I'm only just now getting into using a tufting gun, but I've been making latch hook rugs, punch rugs, locker hooking rugs, braid rugs, etc., for over 40 years. About half of my rugs, I hand-basted a non-slip backing on; the rest of them I coated the back with several thin layers of diluted Elmer's Glue-All. I then add one more layer and spread a nice duck cloth or canvas or even sometimes cotton (old sheets!) over the entire back. Works fabulous, lasts seemingly forever, and isn't stiff (although never as flexible as rubber type glues) if you dilute it with water (about 25% water to 75% glue) and coat several thin layers, letting dry overnight each. I've never had it break down like some people say it will - I have rugs backed with Elmer's that are over 30 years old that are still going great. Due to chemical sensitivities/allergies, I simply cannot use carpet glues like Roberts. (That's actually a large reason why I got into hand-making rugs oh so many years ago - the "new" smell of commercial/store bought carpets literally lands me in the emergency room and/or having to use an expensive Epi-Pen). My rugs have been made with acrylic yarn, cotton yarn, wool yarn, wool blend yarns, wool fabric strips, cotton fabric strips, t-shirt "yarn", etc.; I clean them all the same way.
Anyways, back to cleaning my rugs, which I clean using one of two methods. For my really dirty rugs: First, I hang my rugs over the railing on my deck. I then grab my garden hose and spray them with water until the water runs clean. For really dirty rugs, I'll spray first with water till its quite wet, then I take a cheap spray bottle and fill it with some water and a few squirts of dishwashing soap (I use Dawn most often). I generously spray that all over the rug, then I use a cheap plastic bristle scrub brush (like you would use to clean a bath tub) and scrub all over the rug, using not too hard but not too soft pressure. I then spray with the garden hose again until the water runs clear. I then let the rug dry flat *upside down first*, for a few hours, then I hang it up and let it dry overnight. A quick vacuum and good to go!
For rugs that are just moderately or lightly dirty, I fill up my sink or bath tub with water and a generous scoop of Oxy-Clean powder and a few squirts of Woolite liquid soap, and I just swish the rug back and forth, agitating it with my hands, until it seems like it's cleaned enough. I then drain and fill my sink or tub with fresh water and rinse the rug well, again agitating with my hands. Sometimes I need to rinse twice. Let dry for a while over the edge of the tub, then lay it upside down to dry for a few more hours, then hang to finish drying over night.
I don't know if either of these methods would work with your rugs since you use a thick felt backing (I'm totally going to try using that backing you use on my next rug!) but these methods have worked for me for literal decades on my rugs.

I would recommend finishing up with a pass of clear water, no detergent. The detergent can end up being sticky and attract dirt this will help remove the detergent residue. .

I don’t know if you’ve covered this question before, but do you have any tips or explanations for why there’s pieces of white tufting fabric threads that poke throughout my designs? There aren’t any rips happening and the yarn stays in place (I use a cut pile gun), but it took me hours to cut away these tiny pieces of white thread from my tufting fabric out of the face of my design. Thank you and I love your videos!

I feel like someone who purchased a rug (and isn't making hands tufted rugs themselves) is not going to go through the steps of shearing the rug in their care and cleaning process. Also a rug would only last you a couple years if you trim it every time you clean and care for it. I guess I just feel like durability is a major issue and I don't know what the answer is to that..... I'm wondering if some kind of stain/upholstery protection like Scotchgard would help with ease of cleaning stains. Something to think about. Thanks for the video!
I agree, which is why I recommend using rug wool for rugs! The acrylic just falls apart after a while, but shearing is not needed for wool.

Next time you should look into flood cleaning, using garden hose, not sure how it will affect the glue and backing you used, but there are plenty of videos of this process used on the most delicate Very expensive rugs.
