Why? It's wrong and bad. You don't install drain pipe correctly, they are also designed to drain somewhere, not take gutter flow and just fill up.
I guess one needs a thick skin to post on CZcams
@@kcChicken123 no you cant just put a video on here saying this is how its done without making damn sure its how its really done. You gotta expect people to tell you when your wrong on CZcams. All this does is make other people who own a home or who are looking to do it on their own and find this video that shows them the wrong way to do it. If you put a how to video on CZcams it has to be correct.

How not to do drainage 101
Excatly them holes will be clogged in 6 months and that's only the first issue. Then they put it on CZcams like an expert 🤣
@@ItaBspicy is that not what the sleeve is for? Serious question
@@thatchedstudios4768 it will biodegrade likely

Yep & then post it?😅
So the whole point of a down spout is to get the water away from the foundation not to help it put by burying it a foot down....
U missed the tutorial about he was also making a moat around the foundation wall. Next week he will add koi for a little color and living water way.
And ???
😂
Wrong wrong wrong. Consult with someone who knows what they’re doing folks.
Agreed. I commented the same lines. Not right at all
Agree, glue a good start, open graded rock also a good idea. Let’s stop there
@@matttaylor8390 holes go down
Yeah it's awful
Fabric is needed for sure wrong pipe as well
The confidence of CZcamsrs who have no idea what they’re doing is always funny to me.
Don’t use T connections. Easy for leaf clogging. Use a Y pipe connection in the direction of the water flow. I discovered this issue when digging up a drain pipe that was clogged with a T.
A Y or a comb, in this case it would be comb
A cleanout at the Y is also essential from a maintenance pov
Do-it-yourself videos like this one is what keeps the professionals employed!🤣
Yes sir i just hate when i hear that i saw a video on you tube coment. Well if your the pro now i can leave lol

Would you have your drainage ditch done like that? Not a hater, just like things done right.
I made one like this, and it's been ten years and still flows fine, just like they day we made it. Just have to do it right, make sure it's draining downhill.
@@toastrecon lucky you
The pipe that has holes in it is used to COLLECT water and move it way. If you want to move water from a source, you need to use a solid pipe and drain it to a sewer line or a weeping bed.
Wrong. This particular pipe is to allow water to exit a system. Opposed to drain tile who's purpose is to collect. Either way, this is a failed application lol
As a general contractor for 35 years, the 2 holes point down equally so it forms a 1/4” channel for runoff. It also lets the water from the trench into the drain pipe to be carried off, this guy was placing the holes randomly. Ideally their should be two pipes in the trench, one to carry the downspout water and another to drain the trench.
At least 2-3 times a month I replace this type of system. Do not do this. Silt and mud get in on top of roots.
my man called the pipe a hose.. then said he’s not gluing it in case he wants to take it back apart, like wtf?
You dont glue this style pipe anyways.
@@BadBadgerTrollAccount172 you do if you want them to hold water and not fill the basement. The holes in the pipe are for water getting in, the water isnt supposed to get back out through the joints.
@@wolfrig2000 😂 You don't glue schedule 30 pipe. Its not a pressure system leakage at the coupler would be minimal to none. That's a drainage pipe, the holes are to let water flow in and out evenly throughout the trench they're placed. This video doesn't install the pipe to work as designed.
😂😂😂😂
@@BadBadgerTrollAccount172 same reason field fittings are not glued in a septic system. At least in my county.
How not to build. He plans to fill up the pipes with water and then overflow them into the soil. Never d this. They need to drain to daylight and not into the soil.
Different soils have different saturation maximums so this reinforces your point of not “draining to soil”
You guys are both wrong , the holes in the pipe go down to the soil. If the soil can't handle the drainage the stone goes under the pipe like in a leaching field. Proper drainage does not flow up hill. Silly boys
@@jefflinnell8492 💯 holes downward fill from the bottom not the top. If so you’ll end up with ~4 inches of water that will need to leech into your lawn causing a slew of problems
@@vfloyedjr the water is supposed to leach out through the ground , which means holes down. If you get a big rain do you want to have a fountain in the rocks. Your filling the entire pipe with the holes pointing up so every time it rains that pipe is already full and now your pushing water up next to the surface every time it rains. Solid pipe for transporting water away weeping holes in pipe for water to weep into the soil below.makes sense?
@@vfloyedjr that pipe should not be the pipe with the holes , they are tying the downspouts into the main drain line , not catching water from the patio
He’s installing it with plans already to “remove and replace” ‘cause he knows it’s wrong. One of those “looks good from my house” jobs
I laughed really hard when he said “properly drained system” 😂
Take drainage cues from elsewhere.
So much wrong. All drain holes face down. But more important down spouts are always tight lined (no holes) if you want to collect water from the ground you need to dig a proper ditch 24” deep 8” wide then line it with filter fabric and put 4” of drain rock down then the perforated pipe holes down then 8” drain rock on top and cover with filter fabric. Slope pipe 1/4” per foot.
The idea is you are just creating an empty space for the water to gather and flow. With the holes facing up the water you want to collect has to rise up4” then fall down. You reduce your water by having it rise up into the pipe and flow away.
Ahhh a fellow storm water management professional 🫡
Totally agree
That makes perfect sense..

And never connect surface to subsurface drains.
Whoever sold you the perforated pipe is a master salesman.
Lol, I'm a retired landscaper. As you've been told, holes go down. Lots of diy'ers screw this up.
Holes go up!
Job security. When it goes awry and he's the only one that knows how it works....
I always put my drainage behind the wall not under it creates a void
The holes on The pipe need to face down
Just what I was going to say lol
Nope, the holes need to be on the sides. This allows the water to run to the end, and then as it fills the pipe and backs up, it starts to flow out the holes.
@@BillyR1968 No. The holes already come drilled off center on the pipe, so the water flows down the lower sides. The holes are drilled during manufacturing. I know because I just installed a drain system.
@Tex Teacher I hope this finds you and yours blessed.
I only know what i know.... I've installed a few over the years as a plumber, and then just recently, as the maintenance manager on a 20k acre ranch. (I put a few in here over the last ten years.) I'll be bummed to find out I've been doing it wrong all these years. :)
What i was taught as a plumber's apprentice back in 1988.
Idea : to get water away from the house (especially the foundation), preventing foundation issues......
Letting the water out of the holes up close to the house wouldn't be good, so a few sticks of solid pipe first, and then you turn those holes any way you'd like. Humbly, I'll stick with my first comment. Holes on the sides. 💛
@billyb584 WRONG the holes are drilled at 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock. 12 o’clock is designed to face directly down to the ground and the idea is that the ground water flows into the holes and down the pipe.
The concrete slab oughta be doing real good after of the washout that's going to occur underneath it.. .
Use biger size rock so water can flow easier
This is by far the funniest video ive seen i do waterproofing and any pipe like that i see comes right out filled with dirt
Never send captured water into a perforated pipe
Unless it's a septic tank system
I’ve never tried using soil to seal a pipe before, great advise.
I know absolutely *nothing* about drainage systems ...but, even I know you don't successfully collect water in a closed pipe and send it into a pipe with holes.
If you elect not to glue your storm pipe, I recommend that you install one self tapping screw at each connection, helping to prevent disconnection from overtime settlement. I believe this to be the best option for residential storm drains. I do speak from experience, as I am a 40 year pipe fitter. I'm one of many that makes sure that your shit runs down hill.
Yup, I have used galv stitching screws in the past with success for temp connections
In Houston do not pass inspection like that..get craks Due weather conditions.
Perforated pipe for downspout runoff?
Should use wash gravel/river gravel. Limestone gravel brake down.
You need cloth under the pipe, otherwise you are just filling them with mud when it rains.
Exactly
French drain holes go down to allow proper amount of moisture into soil around concrete, whatever the soil can't absorb is carried away by the drainage!
"I'm not using glue to make it easier to take apart later"...as a plumber, I'd like to follow you around town! 😂🤡
This is why typical homeowners pay handsomely to have a properly installed system that will work properly and stand the test of time. Good video of WHAT NOT TO DO
Make sure those holes go down not up otherwise wnt work correctly
There is a space of about 3" to 4" of length, along the circumference of the pipe between the two rows of holes. The centerline between the two rows of holes goes down.
The holes DO NOT go up toward the sky.
The perforations should face the earth dufous. Otherwise the dirt falls in the holes and clogs the system.
Has nothing to do with “dirt falls in holes” 🤦♂️. We place holes at bottom otherwise French drain is non-functional until water table reaches elevation of holes.
We also NEVER drain surface water, ie downspout drains into French drain perforated pipe. That’s a major failure, we parallel solid drain and perforated pipe if sharing trench then combine the 2 using a Y at end of French drain to discharge point
That's pretty solid "hose"
That finish looks clean 👌🏼
The usual suspects
" cousin contractor " never fails to show. we real contractors got the blame.
I just love homeboy plumbing 😂😂
Always use a closed drain system. Over 40 years experience
I'm not sure why some of the holes replace vertically and others horizontally can you please enlighten me thank you
Down spout drains and wall drains should NEVER be connected to one another. As others have said holes go down, easiest way to put them where they belong is to just make sure the writing on the pipe is at the very top, manufacturers do this intentionally as an easy way for installers to line everything up. Drain pipes go to one side of a wall or the other NEVER underneath as they crush over time allowing the wall to shift. Any and all drains need to be daylighted or ran to a sufficiently sized dry well or drainage field for the expected water flow and soil conditions. Also fabric goes between soil and gravel not just around the pipe otherwise the gravel can/will silt in over time clogging up everything. Plain and simple please do more research before putting something like this out in the world where other DIYers can see it and think they're doing things right only to create problems for themselves down the road costing time and money. Wall does look nice though.
I came here for the comments. Not disappointed.
As you don't know ,as well as many others . in 1985 when I first bought this pipe for a similar project those holes ,which there are only 2 runs of ,need to be placed at 10 nd 2 o'clock.
Or as I have always done 8 nd 4 o'clock position. it still works never had to fix it . going on 40 years.
I do agree to friction mate them as well. we would put dish soap on it nd slide em all the way in.
Not bad but your installing the holes in the wrong orientation they must go at the bottom
It should be taped joints to prevent roots and drain holes should face down
You can’t put all of the water from gutters behind a retaining wall and disperse it through perforated pipe.
You need perforated pipe behind the wall to collect ground water and get it moving from behind the wall so it doesn’t create back pressure.
But I only saw a couple of stones really. Not a retaining wall.
Holes go down.
AFTER DIGGING THE TRENCH PLACE A FILTER CLOTH IN THE BOTTOM OF THE TRENCH THEN INSTALL THE FRENCH DRAIN IN A FILTER SOCK PROPERLY INSTALL WHICH MEANS HOLES FACING DOWN TO SIPHON OFF THE WATER AND NOT HAVING 4" OF WATER SITTING IN THE TRENCH.
What? 1) the holes in the perforated pipe need to be facing down. 2) the slope of the pipe has to be 1/4” per linear foot. 3) the lowest part of the pipe has to be the drain…somewhere away from the structure, and 4) the filter fabric should encase the stone and the pipe.
Please don't do this!
Remove your video asap!
It's totally wrong information
You're creating a giant dry well inviting the water.
Risk vs reward ratio 50/50 on this. Saves the top, swamp the bottom. Good build though!
The nice thing about sleeves is that they create job security. The fines in the soil clog up the sleeve, making the system non-functional. You can't snake it clean, because the fines are on the outside. But you can return to the job and dig it up and re-install it and charge your customer again . . .
Drain right under the wall learned what not to do wash out your base amazing
simply amazing the things people will watch
Should have used larger, washed rock in the bed. Fines like that will become sediment and clog up the pipe.
That's horrible buddy. That will cause a lot of problems shortly.
Appreciated ideal work! Pay them ideally ❤!
It’s always a worry when every bit of equipment they use is brand-new with the labels stuck on the shovels Wawa
If you want more water to drain, use piping with no holes. If you want a french drain, holes go on the bottom.
The holes in the drain tile has 2 sets of holes plus stampet writing on the pipe. The writing from the factory on the 10' section goes up where it is installed. That puts a set of holes on the side and bottom. Anytime you say the word downspout in a sentence for drainage, the pipe needs to be solid.
30 years of home building and I have never said "One Unique Caveat...."
Now do a 'Retaining-wall Drainage Set-up in hard Australian clay.
First off you need to use a san tee or a sweep. 2nd you need to encase your rock in to cloth to prevent dirt from filling up the voids in the rock. This prevents soil from filling up the area for water. Third the holes are faced down as you do not want to float you pipe. Forth you need to move the water away from the building. Far away from the building. You should have an open system in which the down spouts drain into a catch basin.
How much would you like your footings to move?
Him: Yes.
The water is supposed to enter the pipe through the holes and be carried away. The sleeve prevents soil from entering the pipe and plugging it up. I hope you made it all slope correctly or it won't work.
I think he's talking about downspout from your rain gutter from the house roof.
On the bright side. At least the person after him who shows up to do the job right will be able to use the unglued pipe to create proper distance and grade to the new drainage system. His statement almost leaves you wondering if he is actually aware of this already.
The PIPES with holes need to be placed with holes facing downwards. So water collects from rising water from the bottom. Water gets held in by the roof of the pipe and directed away.
I understand the desire to pick up sheet flow from the patio, but putting a drain up against and below a slab is asking for problems. If the lightweight sleeve on the pipe fails, the drain tile will be transporting soil and water. I like the woven fabric for under the system because woven resists water movement, though it isn’t clear that is how it was installed. A strip drain under the decorative stone may have been a better option. Additionally, carrying the gutter runoff away from the slab before managing it would be my first choice.
The retaining wall needs to be installed on compacted “road mix”. The use of fabric is a nice upgrade.
Non woven fabric is the best choice for wrapping French drains. French drains are an underutilized option for sub irrigation of mixed planting beds (those including shrubs and trees).
Nice esthetics and material selection.
Does anyone have a minimum number between drain tiles and slabs?
Sleeves get clogged and won’t let water drain through into the pipe, especially if you have clay soil regions. Did two projects and both ended up being a failure. Thousands of dollars down the drain
Job done correctly 👍👍
This is definitely how you do not install a drain French drains get dug down deeper and you always put the pipe holes down never put the pipe holes up
Never put down spouts into perforated. You have it captured, keep it in pipe until its gone far away from any foundation Also dirty stuff from roof will clog holes from inside.
You want those whole on bottom bud and not sitting on dirt but drain rock bc they’ll just pack themselves full and clog etc. filter fabric down first, pipe then rock and wrap then cover with desired materials 😊🤘🏼
The proper way to do this is with two pipes. One, with no holes for the downspouts and the other, with slots not holes, for the other. If there isnt a standing water issue, forget the 2nd one.
The holes go down, and down spout drain do better if separated from a footer type drain. I’m sure it will work, just not how I would do it.
Downspout drains should be solid pipe in order to get the water away from the foundation. This dude is building a french drain which collects unwanted water, like from behind a retaining wall. The holes should be facing down.
I love these sorts of videos for all the bed side experts in the comments.
I’m not a landscaper and the first thing I noticed was the holes being wrong. Plus from my little plumbing experience I’d say no to the t
A professional will be ripping all that crap up in 5 years
Youre going to regret this after 1 or 2 winters. Once those pipes get clogged and your entire yard is now a pond. Had a neighbor do exactly this, an i and others warned him. He didnt listen, an sure as hell 2 years later his yard was under water. Couple thousand to fix it to.
The holes should not be vertical… they should be offset 60 degrees from 180 degrees. So your set of holes should be facing at a downward angle.
Along with all the other mistakes; no crushed gravel. Use 1.5 to 2 inch washed rock
You don't run your downspouts into perforated pipe. You don't put retaining walls on top of pipe. Not deep enough. Just don't do this, it will sink the slab, over time.
That’s why they have perforated pipe. That system is gonna clog up when a good rain comes in.
Yall are so wrong. This guy is clearly an expert since he has a CZcams video.
And with just a little thought you know, never glue your hose, and putting a sleeve on it helps it work better over time.
draining water next to slab?
You created a leach field, but it should not be up against the slab. 😊
You need gravel below the pipe as well or the mud will clog up the holes.
Those French drain pipes are in upside down. Holes go facing downward on a bed of gravel, so it won’t clog as fast. Other than that…nice job, I guess
From a certified hardscape installer please don’t do what he’s doing lol
Yes the perforated hole should be facing down so the water that fills up can and it won't have to fill all the way up over to the holes .......HOLES DOWN BOYS HOLES DOWN
Oh my!! That is really... I'll stop ... I have nothing good to say.
Would tile pipe work the same? Curious
All the water is going to sit under that concrete slab. If it’s in cold climate it will freeze and cause cracking and lifting. Should have sent it 20-30ft away from house.
The holes are supposed to be facing down 🫣
The holes are supposed to be facing down, this way the water will drain properly
Downspout drain should be in separate pipe without holes
