As a working gunsmith for 25+ years, I have a fondness for the 38 super. I owned a original Colt lightweight Commander in the super, and fell in love. I have an RIA chrome Super now, and I love it! Really likes Winchester 38 Super Silvertip hollowpoints, the best defense round I have fiund, a muzzle velocity of 1250 fps, with an aluminum jacketed 125 grain bullet. Chip McCormack makes 10 round magazings that run around $35. Mec-Gar Co. Makes a nickle and blued mags also high quality, with the blued mags around $18, and their nickle ones about $22. Have fun with your new baby! By the way, Ajax grips makes faux ivory and pearlite grips for $35, checkered or smooth. The ivory goes beautifully with the high gloss nickle.
You did a pretty good job explaining a cartridge with a confusing history. The .38 ACP was introduced in 1902, and predates both the 9mm Parabellum, and the .45 ACP by roughly three years. Colt introduced it in the Browning designed Model 1902 Auto Pistol. If I remember correctly it was the first US pistol cartridge that was designed exclusively as a smokeless powder cartridge, and it's power level was similar to a .38 Special. In the late 20's, the need for more powerful, better penetrating handgun loads led to the development of two "new" cartridges built on existing cartridges. The .38 Super was simply a higher power, high velocity .38 ACP with a warning on the box not to use it in .38 ACP marked guns. The .38 Super guns were all 1911's and the use of .38 Supers in a 1902 usually ended up in a broken gun. The .38 Special received the same treatment with the .38/44. These were the first examples of the "+P" concept.
Graham Baates a colt 1911 in .38 super is a fine weapon. it did not come out in 1900though. .38super. came out in1925 it was very popular until 1935 when a New caliber was introduced , .357 Magnus by S & W
The problem is that because it's not a military round there's less production of the ammo which makes it pricier, and because it's a rimmed cartridge it makes it harder to make guns for and which makes the ammo have less demand.
amazing caliber!! my grandfather carried this gun in Mexican military service fir more than 20yrs and would prefer this round over .45 caliber anyday!! my dad and i have learned to love this Round and from my honest opnion it is far greater than a 45. and as u stated lighter, faster more round capacity and powerful!! and now it is becoming very very popular among the 1911s fans. and selling very very well in the states!! but awesome purches i hear alot of great things about RIA.
My father was Sinaloa state police in the 80’s and 38 super was his service round as well. The amount of stories he has using that gun is insane. Times were so different then.
I have the 38 Super Rock Island but in the GI finish, I have 2 RIA and very happy with the performance and reliability. The Super 38 is a nice shooting round.
I’m on my second Colt in .38 Super. I love the round, and Colts. Also, it’s interesting that you took it apart that way. I always pull the plunger out before getting the slide off so I don’t send the spring flying.
One thing I can never criticize about the 1911 is the safety...it's (for me at least) about as perfect as it's going to be location and function wise. I like CZ 75s overall better than 1911s but the CZ safety is farther forward than I would like on the gun, and not as easy for me to flick off as the 1911's.
I bought this same model around 4 years ago and it’s still holding strong. As it stands I am looking for my second nickel plated 38 super just to have a shooter and a case queen.
Rock island has really provem that they can make very nice, and affordable, 1911s. I LOVE .38 super too, my next purchase for sure is a 1911 in .38 sup
What are your impressions of the pistol three years after you recorded this review? I have a Dan Wesson Guardian chambered in .38 Super that I have in my rotation of EDC's. Great pistol!
I have one just like this, got it for 4 years already, I have put 500 rounds thru it with no issues, love the gun, the only thing is that is hard to find the ammo.
I love this gun; but I don't want the older version with the huge, Rock Island Armory logo on the slide. Does anyone know what serial numbers to look for; to make sure I order the one with the new, small logo, like this one has? It's not available locally; and I have to order online. A lot of these online dealers have disclaimers about the accuracy of their photo depictions.
My very first 1911 that I got. Boy was I surprised about the quality of how SMOOTH the slide was, and still is. God what great functional sexy pistol. Upgrade the grips though...
E65 Ninja Hello there friend. Bought one yesterday, my first 1911 as well, you say get better magazines? The one that came with mine seems to be faulty, it's hard to strip ammo from it by hand, and my first box of 50 rounds I had one failure to feed. Which magazines do you reccomend? I would appreciate any advice, I know so very little about this beautiful gun.
@@jasonperdue2554 I bought some Mec-Gar mags but I would recommend the Wilson Combat magazines. The Mec-Gar mags I got work fine just other people have had problems with them. Wilson Combat mags work as well but are twice the price. Mec-Gar being around $20 and Wilson at around $40 a mag. Cheaperthandirt.com and Midwayusa.com are the two places I purchased. Always glad to help someone out!!!! Good luck...

I have a ria 1911 compact 45 and am buying another. Shoots as well as my colt m1991a1 compact. I really wish RIA would make a commander SIZED 1911 super. If they did I would buy 4. One for me and one each for my son and his wife and my oldest grandson. Love 38 super.
also even with all the handguns I've fired, techniques, military experience and ect....I feel like a noob now cause you just taught me forward checking...never used forward slide grips/notches before
Just remember the only right way to do something is the way that works for you. There are dozens of techniques and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Don't let someone tell you that their way is better unless you try it and it works better for you.
38 super is one of the best 1911 this caliber is almost the same with 357 mag I used wen I was in my country for me is in excellent gun and caliber I have one 38 super commander ligth weight but I prefer full size and all metal
Mags are best bought online. Wilson Combat and Metal form make good mags. As for ammo, it's best to load your own cartridges. If you can't find or make any, just change the barrel to 9mm and you are set. 38 Super Mags work well for both cartridges.
I bought one in 2014. Can't get it to feed at all. I thought it was the Armscor ammo or the mags. Bought a couple of McCormick mags and a box of Sig ammo. Still hanging up every 2 or 3 rounds. No obvious cause. Anyone had similar problems?
You are correct mexicans love .38 supers “superonas” “la super” etc my grand pa had them my uncles and father had them now even a lot of corridos old and new talk about them
Very good cartridge, and of course the 1911 is a classic. It was developed in response to demand from police agencies who wanted a cartridge that could reliably penetrate the auto bodies and glass of escaping criminals' vehicles. The cars of the day were pretty much bullet proof to the handguns the police were using at the time, most of whom had revolvers chambered in .32 or .38 S&W or early loadings of the .38 Special. Colt just "uploaded" it's older .38 ACP cases and warned people not to use the .38 Super loads in the older guns. This worked OK in an age with few liability attorneys. And when people actually paid attention to warning labels. S&W was working on high velocity loadings of the .38 Special to be used in N frame revolvers which came to be called the ".38-44" , these were the .38 Special +P loads of the day, just not called that. Eventually, in 1935, the .357 Magnum was introduced. There was a loading of the .38 Super using an FMJ bullet they called "metal piercing" designed specifically to penetrate auto bodies. Of course, more modern ammo in most handgun cartridges penetrates the lighter modern auto bodies without any trouble, so that reason for the .38 Super evaporated. Yes, it was a popular civilian round in Mexico, though Mexico now bans any possession of handguns by civilians except in .22 caliber (since about 1971) . Mexican customers loved nickle plated guns and a nickle plated 1911 is kind of synonymous with the .38 Super. There are other countries with the "military cartridge ban" and .38 Super has been popular in those also. The cartridge also allows competition shooters to achieve "major power factor" ratings in certain competitions, while still having less recoil than .45 ACP. Though that particular competition is no longer so popular. A lot of people love the cartridge and it is a legitimate companion to the 1911, though all of mine are in .45 ACP. It is certainly as capable as the 9mm and even better.
Back in the day, law enforcement liked the 38super because it would penetrate windshields, car doors, engine blocks and some body armor. Coincidentally, criminiminals liked it because it would penetrate windshields, car doors, engine blocks and some body armor. It's starting to get popular again. Twould be nice if you could find ammunition at a reasonable price.
Ive never heard of it before. I have the option to buy a Llama Max 1 38 super today. suggestions on that? advice and should I? its $501.20 is that a reasonable price?
Llama builds excellent guns. They are actually made by Metro Arms. Beautiful guns! $500 is a good price and for the money I don't think anyone offers a better gun than Llama. We have a video on their Max-1 in .45 coming out soon.
The thing about the .38 Super is to hand load for it. Most factory ammo is loaded on par with 9mm because few people are actually chronograph checking their ammo, so they assume the .38 Super is a lot more powerful than the 9mm, when this isn't always the case. Companies like Underwood sell genuine .38 Super ammo, but firing it from a stock .38 Super can result in parts damage - ask me how I know. The long, skinny ejector on my RIA GI .38 Super was tweaked out of alignment on about shot number 5 of Underwood 125 grain ammo pushing out 550 lb-ft of energy. Compare that to garden variety Armscor .38 Super that recorded the exact same velocity as some Winchester white box 9mm, both fired from my .38 Super...yes, you can indeed fire 9mm from a Super chamber all day, everyday. The Super load was 125 grains compared to the 9mm 115 grain, so resultant energy of the Super was a bit higher, but neither load was exactly rip-snorting as they say. So, after I trimmed off the deformed, extended ejector which is only extended to compensate for WEAK factory ammo, I decided to make my .38 Super was it was meant to be - the 9x23 Winchester! To that end I machined out the frame to accept a ramped barrel, and proceeded to bump up the slide return spring, an EGW flat-bottom firing pin stop, and a Wilson Bushing comp since the .38 Super - like the 9mm has the gas coming out the muzzle to make a slide-mounted comp work. I also ordered up a batch of 9x23 brass and sized it all through my 9mm/.38 Super dies and proceeded to load up some almost 600 lb-ft loads using 124 grain TC-FMJ. Now THAT is the load the .38 Super was meant to shoot! The 9x23 is easily on par with the .357 Magnum in the 125-147 grain weight range. The alternative of course is to order up some Underwood ammo if you live in a State where you can receive ammo at your home. I'm not leaning toward picking up the nickel plated RIA .38 Super, not to use as a Super, but fitted with a RIA .22 TCM barrel, capable of shooting either .22 TCM, .22 TCM9R, or my proprietary 5.56x24 which is purpose designed to function through a 9mm length pistol action.
1911 guns the only ones i like and trust is the colt had a rock island keep jamming had to sold it save money and bought the real thing colt 38 super and bought a 1978 government 70 45 more money but is true what they said you get what you paid for it
.38 super is illegal in mexico it always has the banditos liked them for the same reason dilinger and other criminals of the time liked it it was fast and would go thru car bodies and crude body armor of the time.
Jerru Lopez No it's not. In Mexico you can legally own up to 38 special in a revolver and .38 super in a semiautomatic handgun. 9mm and above in semiautos are reserved for the military and police forces. Don't spread incorrect bs.
I looked this up myself a few months ago... what I read was that it's been illegal for like 40 years, but there's enough in circulation that it doesn't really make a difference.
Ah la .38 ocho super the Preferred of Chalino and the Cartels. This is a very legendary gun and the .38 super is a hotter round then your 9mm. Going to get me one of these. Got too
Nice gun. 38 super is illegal in Mexico. Allowed top calibers for civilians are 380 ACP and. 38 special. . 38 super is popular between bad guys and civilians how have it illegally.

After 4 years I’m back watching this video and I still have my rock island 38 super
Love that nickle finish! The current trend is to make guns look as ugly as possible with a matte SS finish.
why black mags tho..
I think since it was pre-owned it came with that clip but the original matches the gun
Never heard of .38 super
38 super way deadlier than 45 acp, both same design, but different caliber,i prefer the 38 super
How much i buy
Not for sale
Mexicans love this gun because it’s the highest legal caliber allowed in Mexico 🇲🇽 super 38
I wish
But it isn't legal in Mexico
The maximum caliber legal is 380acp on semiautomatic handgun and 38special on revolver.

.38 super is illegal in mexico it always has the banditos liked them for the same reason dilinger and other criminals of the time liked it it was fast and would go thru car bodies and crude body armor of the time.
Jerru Lopez No it's not. In Mexico you can legally own up to 38 special in a revolver and .38 super in a semiautomatic handgun. 9mm and above in semiautos are reserved for the military and police forces. Don't spread incorrect bs.
Daniel Estrella easy dude I got my info wrong long time since I been down there thanks for the correction man
I looked this up myself a few months ago... what I read was that it's been illegal for like 40 years, but there's enough in circulation that it doesn't really make a difference.
dkroll92 if you’re in a hunting club in Mexico you can own one legally.
In Mexico 38 super is also banned. The highest caliber you can legally owned is 380 ACP.
That sucks. I always thought 38 super was legal just not millitary cartridges!?! 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️😒
Ah la .38 ocho super the Preferred of Chalino and the Cartels. This is a very legendary gun and the .38 super is a hotter round then your 9mm. Going to get me one of these. Got too
The magazine should of came crome thats not the original
Not legal in Mexico only 38 special
Nice gun. 38 super is illegal in Mexico. Allowed top calibers for civilians are 380 ACP and. 38 special. . 38 super is popular between bad guys and civilians how have it illegally.
Poor pistol the guy doesn’t know to disassemble it correctly! Smh 🤦♂️ he’s doing it as if he’s disassembling a Glock
Did the gun come apart?
