Shure MV7 USB/XLR Mic Review / Test (Compared to SM7b, Podmic, Q2u, SM58)

- Today I review the USB Version of the SM7b, kind of…the MV7. This is a USB microphone which also has an XLR output which can be run simultaneously. It has basic DSP processing as well. If you’re looking for a USB Dynamic mic and $250 is your budget, I think it can sound great, and has some backup functionality via the XLR output if you run it to an external recorder. Also, the microphone is made in China.

Dude you just made my day a little bit better
I laughed out loud, thank you :)
Dude you really are the absolute best at this. No one reviews mics like you do. You're thorough, honest, funny, engaging and know what you're talking about yet have the ability to dumb it down for people like me who are very new to this sort of stuff. You're very very appreciated. Thanks for what you do
It's 2020 and they use micro instead of type C port
Such a detailed and entertaining review. I understand what a difficult edit it would have been but kudos to you for bringing us such meaningful, useful and quality content. ❤️
This was the most thorough mic review I’ve ever watched. Told me everything I could possibly want to know. Excellent work!
Great review. I have the sm7b for the studio and mv7 for a portable setup. Tweaking a few things I learned here. Thanks!
Thanks for a solid review as always, Bandrew. This was the one I was waiting to watch to get the gold standard review. Detailed and full-featured as always! Many thanks.
I've watched dozens of reviews. This is by FAR the most thorough! Thank you! Instant subscribe from me!
You did a really nice job with the comparisons and packed more info into 28 mins than most do in 45 or more.
Amazing review, thank you so much for making this! My favorite was the SM7b and then the MV7, Procaster and SM58 are all close. I do think though that the Shure ones sound better for your voice compared to the Rode ones but that is entirely subjective. Thank you for going through all the settings and through all those tests, it was very comprehensive. It's not like I'm gonna buy it but I enjoy a good quality sound and your reviews deliver that, plus music, plus character so it's a nice package. Wish you all the best, keep doing what you love no matter what.
Kudos! I have watched several of your reviews of usb microphones and I have ALL the information! Your reviews are second to none! Hands down the best reviews on the web! You cover all the bases! Thank you!
Always love your reviews! You definitely have the most thorough mic reviews on CZcams! Stay golden.
One of the best microphone review I've ever seem. Thank you!
okay this was the best review ive ever seen. this is exactly what i was looking for
I always wait for your mic reviews, thanks again for another great video.
This is the most helpful review I have seen on CZcams in a long time! thank you!
Nice, thorough review as always - thanks Bandrew. The in-built analogue to digital converter sounded pretty good to me as well. And for those needing a USB mic, I liked the MV7 most of those you sampled here.
I agree.
Great mic indeed, for on the go recording looks great.
@@makatron
Great built and great sounding mic indeed. My only complaint is that capacitive gain/volume touch slider. Great idea, very poor execution. It is so unresponsive and clanky that I was actually convinced I had landed a defective unit! Instead of the LED indicators smoothly following the slide of your finger, you're having to repeat the motion multiple times for the intended adjustment to finally take effect! It feels like a flaw! I had already filled out all the necessary forms to start the Repair Request process and even printed out the shipping label ready to send it to the manufacturer to be fixed. I was about to take a trip to the post office when it occurred to me to call their tech support and see if there was a chance for me to possibly fix the issue myself. The Shure agent explained that this was indeed how it was supposed to work. I was shocked! I wouldn't hold this against other brands, but I'd expect better from Shure.
@@IllusionSector yeah I'd say the Rode Podmic still outperforms this in best bang for buck department.
@@makatron
Thanks. Wish I had known.
Got way more than what I was expecting! gonna pick up the rode podmic tho! Subscribed!
Looked for your video as soon as I heard about the mic, and here it is! Thanks for this!
Your reviews are so fun and informative. Thank you B.
As always: quality content Bandrew! Thanks! Looks like I will stick to my Rode Podmic for now.
Great Review. I am convinced to buy it. From price point of view, i think its a bit high for new/hobbyist podcasters. The XLR option is great makes it future-proof for newbies. Definitely better sounding than Blue Yeti, Samson and Rode NT1 USB
I really hope you take care of yourself and not feel too bad in the current situation. I'm also very thankful for all your videos and the amount of work that you put into them! Sending you lots of love from Poland!
Thank you for the thorough review. I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. My dang old XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly!
YES! When I saw the gazilion reviews of the MV7 mics online, I was looking forward to seeing yours! 🙌
@Club Soda exactly! And I have zero use for music, just wanna make my livestreams and meditations sound better. I’ve got a Blue Yeti and honestly it’s overrated and been looking for an upgrade so this one seems perfect!
@@jaimetan I'd love to hear your thoughts as I currently have a blue yeti and wanna switch to this MV7
microusb in 2020. holy shit.
It’s microusb forever. FOR-EV-ER!!!!!!
Damn I just came to make this comment. Micro USB to type C feels like an insult.
Yeah this is an insult in that price point, type-C is the future.
Hallo Alexi
@@aRTzu. Feel the power of the Micro USB! MWAHAHAHA!
Always worth the waiting! This video was the most complete about the MV7 I've watched so far. Thanx, man. =)
Very thorough review! I've been using the MV7 for almost 2 months now with usb and it sounded awesome as is, the shure motiv app is great at keeping things simple,
and just a few days ago finally got a scarlett focusrite to use in xlr, it's a great mic and love that it is upgradeable in that aspect
Just a scratching my head a bit due to the mount options, the only shock mounts I could see for this is a top hanging shock mount
Thank you for trying to test the microphone without being "influenced".
The Shure MV7 without the sponge is a bit weird. It reminds me a bit of when I was young and I see Robocop without his helmet.
Maybe it will be good to prepare an episode with microphones that are not really dedicated to the Podcast, but which can give a good result (like some Shotgun microphones).
By far the best video on the Shure MV7 - nice work! Your attention to detail is impressive. The mic sounds surprisingly similar to the SM7b - was plosives the main difference you noticed in the sound?
Thanks man, I appreciate you taking the time and energy to help us make an informed decision about the microphone to buy , love ya
Thanks for your amazing mic test man. Can't find anything better, it really helps me making the right choice for my next upgrade!
This seems surprisingly good. It would be ideal for creators who travel or need remote setups. I'm going to consider buying it
I share your opinion: For me it becomes an option for remote work and travelling. That would be much easier to process than with an SM 7B. You can use USB if you want and XLR if you need and have the possibilities.
Make full sense for travel, podcasts on the go, or discussion on special events where you need to go (coverage) : This + an iPad would do a pretty descent job !
Hello guys . Which one to buy for quality sound ? Shure MV7 or Rode Podcaster USB ?
@@Masda.X Both Mics have amazing sound quality and cannot go wrong with both of them. Personally I am biased on the MV7 microphone because I have it and use it almost everyday. I love it for its multi-functionality with USB and XLR capabilities + The Motiv App that you can use with it. But buy whatever mic you want and get the mic that suits your voice!

That Procaster is so pleasingly warm, and the sE V7 shocks me every time with its amazingly detailed airy upper treble without being too bright. MV7 has some tough competition here clearly
I’m currently deciding between the two. I’m planning on using my mic with xlr. I also don’t mind playing the extra 30$ and the shure is in silver. What do you recommend getting?
I'm always happy when a new review comes out and the sE V7 still sounds great in the comparison.
I struggle with the procaster vs mv7 as well... the micro USB seems so fragile. I am really not sure.. :/
@@Sylisioh94 the USB would be fairly durable as long as your not knocking the cable about violently. But I suppose it would depend how easy it would be to fix
e solder the connections. If you're careful it should be fine. Not like you'll be swinging this microphone like a 70s or 90s rock star
Best microphone review I ever watched. Answered all questions, covered all topics. And things I didn't think are important to know
The minute I saw the MV7 pop up on Google news I got stoked for your review. Thanks, Bandrew!
You are the best microphone reviewer on CZcams, period. Thank you for doing all the tests you do, including keyboard tests for us gamers/streamers.
That really means a lot. Thank you kindly.
I literally just heard about this microphone today. This review couldn't have come out at a more perfect time. Much gratitude brother!
The embargo was lifted yesterday, that's why it's all over CZcams. The way Bandrew makes his in-depth videos takes a very long time to film and edit, so it's safe to say he's had this microphone for a week, if not more. Bandrew's review was probably the most anticipated of all.
Got the email from Shure yesterday. Came to my subscriptions today looking for Bandrew’s review... DID NOT disappoint... thank you sir.
thanks for taking the time to create this review, its been helpful
The rode procaster sounds really good with your voice.
As always great content and great comparison, I loved this video. Now this may be why I’m not a musician but to me this mic sounded eerily close to the sm7b almost too close and for half the price with both XLR and USB functionality for seemingly upgradability (from usb to xlr) etc. in all honesty to me there was almost no notable difference.
I have been watching you for years and I have zero need for a microphone, just a nerd who appreciates good audio and your dope ass reviews
best review of this mic. i'm considering picking this up for travel. thanks for another detailed review.
I definitely like the sound of the MV7 more than all the mics you compared it too, with the sole exception being the SM7b. That being said, I definitely think that the MV7 will make people think twice before spending at least an additional $150 on the SM7b, when you can get a Shure dynamic mic that sounds extremely good for $250 instead of $400.
yeah also counting the costs of the audio interface, cloud lifter,, xlrs and needing phantom power etc vs just usb too mv7 is pretty neat
Good stuff. I knew you had to have one too so I was looking forward to hearing your take. I thought it sounded better than the other dynamic USBs and pretty darn close to the 7B and even 58. I've got mine on the boom for the foreseeable future as there's no doubt I'll have more question to answer;)
Really enjoyed it. Great review of a promising entry for some podcasting/VO users on a limited budget or seeking to work with a small equipment list.
man you are just a god, everytime i wanna upgrade my mic you are always there so i know which one to buy, you review every part of the mic and i thank you for that
When you zoomed in on your chin I died 😂 great video!
Sounds pretty good and I'm happy you compared it to the PodMic like a few others have. So far it doesn't seem like there's a good reason for me to replace my PodMic. It still sounds solid. Like you said, I feel this is mostly for people who want this type of mic but with a USB output.
Already have one and I love it for what I do. Super thorough review and the Motiv run through was a real help for a newb. Cheers!
Been watching quite a lot of your background noise dynamic videos and sounds like this one is the winner. it has the style of the SM7B without the price tag, and with it sounding so good in USB mode, it cuts the costs of needing the extra hardware right away if ever. For doing voiceover work this seems like the winner. Wish it was around when I got my Rode NT USB but then I had no idea how important dynamic mics were for my specific use case
For 250 it's a worthy investment that's not going to break the bank for mid range content creators who do talking head and voice overs.
The Shure MV7 sounds very nice and warm even using it in “usb mode”. I think this is a great mic for the price point. People can use it through usb for awhile. Then later on, they have the option to switch to XLR if they want a touch higher quality and more opportunity with a mixer. Great review by the way!
Great video as always Bandrew. Quick question? You had the gain for the MV7 using the XLR set to 100% on your interface. Is the the MV7 as gain hungry as the SM7B or the Procaster? Would a cloud lifter or a fethead make a significant difference to the xlr quality?
Just came here to say, this videos are Amazing, they are quick and go straight into the point
Thank you for a detailed review. It wasn't too long. You did a good job presenting the features and of each mic. Overall, I think the Shure MV7 sounded much better than a majority of the mics.
Does anyone else say the plosive test phrase with Bandrew like me? 😂😂 'Please bring pizza pronto'
Definitely
I always think to myself "I really want pizza now"
I think he needs to add “Alexa”, “Siri”, or “Hey Google” to the start of the sentence :).
Podmic $100 is still my best choice, Thank you for reviewed.
Yeah, that's my go-to phrase for plosives test.
Whoa been waiting for this!
great review, bc of how in depth this is but also the box throw was the cherry on top
Amazing, in-depth review. After scouring youtube for good reviews of microphones I think I finally found a reviewer to stick with. You’re great, articulate and to the point!
I’m currently looking for a great mic to do voice overs in an untreated room and it seems that the landscape of USB mics has changed a lot since MV7 was released. There’s Samson, the NT1 has usb-c now and I would LOVE to see a review of the new Deity VO-7U. It has a hardware analog limiter which MV7 lacks.
I already bought my microphone, but I still end up watching his videos for fun.. 😅
Best review of all. And not the over deep voice as every else try to show the mv7
Thanks for the very helpful review. Got this over the Podmic. The two option of USB and XLR really helped me keep just one Mic on my WFH Setup. I use a windows machine for work and ms teams (USB) and a Macbook (XLR via Interface) setup for songwriting. So I only use one microphone for both.
Great, detailed review! Looking to upgrade from Samson Go mic to a dynamic usb mic for voice podcasting (not music), and this might be on the top of my list. Have simple setup using an ipad pro, and I liked the natural sound quality based on your tests. Great channel, look forward to other videos.
Been waiting for this since yesterday
Its 2020 and it uses micro usb -_- but it comes with a micro usb to usb c cable wtf is that?!?!
It's totally diabolical!
That is like the stupidest idea ever for real.
Micro-USB sucks and is extremely fragile... That's like a huge no no for me.
It's like they're not even trying to hide it.
An insider view is the product probably started dev a while ago and dragged along until marketing finally made up their mind to release it, and then jammed it into production. Change to USB C and miss the release window (again) or leave it be and we'll revise it later, which for Shure will not be anytime soon.
Bought this mic like 2 years ago and the micro usb broke in like 3 months, but I got a cheep xlr interface and I'm still using it to this day
Now this is a proper review video. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Its so nice to see a proper review covering all the bases and not just some dude talking "directly" into the mic not covering anything else. Awesome.
VERY helpful review. Thank You!! Also just joined your discord and already had helpful convo with your community!

Yes this mic is not up to much in reality
Everyone here has watched all the mv7 videos. We all waited for his video and know he is the GOAT of mic reviews. Once I saw this video it helped so much. Love this guy
I love when I make a judgement in my mind about a particular thing I’m hearing from the mic in review, and you (B’Andrew) say the same thing at the end😍. I too thought the USB sounded considerably better than the XLR. This mic is cool but tbh I’d just save up for the SM-7B if you’re going for that sound.
This is an excellent through review and mic comparison. Budget is a factor I'll look at one of the other mics the audio quality sounds the same if not better for a few. I will be listening to this a few times to make a final decision. Thank you so much!

Considering themicro-USB to USB C cable, they have literally no excuse to use micro-USB.
Thank you for the exhaustive comparisons. Very helpful overall.

This guy is like the God of comparing microphones.
Wondering how this going to compare with Elgato Wave 3.
I was waiting for this review from you!
This guy is amazing. So much useful stuff covered. Subbed.
I really like how you did this review using USB instead of XLR.
Edit: They used MicroUSB on the mic since the mic uses USB 2.0 so there is no benefit of the USB-C port, though they did include a MicroUSB to USB-C cable so modern computers can still connect with an adapter. USB-C would have been very nice but in terms of improvement, it does nothing to change the quality of the mic.
This mic is in a weird spot for me. $250 seems steep. Feels like it should be $200 or around $175. At $250, you can buy a RODE PodMic for $99 and have $150 to spend on a good audio interface. Yet, this mic has USB (which can be used at the same time as XLR) so it already works on everything and sounds pretty good. If you ever wanted to upgrade to an audio interface in the future, you don't need to buy a new mic to get better sound. Because of that, I'm probably going to end up buying it in the coming months. I want to rid of my Blue Yeti but don't want to drop hundreds on a good Mic and interface just yet. It has many use cases, especially for people who stream using two computers as this once microphone can be used on both at the same time. When you take away the sound and look at the mic from a hardware/software perspective, it's a very good deal. Still a bit steep at $250 but I would say it's worth it.
The PodMic comparison was the most striking, I think because it came right after all the USB mics which did sound much worse, when he got to that I was immediately like "$100, sounds just as good". Combined with the fact that it did sound worse to me too with XLR, using a good interface, this is not as versatile as you might hope. Still I think the price and features will make it a good choice for a lot of use cases.
@@BCThunderthud I think the podmic is really good but somebody like me doesn't have an audio interface already so if I bought the podmic, I would still end up paying $200+ in total for both parts. In my mind, I can spend that money and get a good mic and in the future when I'm ready to buy an interface, I don't have to upgrade mics. Best of both worlds without breaking the bank upfront. If people already have an interface, then I would defiantly go podmic 100% and save $150.
"so, is this mic any good?"
"Shure..."
"right, that still leaves me a bit lost though..."
"sure."
