
Thank you so much!! I do have some regret about not putting a pilot in there, but I have to remind myself that that was over a year ago and I probably would not have been able to pull it off.
I appreciate your take on this, I’m glad it resonated with you! ❤️❤️
If you can hear it, it can _see_ you.

The flip side of this animation is it starts of the kinda the same only the lighting is darker and you don’t see it in the safe places then you hear the reaper, you see it attack and that when the change hits.
You see the reaper go for the sub and the sub suddenly vanishes from view as teeth bite down on the reaper the water goes cloudy as something eats the reaper ... then the camera pans out as the sub comes back into view only this time you can clearly see the cockpit and it’s empty apart from a glowing ball of yellow light and as it pans out more you see the light is attacked to a tentacle attached to the head of a even larger creature that’s using the sub to lure in pray human and none human alike.
I was thinking to have it on the tongue like a snapping turtle but the angler fish is way more unsettling for most people especially with it milky white eyes, I also like the idea of the life of the planet adapting to what humans have added to it and an anglerfish that’s smart enough to use a sub as bait is really dangerous as what else could it come up with given time.
