The 2-alarm fire that ravaged the Racquet Club of Irvine on Sunday evening began as a routine OCFA response to Culver neighbors' reports of smoke in their vicinity. Firefighters quickly discovered heavy smoke coming from a two-story commercial building in the Racquet Club complex, near the UCI campus in Irvine.
The fire presented immediate challenges, according to OCFA PIO Fire Captain Greg Barta, who said that the location of the building - over 200 feet away from street access - required firefighters to extend a vast network of firehoses over that considerable distance initially.
Firefighters can be seen positioning themselves in heavy smoke along the roof, soon engaged in fighting the ensuing blaze which quickly broke through. More assistance was summoned, enveloping the otherwise quiet sleepy neighborhood night in cascades of brilliant emergency lights and shrill sirens as dozens of emergency vehicles congregated. Firefighters in their reflective gear lit up the complex like fireflies swarming the scene.
Fire investigators continue working to determine the cause of the blaze. No injuries were initially reported at the scene.

I appreciate all the emergency responders so much more after watching your videos! Like here, with the mention that all these brave firefighters FIRST had to pull all the firehoses way back to the fire, far from the hydrants on the street. There's so much complexity in what these public servants do for us, in dangerous circumstances. Selfless. And thanks to LA-OC for bringing us the facts!
