I know this video is a few years old but you did a great job. For new viewers like me I have a couple of suggestions as I used to build leather car seats: cut pie slices out of the raw shape as you go. staple 4-6 or 8 sides then cut. this will eliminate the excessive wrinkling you are getting and make the job much easier on you and faster. Also, after you have finished stapling the vinyl or leather, there's a good chance you will still have wrinkles or small pleats. This can not be helped but you can remove them. Using a heat gun or a good hair dryer, slowly work the wrinkles out. using your hands to smooth out the remaining wrinkles. Take it slow! You don't want to melt or burn the material! It will be hot to the touch so you may want to use simple work gloves. Cotton gloves with no rubber gripping on them will work to protect you from the heat or mechanic gloves. Good luck on future projects!

Thank you. I’ve watched more of these videos than I care to mention. Couldn’t believe the finished seat of the other “crafters” so kept looking and thankfully found yours. The stool I’m recovering is from my dads shop and had tacks vs staples. I’d like to keep it vintage with tacks but the staple option is very tempting. None the less, I feel I have the confidence to end up with a quality finished product. Thank you.

Hi Johnny! I just stripped the previous fabric from the seat cushions before I looked for videos on reupholstery. A couple tips: 1. put the staples in a container!!! 2. Cut off the seat cushion fabric top, in a circle near the edge; then cut the "ring" of fabric that's left; then use needle nose pliers to grab fabric and twist, twist, twist, pulling the staples up with the fabric; the fabric and many staples may come off in one go. Now I'll finish watching your video.

You needed to have a dacron batting around the foam to preserve the durability of the faux leather. Another reason is that the batting will provide a filler to the creased areas so as to eliminate those creases. You're doing good nevertheless. It will also provide a smoother, softer finish. Sorry, you may get offended with my suggestion, but you can ask any professional upholster installer.

Good vid... just a little tip. They make pliers that have a crescent shaped head. You grab the material and rock the pliers back on the hard substrate. This allows you to pull with incredible strength. I work with soaked leather so the chances of a rip are minimal but they definitely reduce wrinkles!
