I was 8 years old when Bob got sober… Only took 8 more years to become an problem drinker and another 5 to end up in rehab… 17 months sober - drank - got married had 2 boys - absolutely white knuckled the next few decades on and off.. 8 years once - 5 years twice, with months in between dry as well… I didn’t truly admit to myself I was an alcoholic because I hadn’t lost anything… 🤦🏻‍♂️ until one day sitting in my parent’s basement at 50 years old it hit me… when my wife said “are you sure you don’t want to try” I said nope…. So she left…. Hence, the house was already in need of a new roof 10 years prior… Remember I said I hadn’t lost anything.. hmmm… if I hadn’t spent money frivolously for 3 decades, most likely I could’ve put a new roof over my family’s heads… 4 months prior to my wife leaving, we lost our son in a car accident….. The wife and my son had left and my 23 year old was gone… and after a year of not drinking…. doing it my way…. Sometime shortly after the funeral services were finished I decided that alcohol would be the solution… Once again… I truly fooled myself…..
As I sat thinking… It hit me.. I lost everything…. Everything except my job…. That’s when I realized my way doesn’t work…. I can’t work the program of Alcoholics Anonymous alone…. I reached out for help at work… Not for alcohol, but for my finances… I spoke to a woman from the employee assistance program for about 2 minutes before she interrupted me.. She recommended counseling with a psychologist, and I for some reason agreed…
My first appointment was 10/15/20 .. Due to Covid the session was on zoom… I remember drinking a few before my session. I also decided to be honest…. We discussed my situation, my wife, the loss of my son, and I told her the truth about my drinking… I did lie and told her I ingested nothing before our session though. lol. Anyway, She told me she isn’t my mother, but if I wanted to work with her I would have to agree to some terms…. She recommended that I go to at least 3 AA meetings that week… My stomach sank… I knew it was truly the issue but I took her recommendation… I haven’t had to need to pick up a drink since that day… I’m baffled as to not catching on sooner as well as the amount of wreckage that I’ve left behind.. I’m blessed to finally after all these years of pain …. Pain that I put myself through… it’s truly gone from my head to my heart… I accept the directions as my way out … I’ve been sold on the 12 steps of A.A. - Thanks for being here .. Honesty, Willingness and open-mindedness

I agree. He had a great message and was a great speaker. Come back to the Alano Club each month on the first Saturday to hear various circuit speakers.

Bob fell into a multi million dollar buisness is AA and i became a paramedic in AA. Alcohol is the great persuader it finally beat me into a state of desperation where i was willing to try anything. The trick is to keep doing what you know works when times are good

Definitely a recovery hero of mine. In early recovery he was to speak at a conference here.. i saw a guy my mind assumed was him right before he was to hit the podium. I got a few steps away from the guy all nervous to introduce myself and right as i stuck my hand out Bob introduced himself from the podium about fifty feet away. I almost introduced myself and fanboyed to a total stranger let alone not Bob haha close call.
