This was her 1st appearance on this program and of course she won. She also won a National Award for Lean on Me.
Michael Bolton saw this performance and called it "virtuoso performance" and invited her to his concert in Korea for a duet. and they sung "prayer" & "lean on me"
PS. This stage was won the 'Best TV show award' at the Banff International Media Festival.
There are video’s where the film continues for michaels reaction but basically, when the host went to him he literally couldn’t speak, he just laughed, Sohyang rendered MB speechless!! no surprise there then, it happens to us mere mortals all the time. When he composed himself he went on to say how that was he song he regularly sang in his own show & then all he could say to Sohyang was ‘that was SPECTACULAR!!’ with the emphasis very much on the word spectacular. She obviously made a big impression on him because she has joined him on stage quite a few times now when he has been on tour in Asia ( there are video’s of this too @ I will dig out the link for you asap).
Although I really respect sohyang’s decision to follow the path she has in rejecting all offers from the big record companies for a recording deal & choosing to stay low key in Korea, goin at her own pace & doing what she wants to do. There is no doubt that if she had take the route of the fame & fortune that her voice surely merits, she would’ve been resounding success, particularly here in the west where thanks to the power of CZcams she is starting to get heard. You can’t deny that she could’ve held her own with the so called greats, Whitney, Mariah, celine & Christina & depending on what she is singing can stand toe to toe with any of them, she has elements of them all it seems within her, but crazy as it may seem to us the path that she followed, only those who like Sohyang have battled cancer & have beaten it but been left numerous ongoing health issues because of it, could ever understand how a brush with death could change your priorities & your whole way of thinking about what is most important to you. I suppose we should just appreciate however long it has taken for us to discover her it’s better than not hearing her at all!!
I have seen all your Sohyang reactions & obviously you are going by what you are recommended but most of these performances are from a similar time period & are the same big live productions for TV but there are a couple of other different blocks of performances that you may want to try. Firstly, her stint on the show ‘king of masked singer’. Immediately before her appearance on this show she was considering giving up singing altogether,she didn’t know if she was good enough ( which is bonkers,right!!) so by performing behind the mask meant she could perform somewhat anonymously. We watch it now & think surely they must know it’s Sohyang but I saw an interview where she said only one other person involved on the panel knew who she was. You have to remember that she wasn’t even a mainstream star in Korea, she was only really known in the gospel community,which isn’t the biggest group of people in Korea. Anyway she set records for the number of weeks she was ‘queen’ , which was 7 weeks after the initial battle rounds. In my opinion these performances are some of her best vocally & exhibit a number of genre’s, inc. rock & rap apart from the usual. Once you get past the stupid mask it’s obvious it’s Sohyang ( the mask is pretty mild compared to the crazy things that have been seen in the eng/US versions of the show!!)
Another group of performances are a lot more recent, they were performed on different dates during covid under the banner ‘begin again Korea’. These were mini gigs performed to very small audiences at different places, again for TV as a way to get people to see artists performing during lockdown. The concept of the show was a small ensemble of already established singers/musicians would do these more acoustic performances & the core of the group stayed more or less the same with a few changes here & there but taken from the same pool of performers. Sohyang wasn’t part of this pool but only joined in parts because although the bulk of the ensemble was made up of ‘young’ pop stars, they did usually have a resident ‘elder’ & I don’t know the reason but the usual ‘elder’ had to drop out & to get quickly to the point, Sohyang helped them out for a number of venues. These are my very favourite Sohyang performances because where lesser vocalists may struggle with the limited musical accompaniament in this very live scenario ( they were basically busking) her amazing vocals just soared & in my opinion elevated her to another level that I hadn’t seen from anyone. Spine tingling performance after performance of songs that were a mixture of Korean songs & English songs that had been hits worldwide. I know you like to see other people’s reactions & in these performances you get to see some audience reactions but even more fun is that you get to see reactions from the other already famous themselves for singing etc fellow performers. She had them staring in awe with mouths open & then she’d have them crying!!!! Again she covered numerous genre’s in these shows & again I will mention rap because yes, this lady can rap, even amongst all these young pop stars, she took the bulk of the rap because quite simply she was the best rapper!!! Her ‘out of this world’ vocal technique is so amazing that it allows her to adapt to any genre she wishes. The first of these performances to be released was her performance of Whitney’s ‘I will always love you’ like you never heard it before. Stripped back, it was so ‘live’ that you can even hear the breeze blowing in the microphone, it was a very hot day & she was sat down & OMG!! she blew me away, even by Sohyang standards, she just excelled in this more acoustic setting where there was nowhere to hide. You have to check this performance out guys, even if it means you go ‘off list’, even if it’s just to prove to you that this woman is even better now than she was when she did the performances that you have seen so far. After that it’s hard to put the other performances in any order because they were all of a standard that was mind boggling but I think my fav is her performance of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’ which showed me that she can also sing jazz, which isn’t the easiest thing to sing, which I hadn’t heard her sing up to that point.
I’m sorry about the long comment but you both look so happy watching Sohyang & want you to experience as many different ways possible that this ‘angel on earth’ has to blow your minds.

When coming into a Sohyang performance, we have come to expect spectacular vocal feats. Her ability to amaze and startle almost seems commonplace for those who've watched her stages. It's reactions that demonstrate that true magic of Sohyang's voice continue to fascinate and energize me. Thank you for such a pleasant reaction. Yes, Michael was taken aback by So Hyang and called her a virtuoso (which we all know is the case). They did some concerts afterwards at that time, on his invite, and have since worked together. I just don't know another singer like So Hyang. This like full contact Gospel singing!!! She is treating this the way a middle linebacker would handle singing. Then her back-up singers DO NOT get enough credit for what they bring. This is the same as when she sang that Josh Groban song and the guy from a British male singing group was there because he sang it 'normal' and did well and she had her way with it and it was like Salieri and Mozart all over again. In the movie, Amedeus, there is a scene where Salieri, played by F. Murray Abraham writes a song for his Prince or King, then Mozart shows up and the Prince asks him to take a look at it. Mozart can't help himself he starts adding to it until there is little of the original piece left other than a germ of the melody. It was there that Salieri decides to plan to destroy Mozart. In Amedeus, Tom Hulce gives the performance of his life and Abraham got the Oscar for best actor. Hulce deserved that Oscar for best actor. If you watch the movie you'll see what I mean. It is a great rainy day movie. It's probably on YT for streaming. Well there is my ADD coming to the front, again.
