The Shins are a band you regret not paying more attention to the first time around. Their Discography is nuts and has no bad songs. It's a band you will see again and realize who they are and that you've heard them. Continue listening to them, they only get better the more you listen to.

This is a very special song to me. Was sent to me by someone I was head over heels for when I was a teenager. Things didn't work out and it still stings almost 15 years later. This song still leaves a pit in my chest. I reckon it'll always be special to me. Just like the memories of that person.
This makes my soul smile. This song tickles my brain in the best way. I love this band so much.

Lex was spot on with this one. I can picture the scene. The person just got up the courage to quit the job they hate. They're driving peacefully down the highway, thinking about all the possibilities their future holds, this song is playing on the radio and BOOM!!!!! They get sideswiped by a semi. 😟
This was one of my forever 32 year old's favorite songs. It's from one of his favorite movies, Garden State. He loved the entire soundtrack, therefore mine, as well! In the movie, guy meets girl and she tells him, "this song will change your life"! BTW, they were in a doctors office! LOL

I had this song as my phone ringtone back when ringtones were the best thing you could do on phones. 😆 Specifically, it was set for my new girlfriend/now wife, kind of as a signal for the new era of my life coming out of the depression and loneliness I had felt for the years previous to the new relationship. Still brings strong feelings to hear The Shins, and don't know why it goes years between my listens!
I first heard this group from the Garden State movie soundtrack. I really like this song.
My favorite is “Caring is Creepy”
The Shins - master songwriters. This one was on the soundtrack for Garden State - no foreboding meaning. Please react to their song Phantom Limb, best thing they've written and genius song. Yes, a lot in common with The Beach Boys, or rather Brian Wilson specifically.
Sometimes I think their lyrics are just about making sounds that are pretty, but I like the music. James Mercer is in another band called Broken Bells that i love. Songs by them: High Road, Ghost Inside, Holding on for Life, After the Disco, The Mall & Misery
Finally, somebody else who acknowledges the existence of Broken Bells!
High Road had me in a clutch hold for way too long.

I asked my 66 yr old brother what one album would you have on a deserted island and he said "The Shins" I was shocked as he had lived through the late 60s, early 70s. He introduced me to Led Zeppelin!! I don't know who my brother is anymore!! 🙄

You’ve reacted to Siouxsie & The Banshees - Peek a boo months ago. Did you know that Siouxsie & Budgie (the drummer) formed The Creatures - a side project in 1980s. Their first album ‘Feast’ was a gem. Different to The Banshees music, very experimental. Check out ‘Festival of Colours’ from that album.
Siouxsie and the Banshees has a lot of better songs than "Peek a Boo" that these 2 should react to.

I love that song too, but a lot of Shins 'purists' don't favor Port of Morrow compared to earlier records.

The shots of James in the car recreate The Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime. I've always wondered if there's a visual reference to Under the Table and Dreaming, but haven't seen in confirmed.

I discovered this great band from the movie Garden State.
The banana slip is a very weird take.
This is one of those songs that you really need to read the lyrics to understand that you have NO IDEA what they are singing about.
This is indie rock at its finest. It reminds me a lot of Weezer, but with a different kind of delivery. What's it about? Duh, nerd love! There aren't a lot of songs in this world that give me goosebumps every time they come on, but this is one that does. Plus,it's the song that Natalie Portman plays for Zach Braff in the movie "Garden State" and says, "This song will change your life".
Good to see you found The Shins ... my favorite of theirs is a song called Girl Sailor. Another underrated and often unknown band is an Australian band called the Lucksmiths. Hey, when you guys are feeling adventurous and want to explore some very interesting rock history, please, please, please check out some Captain Beefheart. Rolling Stone magazine had one of his albums (Trout Mask Replica) on their top 500 albums of all time ... his was number 60. I wouldn't start with that album though.I met the dude several times and what a great storyteller. Tread into his work gently so you don't get scared away (it's not obscene of offensive, just a very different sound). Something like "This is the Day" or "Observatory Crest" would be a good start, as much of his stuff is SO avant garde ... he used to be neighbors with Frank Zappa. He inspired so many artists. last time I ran into him was at a 7-11 store, he was buying some ice cream. Peace to you and your family.

It was chill, but it's also bittersweet. In this context, the bittersweet tone that comes and goes, makes you feel like something bad happened or is gonna happen. But it's also chill.

Chutes too narrow and winching the night away are masterpieces
The quality of the tracks on both of these albums is absolutely nuts. Chutes Too Narrow is the only album that I can listen to without feeling the need to skip songs, all of the songs are amazing. My favorites are Young Pilgrims, Saint Simon, Pink Bullets, Gone for Good, Those To Come, Australia, Spilt Needles, Girl Sailor and A Comet Appears. Which is basically half of the albums😂
Every time I heard that song I feel like I’ve seen it in a classic movie scene.. like where someone is dying .. or there’s a war going on .. I guess it reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel and The Graduate kind of relationship 😂

The scenes of the band in the water look like they're trying to recreate the cover of the the Slint album Spiderland, which you should check out. "Good Morning Captain" was on the soundtrack to the film "Kids," and is as good a place to start as any.

I like the nod to various album covers from classic underground indie bands from the 80s - Husker Du, The Replacements and the Minutemen.
What a brilliant song
I believe the concept she is trying to is express is that the song is emotionally evocative, and I couldn't agree more. It would be the perfect song, in a movie to create the desired atmosphere before a sudden tragedy. I have been a fan of the Shins since this song came out, but I really want someone to react to Caring is Creepy.

I went to see the White Stripes in 2007 and the Shins opened for them. I ended up liking them more than the Stripes. That may have had a lot to do with me not liking The White Stripes current album at the time, but The Shins really stood out.

Definitely used to be a fan of theirs. I went one time to see a concert that had them in it. The headliner was Modest Mouse, supported by The Shins and a couple of other bands. Already knew who they were, but I was most excited to see Modest Mouse. Yet it was The Shins that ended up stealing the show. They really blew me away and by comparison, Modest Mouse was kinda off that night which was disappointing.
