All the katas have diferent dificulties. For example, Gankaku is one that shows balance, Suparinpei is one that shows timing, sense of direction and explosivity, Seiyenchin shows stamina, and so on... So no, katas don't have the same value. Thats why there is preference in some katas to do in the finals, like Unsu, gojushiho sho, Chatanyara Kushanku, Suparimpei, Kururunfa etc. Hope i was helpfull, and by the way, i am european judge.
Continue training Kohai and, when doing so, maintain the correct mindset at all times. Osu Kohai. You, too, will reach this level. If they were capable of reaching such and elite level so can you. Be Faithful in Your Study!!!!

I am sure that the main demonstrator would knock your nose of your face in real combat before you knew what hit you. Karate Do is a Martial Art with many doors.

I Don't like this kind of "sport karate", i always followed "traditional" schools BUT of course i have to admit that they are great athletes and their skills are at the top !
@doktormozg sorry, i just wanted to say that they were perfectly timed, just like france, so from my own experience as a kata team member i know, that when in that situation - both perfect, the difficulty of the kata will be considered as a judging matter. about the judges ... well, there are many things judges look at and the difficulty is one of them. :) most of all it's just politics, even in karate :/
but if both teams are really good and perform both katas with quality, than judges decide on the difficulty. a 'perfectly executed heian shodan vs a perfectly executed unsu/gankaku/gojushiho sho .. you name it' who would you choose then? ;)
