Nominating John Williams for doing a remix score for Indiana Jones but not Joe Hisashi for Boy and the heron is fucking criminal🤬
Even Daniel Pemberton for Spider-Verse would've been great too. Hopefully one day animation will come back into the limelight
Because he's retiring in a few years and doesn't have a lot of time left on there clock living wise so it's their last chance to get one in. Why not just give him a special Lifetime Achievement Oscar? I do not know.
@@ChaseDobsonCrazy how much he's been slept on for that tbh. Spider verse was particularly special on that it Pemberton's top tier score AND an amazing soundtrack from metro. Snubbed for sure
I think Oppenheimer should be a shoe-in though, and Can You Hear the Music is one of the most special pieces I've ever heard.
Everybody knows Oppenheimer's going to win so it is meaningless to fight about who's got nominated and who's not 🙂
@@nirajmahale5765 nominations matter too though, that's an achievement in and of itself so there are movies who aim/hope for a nominations who never expected to win it
May December got the same number of nominations as the cheetos biopic
i dont think any statistic hurts more to think about
Cheetos getting more than Iron Claw is close
The Cheetos biopic being a biopic of something that didn’t happen proves that we’re in a simulation
Flamin’ Hot and Suicide Squad have more nominations than any Park Chan-wook movie.
That movie kinda suck to be honest and it was a painfully boring watch. Haynes can do way better
Leo DiCaprio has the same number of Oscar’s as Suicide Squad
I find it kinda insane that Asteroid City didn’t get any kind of design/wardrobe nomination…I get that people complain that his stuff is style over substance but can we at least acknowledge that the style is amazing? Maybe people are too used to that being the case with Anderson at this point
I know this is a toxic perspective but Wes Anderson's style, to ME, is getting stifling. It's just so overt and samey now that it feels like a slightly pretentious Caricature of itself. Grant Budapest Hotel is one of my favourites, and without that (again, probably unfair) feeling of 'im sick of this style', Asteroid City is another great film of his. Maybe the academy are also sort of bored of it?
At least he still got nominated for one of his Netflix Roald Dahl shorts, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which he'll most likely win.
@@luketaylor1305I think Wes Anderson and Tyler the Creator exist in the same bubble somewhat, obviously they are both talented but the way people use their styles and aesthetics as gimmicks and their whole personality it sort of loses what they originally created and makes it boring, like that stupid Wes Anderson trend on Tiktok just made his whole filmmaking style look cheesy, now eveytime I watch his films I get bored because online everyone is trying to imitate same with Tyler with everybody thinking they can start a group like odd future
@@ayodeledavid3034 honestly a great point - that Wes Andersen trend really ruined his style for me too, and I like the Tyler comparison alot
iron claw deserved better 😪
at least best original song IMO
@@peterc.potswald6292it would be better if Zac Efron got best actor nom :/
@@drewhughes9127 it was way too competitive this year for him to have a chance, unfortunately
@@penelopephelange yeah and also due to the fact the movie released RIGHT before award season.
Especially for acting
the academy was simply too scared of the sheer power that would be emanated from the name "Zac Efron" on a list of academy award nominees
The lack of Charles Melton and Zac Efron nominations brings me physical pain.
I kinda expected Zac to not get nominated because it's been lacking but man Charles is just so painful
America Ferrara winning is impossible but then again, Jaime Lee Curtis won last year for playing the "IRS lady"
Jamie Lee Curtis won because she’s Jamie Lee Curtis, she’s Hollywood royalty. That’s it.
i feel like Jamie Lee Curtis’ win was simply a career recognition award, i personally think Stephanie Hsu or Kerry Condon should’ve won that
I agree. I would have picked Kerry Condon@@daRealB-Rex
She did a fantastic job, worthy of the nomination for sure, but Stephanie hsu’s performance even in the same movie was more impactful, not to mention the other films supporting actresses like Kerry condon. I think like someone else said here it’s more of a legacy award for Jamie Lee Curtis, which she deserves, but I wish legacy was a separate category, because unfortunately the other nominees deserved to win
@@tristanfroment33 It is a different award, its called an honorary achievement Oscar
No spiderverse in the best original score is a tragedy and shows how little the Oscar’s respect animation
Edit: the boy and the heron probably should’ve gotten one too, at the least over Indiana jones
Yeah that was a genuine shocker.
Music is not amination though?
Have you seen all of the nominated movies?
@@songsfordustmitesIt's a movie... with a soundtrack. It can absolutely be nominated for soundtrack.
@@songsfordustmites LMAO bruh. He meant the animation movie Spiderverse has the best original sound track in it. Not that Spiderverse the movie is a soundtrack. Hes also saying that the Oscars doesn't give enough respect to Animation movies, implying that the soundtrack in Spiderverse was overlooked
The boy and the hero and across the spiderverse getting no nominations in score is stupid
animation is for kids and only has a right to exist in two categories we can make fun of yearly and give to disney half the time regardless of quality /s
animation is a medium not genre. you gotta be special needs lol @@gaufkyeself
I would be offended on the behalf of Joe Hisaishi but i dont think he gives a shit
@@gaufkyeselfSome animated films have better storytelling than some other movies these days
Indiana jones getting a score nom but not either of those films is NUTS. I love John Williams, but come on.
America Ferrera getting nominated was a travesty in my opinion. Especially over Julianne Moore. Was also REALLY hoping for Joe Hisaishi to get into original score, but knew it was unlikely. But overall I’m fairly happy with everything. Oppenheimer is gonna be the winner
Nomination wise, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon and Anatomy of a Fall seem to be the only true contenders for Best Picture (because of their Director & Editing nominations) But yeah, I also think that Oppenheimer will win
It’s really bizarre that America Ferrera got nominated but Margot didn’t. Makes no sense especially given her scene is literally a lecture/infodump, it’s such a bad scene.
Yup. I liked Ugly Betty back in the day, but her performance in Barbie wasn't that great. Greta and Margot not being nominated was ridiculous.@@bencarlson4300
America Ferrera was my favorite Barbie performance
@@tristanpflughoft8911 you must've done these nominations!!
It's TOTALLY gonna be an Oppenheimer party. Sucks Iron Claw didn't get a damn thing.
I thought Iron Claw participated in next years Oscars
@@lorenzo_smitI hope cuz I’d say it’s best picture worthy
it is sad that the academy feels they can only nominate one female director, and that we put Justine and Greta against the other. Justine's direction is superb and honestly probably my personal pick of them all, but Greta did deserve a spot too. and also no Todd 😭
Why? Barbie was a fun time but I don't think the directing was particularly outstanding enough to be nominated. There's no injustice happening there.
Celine Song deserved some recognition for Past Lives in my opinion
That film looked stunning
@@M_k-zi3tn fair enough that’s your opinion! I just mentioned this because karst even himself when mentioning Justine’s nom almost automatically and subconsciously compared it to Greta’s lack there of. And I was saying that I think that that is sad that it is such a cemented expectation that there can only be one woman director nominee.
THIS. We need to stop comparing women directors to one another and Greta did a great job with Barbie, I feel like that movie could have been really awful if it was given to someone else. I’m also surprised there weren’t any nominations for Priscilla, I don’t think Coppola should have been nominated for best director but maybe for costume & cinematography.
i love greta, but i would’ve wanted celine song over her tho
I wish someone loved me as much as the academy loves John Willaims.
John Williams deserves his love (Would have replaced him with Boy and Heron this time though)
I hardly ever have a strong feeling for make up/ hair (or costume too but Barbie for that) but I want it for Priscilla, I never for once doubted Priscilla's age and it led me to believe that Cailee Spaeny was like 19 when she's 25. Obviously, not as flashy as Poor Things or Barbie or whatever they both deserve it too. Not even sure if it was eligible to be nominated since it's nowhere else.
I def expected priscilla to show up somewhere
@@millystars based on what? The only real nomination it got was the critics choice awards.
I knew that Charles Melton would get snubbed, but it still hurt to see him not get a nomination.
Same with Dominic Sessa and Zac Efron. They all gave outstanding performances, but I guess the Academy is really biased against younger actors now.
Zac Efron not being nominated is a bummer. He really brought it both physically and emotionally. His dedication should not go unnoticed
Killers not getting in adapted screenplay is absurd
I loved Barbie, but KOTFM was way more deserving of screenplay, sorry, I’d say even more than American fiction and Oppenheimer as well, although I VERY much enjoyed zone of interest and poor things’s screenplays
Margot Robbie not getting a nomination just boggles my mind. And no Best Director nomination for Greta Gerwig?! Yet America Ferrera somehow got nominated for what was only just a fine but not great performance in a one dimensional role. So disappointing.
have u even seen the rest of them
Everyone knows America ferrera is nominated for that one monologue not the role as a whole
Their performances are completely overshadowed by the competition so that makes sense
It’s a crime not to nominate both Greta Gerwin and Margo Robbie for Barbie. These snubs always hurt women more than men. The creativity of Barbie was wild and fun and spectacular. And these women made that possible. It dampens my enthusiasm for Oscar’s when they get it so obviously wrong.
ryan gosling also. if youre gonna nominate an acting perf in barbie it had to be margot robbie.
It’s weird to me how there are 10 best picture noms and they keep the rest of the categories to 5. feel like they could bump it to 7 with a minimum votes needed and avoid so many snubs, especially in a year like this.
Andrew Scott got snubbed so hard
No he didn't. Who would he replace out of the current nominations?
Everyone
@@jelcoleys8087colman domingo bro no one saw that oscar bait ahh movie and he got the nom just bc he’s of color
@@jelcoleys8087 Bradley Cooper obviously
Crazy that the academy still can’t imagine putting more than one woman for the directing category
Maybe more women should direct the top tier movies? Ya'll get your diversity picks in almost every major category yearly now in case there's no suitable great option. Unlike Triet's Anatomy of a Fall. Well deserved, and not a diversity pick.
Don't get me wrong, Greta deserved a nom for best director, but so did others who didn't make it. All the directors who got noms deserved it for their skill shown in their films. Get used to it.
And before you cry bigot; I think Glandstone deserves best actress and Randolph for supporting actress. It just so happens the best of the noms for these categories were pocs this time. And sometimes they won't be. That's how life works. Grow up.
Also according to google about 10-22% of top 250 grossing films are directed by women. There are 5 directorial slots. That means, yes on average women should make up 1 or 2 of those slots. But how many years are there where out of the 5 or so best directed films, 2 of those are women? They're often more inexperienced in the medium (as they have been left out for so long), and are starting to gain respect and ability to produce the projects they want to.
@@gaufkyeselfhe mad as hell 💀
Crazy that people are still brushing this off as sexism. Have you seen the other movies? I loved Barbie, but I wouldn't put Gerwig in over any of the nominees.
@@gaufkyeself Maybe more women SHOULD direct top tier movies; crazy how three women directed top tier movies this year and only one got a director nom. There really aren't diversity picks anymore; the competence of non-white non-male artists is pretty much evident at this point.
Greta directed Barbie better than Yorgos directed Poor Things and I prefer Poor Things to Barbie. Better cast, better flow, better performances and blocking.
Responding to someone pointing out sexism in the director's branch by telling them to grow up is kind of immature.
30% of this year's Best Picture movies were directed by women. 2 slots, one wide open for Greta or even Celine. For both to miss is notable.
@@jelcoleys8087 I was actually talking about Celine Song but yes there were a lot of great movies this year and?? Im still right lol the academy can’t seem to put more than one woman in the directing category… I’m stating a fact
20 days in Mauripol was soul crushing. Definitely deserves the best doc win.
All of us Strangers was one of the the most heartbreaking films I have ever seen. with a truly terrific performance by both Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. No nominations is insane, I realize it has a limited release but c’mon.
Yes that is probably the biggest snub of the year
*You should watch Nimona.*
Great film!
Say it louder boy!
he really should
fun fact: when justine triet won the palme d'or for anatomy of a fall, she did her speech criticizing the government's repression of protests against reforms in the past year + the treatment of artists in france and the little financing they get from the government. the authorities didn't like this, the prime minister publicly said she didn't want to watch the movie because of that speech. anatomy of a fall was not chosen to represent france despite being a box office and critical success (coincidence?) but now it was nominated for five oscars, and prestigious ones at that :)
I'm really rooting for Holdovers for most of its nominations. I was shocked by how good it was.
I know it's not gonna win but I'm still rooting for it hard
@@blanket4763 I at least want to see it win for acting with Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Paul Giamatti.
i was really rooting for dominic sessa. though it’s his first ever movie, his performance was the best part of the movie for me. i’m so excited to see his career blossom.
@@spinlok3943 The Holdovers was such a surprisingly lovely movie. I think Randolph the best chance of winning something for that movie, I believe Giamatti will probably lose to Cillian Murphy.
@@DerMoerpler I wouldn't be mad if Cillian wins. But I'm personally rooting for Giamatti.
Not a single nomination for The Iron Claw, damn…
Oppenheimer didn’t get nominated for visual effects because it actually didn’t get on the shortlist! There’s a big controversy with them not crediting the artists in the credits and instead just saying a studio name
it didnt use any vfx right? Wasnt that like a big selling point, like no cgi explosion shot
@@liquidfluid6935 vfx is not limited to cgi but also includes "in-camera" special effects on stage. So there is plenty of vfx in Oppenheimer.
@@liquidfluid6935 Also every production has invisible VFX, like erasing things that the director wants
@jayshukla6096 yes but it hardly matters, in terms of vfx its literally just an explosion filmed in a pretty way, the movie is three hours long, I don't see how one gimmick practical effect that Mr beast does just for fun counts as Oscar worthy
So happy Robot Dreams secured that fifth nomination for Animated Feature. It was one of my favorites from Cannes, and I’m glad it’ll be getting more attention now.
But holy shit, Once Upon a Studio getting snubbed for Animated Short must feel like a stab in the back for Disney. Besides Poor Things, they really struck out this year.
Robot Dreams, the sequel to Robots (2005)? 👀
i think once upon a studio is elligible for the emmys since it was aired on abc
@@Arawn505THE BETTER ROBOTS
Really happy for Society of the Snow making it in there, that movie was great
Spiderverse losing out on visual effects and a literal remix of John Williams score being nominated just makes me sad

I liked Barbie well enough but being nominated for best picture is nuts
Shut up, it deserves nomination.. it's not 'NUTS'.. 😊

@@theaizere This msgs can be bland to a girl living in first world country like you, but for many women this movie is VERY SPECIAL..
Watching a half awake Karsten go crazy to the nominations is always the best
Iron Claw and May December 😢
The fact that everyone I have seen react to the awards be happy and picking Godzilla in VFX makes me super happy. As a godzilla fan who was told that the films were stupid and not 'art' for years and to finally have a film be respected by both the film community and general audiences is awesome.
I wasn't even a huge Godzilla fan prior and Minus One is my favorite movie of 2023
The fact that Disney isn’t nominated for Best Animated Feature makes me so happy!
Elemental is a Disney-Pixar film.
The fact TMNT Mutant Mayhem got no nominations pisses me off
Elemental is Pixar but still counts. At least they didn't absolutely destroy the negative cred they have by noming f-kin wish
my first thought upon seeing that may december got almost entirely snubbed was "oh man karsten is gonna be so disappointed"
i've seen oppenheimer 3 times now, and it still flows so smoothly. I'm a super nerd in science stuff so it might be just the giddy energy but it still is so well done. it would for sure be a "perfect" movie by taratino standards
Oppenheimer is an unadulterated convoluted mess. It's not oscar worthy and is merely a mediocre documentary with some good actors.
it flows way too smothly, it's like a perfect homage with music all the time where nothing goes wrong, all shiny polished, nobody properly clashing with anyone, just weird hollywood arguments
Lmao nothing goes wrong?! Nobody clashes together?! Watch the movie again. This isn’t even a credible take.
karsten's reaction to the entire best director category is the funniest thing I've seen today
I don't understand why more people aren't talking about how Leo wasn't nominated for Killers Of The Flower Moon. One of the most amazing performances of the year in my opinion. It feels like everyone wanted Leo to get his Oscar and then they gave it to him, and now the Academy went back to go going "yeah it's Leo, whatever"
Because Leo was the least impressive out of the 3 leads
@@gleewhoseline198 Emily Blunt was the least impressive of the three nominated in Oppenheimer, and yet there she is. Also, I disagree because I'd put Leo just as good as DeNiro, plus DeNiro was supporting
Idk what happened with the politics (because that’s ultimately the deciding factor), but personally I hated DiCaprio’s performance because I saw zero nuance in what should have been an extremely complex character. He just felt evil and stupid and that was all I saw in Ernest from beginning to end. Lily Gladstone and De Niro carried that movie for me.
I thought he’s acting was great towards the end of the film but for the most part it wasn’t too impressive, there were alot of performances from last year I enjoyed more.
It's Murphys to lose anyway.
Hey fam! Just sending my condolences:
RIP SALTBURN, TMNT, AIR, BEYOND UTOPIA, MONSTER, JOHN WICK 4, ALL OF US STRANGERS, ORIGIN AND THE IRON CLAW.
🙏🏾
Love John Wick 4, I'm sorry it's too stupid to be nominated for much. It's a really corny and fun action movie but it stops at that.
and the killer
Rest in peace Andrew Scott, I was really rooting for him.
@rebekahp4083 I'm seeing the movie tonight!
Thinking about TMNT today :(
Nice little nominations still on the screen in your vid ^^
Idk why I watch these, I don’t know these movies, but I’m glad Karsten makes funny faces and is sometimes happy.
I will say I was gobsmacked at the fact Greta did not get a directing nod for Barbie now THAT suprised me. But Margot as Barbie I wasn’t shocked because I just knew there were better performances by a female in 2023 than Barbie. But as a whole I’m happy to see Barbie get all the nominations it got. After walking out the theatre I had feeling Ryan and America would get best supporting nods. But I was sorta sad that Rosumand Pike didn’t get a nomination for Saltburn she was soooo good in every scene she was in.
Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant stole the movie for me, they were both so fantastic in small roles.
Great video! I haven’t seen the reveal show yet. So, it was great to be able to watch it with your commentary!
The boy and the heron and ATSV not being nominated in score feels like a travesty. And America Ferrara being nominated for supporting actress doesn't sit right with me.
People are mad over Ryan getting nominated over
Margot, none of them deserved that nomination.
Charles Melton should have been nominated
Nah, Ryan carried that movie hard.
he did, but an oscar worthy performance?, def not @@randomguy6679

im glad tunisia made it into the oscars with four daughters you should definitely check it out
My Oscar Predicts:
Best Actor: Cillian Murphy or Colman Domingo
Best Actress: Emma Stone or Lily Gladstone
Best Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Best Editing: Oppenheimer
Best Costume Design: Barbie
Best Picture: Poor Things
Yesss agree so much!
Fallen Leaves not getting International feature nomination was crazy
It wasn’t submitted I don’t think
Also, selling the rights to Mubi is not exactly the best idea for awards buzz. The reality of nominations is that a lot of it has to with campaigning and encouraging basic interest among academy voters (a lot of them being older working professionals who aren't as extensively plugged into the scene and often have to have new things coming out directly broadcast/marketed to them. Big reason May December got so little was because Netflix put all of their campaign money into Maestro. Mubi, a niche platform a good majority of Academy voters likely don't have, is not going to have the money to launch an awards campaign for a movie they can only watch on a service they don't care to get.
Okay agreed, NOW how do we get the voters to actually watch ALL of the nominees?!????
el Conde for cinematograohy would be wild
Wow.. what a solid year for film/movies.so many good stories and actors/actresses. So hard to decide on many of the categories!
Oppenheimer was excellent. As a history professor I really enjoyed it. Much better than Napoleon! I made historical reviews of both if anyone wants to check them out.
My first time actually giving a shit about the Oscar noms. Not used to this level of audacity. I’M FIRED UP GRETA LEE DESERVES JUSTICE
the creator isnt a great movie but god damn the visual effects in that movie are insane considering the budget
I liked the movie. I loved its look
@@ellisrussell1994Oh god I hope so man

Is there a particular reason behind Oscars hatred towards Makoto Shinkai’s works ??
This is the 3rd time he gets snubbed out of nomination, Your Name, Weathering with You and now Suzume….
He doesn't make his films with Ghibli. That's it.
The Academy doesn't nominate any Anime film that is not a Ghibli film.
What Was I Made For isnt a basic pick... it's the correct pick by a fairly wide margin imo. I think it's Billie's best song ever, far and way.
bro quick with it
as soon as i heard about the charles melton snub i thought of you. prayers.
There are several constants to every Oscar nomination group:
1. The obligatory Diane Warren slot for Best Song
2. The Academy likes to shower their darlings (John Williams for example)
3. The documentary group *never* nominates the popular ones (Remember the Mister Roger's and Jane Goodall snubs?)
4. At least one Japanese and indie animated film for Animated Feature.
Japanese animated films only get nominated if they are a Studio Ghibli film.
Outside of that they always get snubbed. Great Anime films like Your Name, A Silent Voice, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, The Girl Who Lept through Time, Wolf Children, Maquia and I want to eat your Pancreas didn't get nominated.
Even this Year Suzume while bieng a better film than Elemental didn't get nominated because it wasn't a Ghibli film.
Asteroid City snubbing hurts
have you watched society of the snow and what did you think of it?
Asteroid City should be in there for cinematography and directing. Hell, even sound design and set design.
tbh i’m livid that barbie didn’t get a hair nom as someone who works professionally in hair, bc the sheer amount of labor the hair department put into just margot’s wigs blows every other nom out of the water. i genuinely mean this when i say that it had some of the most impressive hair design i’ve seen in years.
yes ! & I’m sure you’ve seen the videos explaining how they had to get the right shades w the sets & everything, SOOO many wigs ! I couldn’t stop staring at them.
It wasn’t on the Oscar shortlist. The Academy prefers makeup and protestics instead of hairstyling.
@@laurajones1773 true ! I had hoped it would fit into the H&MU category, maybe it’ll get best production design !
Really happy and surprised to see El Conde nominated for cinematography, it was shot beautifully.

"20 days in Mariupol" is must watch Karsten!!!
Did you know the Oscar’s
I've heard of them
Yea it’s that thing
Yeah but
Where would Zone of Interest be in your top favs 2023??? (It’s my #2)
The transition from "Society of the Snow" to a food sponsor is out of pocket lmao
Karsten do you plan on making a video about the curse?

Are gonna get a zone of interest video because I would love to hear your thoughts
The Zone of Interest lets go!
The “oh brother”s killed me😭
Bro your takes are outrageous I can’t finish this video
Can anybody explain to me who the oscars are even for? People that care about films always just seem upset at the picks being incredibly off, and people who don't care about movies don't really watch the oscars, and if they do they only care about viral moments that have nothing to do with movies. I just roll my eyes at anyone getting their hopes up for a win or routing for their favorite thing because it literally doesn't matter if we can all agree the academy is inconsistent and usually gets it wrong. Someone who watches annually: help me understand, or are you all just watching this to pass time.
I don't watch the Oscar noms. I just watch Karsten reacting to them 'cause it's WAY more fun.
I can’t believe asteroid city didn’t get anything especially on the cinematography, production design front.
When Annette Bening stared coldly into Jodie Foster’s eyes and whispered, “You just got Nyaded,” my breath was taken away. Definitely the scene that secured her an Oscar nomination.
Oppenheimer got snubbed for VFX because of the "No CGI" chants. The people in those fields vote for the nominees, so they gave Oppenheimer the same energy.
I want to ask everyone’s opinion here, do you feel like Box Office hits or Movie Internet Phenomenon (BarbieHeimer) should influence whether a film should be nominated because personally I feel like Oppenheimer and barbier having nominations was mostly due to its popularity cause sure they were great films but I feel like there were underrated films that deserve better but because they weren’t as popular they got swept under the carpet
Yo Karsten where'd you get that floor lamp
Does anyone know what original song from asteroid city karsten was talking about?
Unreal how May December and Flamin Hot have the same amount of nominations
I hope the Boy and the Heron gets it but I don't know if they'll do it because I think the Academy knows that Miyazaki won't show up again
11:28 indeed, it feels like 5 hours man
Low key the colors on 2024 in the thumbnail low key made me think this was a jacksfilms video for a moment. Still gonna watch this cause it’s fun
I feel like iron claw is being undersold for these, I mean I was sobbing. Sure a lot of the other catorgies for iron claw played it safe but the acting was incredible far better than what cooper was doing.
My pick for best actress is also Lily, I’m PRAYING she wins buttttt just given how the other award shows are going I think Emma Stone is gonna get it. Lily wasn’t even nominated at BAFTA, which is not a good sign
