I went to Dubai and we decided the first game we should see was on Friday. Friday was game six. Magnus signed my board after at 1 o clock in the morning. Truly a generational player. Absolutely dumbfounded.....
That's so awesome
Amazing! I wish I was there.
E
"When Magnus Carlsen blunders he's still fine, but when you blunder you hang four queens" is the funniest sentence and relatable I've ever gotten from Levy
Truly one of the chess players in history!
Absolutely
Ah a cultured AnarchyChess follower I see
Absolutely, in fact one of the sportspersons across history
He definitely is a chess player yes! You said it well!
Well you're not wrong lol
Magnus mental fortitude is what really sets him apart. He’s willing and able to play long match after long match; and keeps his composure even in borderline lost positions after hours of play
And the absolutely Bizzare stuff he tries
His dad said even at a very young age he could concentrate hard on something for hours at a time

@@mi_-lt4ws When he was six, he memorized all the flags and capitals of every country in the world.
Another thing he does which is important is he looks at positions objectively.
I know this isnt about him but damn fabi did so well. Truly matched each other blow for blow in classical...
Fabi was fully on par with Magnus Carlsen. But he had no chance once he had to face Dr Drunkenstein.
@@catandfishfc legend has it magnus beat fabi in the the rapid whilst in a hot tub, listening to Eminem and drinking beer.
That was kinda Carlsens whole plan in that match though. Just draw and keep even until tiebreaks because he knew that fabi was miles below him in low time format
Man , the efforts you put in this video. Impressive work Gotham. 🤩
I love these long 43 minute chess videos so much

I have to appreciate Levy for consistently making chess games recaps sound like we're watching a horse race. Thank you for the enthusiasm and energy!
Hard to imagine now, but apparently Magnus was so nervous going into game 1 vs Vishy that he knocked his pawn over making the first move.
One of the Kramnik v Anand WC matches would make a really interesting recap! Considering how Kramnik was shook in 2008 when Anand finally played e4
I agree!!!! I thought Kramnik Anand 2008 was really high quality and had some of the most interesting games tbh

Gotham chess is easily the best chess channel on CZcams, I have been following him since I picked up chess after the Queens Gambit came out on Netflix. Since then I have rose from 500 ELO to 1500. He has helped me on my chess journey as well as providing fun and entertaining chess content. I can’t thank you enough for being such a inspiration for the past year and a half. We love you Levy and go for your dreams.

When did you start playing chess?
@@apothicons2506 I learned the rules when I was 6 am but nothing else
Good work man I’ve been stuck in the 900-1200 range for years so I know the work it takes to go from 500-1500. Nice job
@@michaelali4488 how does he increase a 1000 elo like that. I increase 50 and then completely lose my mind and go down 100
I swear that Magnus-Fabi match is so underrated. Ppl remember that it had 12 draws, but not HOW they were drawn. Half of those draws are 10 times more interesting than any decisive game in 2021 (beside game 6). Game 1 game 6 game 10 were some of the most complicated games I've ever seen
Yep. 12 hard fought games by the two best players on earth at the time. I'd take another match like that over the Nepo blunderfest every time.
Preach. Enough with the "muh draws", this was chess at its highest level
There are boring draws and there are fighting draws. Those were mostly fighting draws
Tbh I think most complaining about draws are very young and new to the game. Most of them have probably never played a classic.
I feel sorry for Caruana. He is brilliant (well, at least at classical) but he'll probably never be world champion just because Carlsen is too good. The guy even reached the 3rd highest rating ever, just behind Carlsen and Kasparov, but he's just not as good as Magnus. I think he could go down as one of the best to never actually become the best of his time.
I have an ok-ok story. A little context first, I am from India and Vishy is a literal god here. Everyone knows who he is here. So when he was beaten back in 2013, I was in 3rd or 4th grade and at the time our school used to give us these List of Current affairs for ever month. And Bamg right there the biggest one was Vishy lost to some Norwegian young dude named Magnus Carlsen. These current affairs lists-thingies were marked under the subject of general knowledge and would be graded. When the question paper came it had this news as a question like who beat vishy. Everyone wrote Magnus. Now the teacher who made these lists and gave to us like a month back made a spelling error and printed Magnus CARLSON. With an O. So everyone wrote it with an O. The not-so-everybody smart kids wrote it with an E. And there was this huge uproar of which one was correct. Parents argued with teachers. It was a 1 mark question in a 10 mark paper. HUGE DEAL for the parents who wanted their kids to score a 10. Ended with the teacher giving everyone a mark for that question.
This is a hilarious story, thank you for sharing!
AHAHAHAHA I can totally see this happening xD
That was the year that us Indians learnt Carlsen could be spelt with an e.

The game that left an impression on me and that I’ll never forget was Anand’s win, with the pawn push.
Happy Birthday to Levy’s grandpa. He’s as much of an OG as Levy

It's really cool seeing this happen. When I was just a kid on my grade school chess team, everyone talked about Bobby Fischer. And I was upset I wasn't around during his time.. Now Magnum Magnus come out, guns blazing and I get to see it. I feel like the biggest nerd ever for the words that just came out my mouth... But hey.. This is really interesting to me

Magnus is such a beast. I wonder who will challenge him next.

Fabi for sure

"Magnus doing Magnus things" is probably the most descriptive phrase of chess in our era. There are many great players playing today, Ian being one of them, but then you got this dude that looks at the engine evaluation screaming "Drawww!!" and goes "Sober up Stockfish, I'm winning this".
Clicked faster than levy cursing in his twitch stream.
Respect to mans, he coulda easily made this into an entire series and got tons of views but collapses all of it into a single masterpiece for anyone to have a look at, and instantly know all about magnus's reign in the world championship...
I need the series thoooo 🙏🏽
At the beginning level the queen is the most powerful but at the super grandmaster level the pawn is the most powerful
At engine level, tempo is the most powerful
Because the threat (in the case of a pawn, to become a Queen) is more powerful than its execution? Nimzowitsch would be proud to see you say that :-)
Karjakin drawing a game while -8 on Stockfish was amazing. An unholy fortress, Magnus kept pushing but Karjakin kept holding by some miracle.
Karjakin even managed a sweaty stalemate in rapid!
Hey, which game is this? Thank you!
@@matthewtalukdar3712 Game 4. Modern Stockfish only sees at -2 now (it was -8 at the time), but it's still an impenetrable fortress.
Game 2 of play-offs is the stalemate game.
I will also mention game 3, another miracle escape by Karjakin with a piece down.

@@UrGoneConcept thanks to you it took me about 6 seconds.
I'm pretty late to the chess party I had no idea this guy was winning all the way back in 2013
He was world number one back in Jan 2010.
The interesting thing is, he could have maybe won his first title in 2012 but he withdrew from the candidates tournament because he didn't like the format. It was a four game bracket with faster time control tiebreaks and Magnus thought it was too easy to draw the classical games and determine the winner in the rapid and blitz. In 2013, FIDE adopted the double round robin for the first time in something like 50 years. Magnus played, came perilously close to losing but managed to hang on, and the rest is history.

if you made a 5 hour long video explaining some of these games as a documentary about how carlsen has stayed world champion , i'd watch every second of it, multiple times, and i think im not the only one . thanks for making this, feels a bit rushed though.
I think I’d stop at about 1.5-2 hours

Who wants to see the other World Champions’ games who are 6x winners? I think it’s fair and cool. Plus he already shows a lot of Kasparov so it would be in his usual style. Let’s see if we can get a conversation on this, guys and gals.
Fantastic idea, I like it very much. But why stop on only 6x winners, why not cover all World Champions even if they hold it 'just' a year. No one has done it before or atleast I haven't seen anything similar. It can definitely be done in one year and it would be awesome to watch.
I'd like to see something about Lasker's reign. He was champ for 27 years. Pre-Fide.
Who are the 6x winners??
@@Nicks721 Lasker was an undisputed 6 time champ and reigned for 27 years (this was pre-FIDE). Kasparov and Karpov are also six times champs, though Kasparov only won 4 undisputed titles and Karpov only had 3. The others came during the era of FIDE and Garry's PCA, so the titles were split. Magnus is currently tied with Botvinnik for second most undisputed championships with 5, although Botvinnik never actually won a world championship match as world champ. He won the tournament to declare a world champ after Alekhine's death, drew Bronstein in his first defense, drew Smyslov in his second defense, then lost to Smyslov, defeated Smyslov as challenger in a rematch, lost to Tal, defeated Tal as challenger in a rematch then lost to Petrosian.

Thanks very much for this phenomenal recap. I can’t imagine all the work that goes into making this, but in 45 minutes I have both a great sense of the history of Magnus’s reign, as well as the drama and key moments. Talented commentator. I always learn a lot. Big fan of Gotham.
I had a really bad morning at work a bit ago. Your amazing recap of game 6 gave me the motivation i needed. Thank you, Gotham.
Anand lost to magnus and semi retired, karjakin lost to magnus and lost a lot of places in the rankings, caruana lost to magnus and is down like 50 elo points and 3/4 places in the top50, im sure its just coincidence but, its also interesting to see.
And this one has potential to be the worst collapse of a career
@@None-zv2qk we'll see. A lot of people liked Nepo's chances because he was one of the few that was not afraid of Magnus. I think he is now. Now who isn't afraid of Magnus? Firouzja isn't. I don't think Fabi is. Duda isn't. Rapport isn't. Luckily, most of those guys have qualified for the Candidate's. I predict that Carlsen won't lose the world championship to anyone roughly his age or older.
Yes. I've observed that as well. Fabi even said when he's in the commentary that the match took a toll a lot on you mentally. There were times where things would just hunt them down reminding them the "what ifs" of the game
@@12jswilsonwhat? very few people liked his chances
@@Kodaira023 relatively speaking. No one outside of probably his own team world give him over 50% chance. I think Ben Finegold said he would win the match 35-40% of the time. That's much higher than the rating difference would imply. Probably higher odds than other candidates during the last one outside of maybe Fabi or Ding
Levy have Magnus Carlsen and Carl Magnuson ever played each other before? I hear you talk about both often and would love to see a game between them!
After Game 6 I think Carl took over for Ian...
It’s Carlos Magnuson
Sweet video. In the Fabi match, game 8 really stood out as Magnus hanging by a thread against insane engine prep, and game 12 was notable when Carlsen had clear advantage but offered a draw. Appreciate that you had to pick and choose, though, and that game 6 was really a head scratcher. Thanks for the work in all this analysis!
I love this long videos and wish there were more. I would love a detailed analysis of all these world champion defenses.
It's so unfortunate that that 6th Carlsen-Nepo game, which was a brilliant game regardless of loss, seemed to break down Nepo. He's definitely a worthy opponent when he's on his game and I was hoping to see more but he blundered it away.
Carlsen seems to be the GOAT. Can't wait to see the next challenger. Maybe Firouzja (sry for spelling). He's been strong lately.
Nepo is a remarkable player but when you are a red-hot dynamic fast playing attacking sensation and you struggle to get it going, it's only natural your confidence is sapped against the literal chess embodiment of a boa constrictor. If you can't put him on the back foot, Magnus will grind you down and expose you. It's that simple.
@@blue-pi2kt good boa analogy about magnus' style but I think Carlsen winning had far more to do with Nepo losing. All was well up to and through game 6 and it all fell apart after that. Seems that people's points about Nepo going on tilt (for lack of better word) are true. There have been blunders in WC's but not like this or that many, you know? EDIT - I suppose I'm agreeing with you mostly. Those blunders were just something else.

Formidable. World class review Levy. Modern "attention span" content, depth and scope. Tied all the important moves from 5 matches which all came to 1 move, not seen in engines, and Fabi's missed NG1(?) - would have been. You're moving Chess here Levy.
I can't imagine how Caruana felt afterwards learning that there was a forced mate that probably would've won him the world championship
Mate in 30 was impossible for a human to find , Engines are complete lunatics they just play for 0.0000001 percentage advantage too . Fabi Must have moved on from that , still quite depressing 🥲
Levy needs a noble peace prize. The amount of people he’s inspired to enjoy the great game of chess, like myself, will continue past his time. Magnus might be the best chess player ever but Gotham is the best chess entertainer ever. Thank you Levy!
I was very confused at 1:42 until I realized I'd just finished watching your Anand vs Carson world championship recap...

Day 261.5 of translating Levy's titles to Russian: "5 чемпионатов мира Магнуса Карлсена"
day 161.5 of replying to _ruf [Roughly_]
I'd really like a recap on Game 1 of Carlsen - Caruana, that was an insane game if I recall correctly!
Awesome video, i was wondering if you would ever make a deep dive on who is the goat in chess by showing the lenghts of dominance and arguments on why those certain players are debated to be the goat (like fischer, kasparov, magnus, and so on). would be an interesting video and show the development and the ability's between the best players on each respected era
I thought this championship would be closer. Ian had been playing really well leading up to it and Magnus was showing just the smallest signs of being human. That is you can't be best forever. He was losing the odd game to some really strong players and he didn't quite seem on top of his game. To Magnus's credit he plays a lot but he didn't win some high profile tournaments. I wonder if he was using all these earlier games to give Ian a false sense of bravado and then Magnus returned to his rock solid and amazing style of play to knock Ian out of his zone. Game 6 was unbelievable that Magnus was confident to play 2 rooks against the queen and find a way to win after 8 hours. Incredible!!!
Great video, btw tho, how do I submit games for the elo guess thing?
Great video. If you’d ever find the time/interest, the imbalance in game 1 of Carlsen - Caruana would be great to have explained by you.
It was literally today where I went searching for recaps for every single game you've mentioned. How did you know this is what I wanted.
Thank for all you do! Im new to chess and so far 90% of my skill is from your channel, so thank you very much.

No complaints about the length Levy. You provide great content. Keep up the good work!
I'm a big fan of the content but personally I don't like when you skip ahead in the games I like to see how the position arrose and also I'm trash so it's kinda hard to follow. Great work on the recent vids keep it up!
This video is one of your bests. Watched till the end like always. What a Beast is Magnus, can't imagine someone beating him unless he let himself go. He will probably win the next two world championship and then resign unbeaten.
I remember I got really good at the Berlin endgame just from watching the matches back then...
Would really like to see a video on Magnus team of seconds! Obviously there is a bit of drama over Dubov right now, but besides that Peter Heine Nielsen is an awsome story in coaching two world champs, and it would be interesting to hear a bit about the career of each member of the team.
I took about 10 years off chess and came back this year. Thanks for updating me! Great content.
Getting really high and watching this long chess video has been one the coziest nights of my life
Levy is truly the goat. I mean I was wondering if there was a video on all of Magnus' WC games and boom the rozman strikes with a quality video like he always does. God bless your soul and I hope you get that GM title. GM Rozman vs GM Rosen for the world chess championship 2069, MAKE IT HAPPEN.
it’s been a year and a half since the last time i watched this video, somehow just noticed how beautiful that thumbnail is
Finally a Gotham video, been wondering if you're taking a break after the WC
I think without a doubt Game 6 of 2021 was Magnus AND Ian’s finest game ever. The best of the best moves, slow, raw, brutal but also incredibly artistic with how both players navigated their pieces for a slight advantage. Its not my favourite game of all times but it is by far the most impressive game of both of their careers! A true Magnus Opus pun intended
Here after ding vs nepo. Got into chess late last year early this year and its crazy to know that what happened in 2023 happened to ian before
