What is Hyaluronic Acid? What is Hyaluronic Acid Good For?
Hyaluronic Acid is a glycosaminoglycan, unfortunately known as a GAG. Its naturally found in the extracellular matrix of almost every cell in your body. It’s a linear polysaccharide, which means it's made up of repeating sugar units bound together. Think of it as a sugary carb. Also what most people dont know is that it acts as a cushion and a lubricant in the joints and other tissues in the body, because its really good at trapping water inside tissue cells.
Does Hyaluronic Acid Work? Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer.
The hyaluronic acid has a very large molecular size and can't go through the top layer of the skin. This is why hyaluronic acid injectable filler was created in the first place, because the molecules are too big to sink through the skin naturally. All the natural hyaluronic acid that's already in your skin, is found in the dermis, the deeper layer. The upper layer or the epidermis has very little hyaluronic acid, it really only shows up if there is a cut and the skin needs to close up.
The hyaluronic acid that the body has is way different than what's in your skincare products. The holding the “1,000 times its weight in water” is how the bodys version does that, there doesnt seem to be any available studies that show the products you use- actually do that.
Hyaluronic Acid Dries My Skin. Hyaluronic Acid Drying.
Hyaluronic Acid dehydrates the skin. Especially if your skin is already dehydrated to begin with and the air is dry. What ends up happening is that it actually sucks water from deeper in the skin and has an opposite effect, leaving the skin dryer and even thirstier.
Theres this idea that if you live in an area with low humidity 30% or less, the hyaluronic acid will draw moisture from your skin, instead of the air leading to dryness. But heres the catch,
Its going to pull from the nearest source. Which is your skin. The benefit of that is that it temporarily makes the skin look smooth and hydrated, but what happens when all that moisture evaporates? Your skin gets dehydrated.
Using Hyaluronic Acid with a Moisturizer. How to Use Hyaluronic Acid Serum?
You still need to use it in conjunction with other moisturizers. This is because hyaluronic acid isn't a moisturizer. Its a plumper. It was never really a moisturizer. One way to circumvent the problem is by applying it on damp skin, then using the hyaluronic acid, then sealing it with a moisturizer. The moisturizer will help seal hydration into the skin and help the hyaluronic acid absorb correctly.
Hyaluronic Acid and Redness. Is Hyaluronic Acid Worth it?
Its a sugar so theoretically what you could be doing without even knowing, is feeding this sugar to a type of fungus that's naturally found on your skin. Dermatophytes. Once they eat up the sugars, theyll secrete an enzyme that breaks down your skin's barrier.
The skin doesn't take in skincare products as easily as it should sometimes, and it becomes more irritated when you try too many products, and can sometimes take about a month or longer for the skin to repair itself when it gets dehydrated from humectants. And the thing is, When we are younger, the skin takes about 28 days to renew itself but this slows down to 70 days when we get older!

Dude! HA molecules are too large to penatrate the skin. Use a HA oral supplement. Works great. I recommend Jarrow brand. They use high quality labs. Inexpensive too.

This makes so much sense! Plus I've noticed if I use a dedicated HA serum my skin feels worse, even when applying to damp skin. Snail mucin, panthenol and glycerine do the job way better

THANK YOU for doing the research and speaking the truth!! There are few people out there doing this.
The skincare and cosmetic industry (as well as most dermatologists) are promoting HA which in my opinion is a marketing ploy (although SOME just don't know as they haven't done the deep dive research)
About 8 months ago I began learning the real science truth about how topical HA, Trenton and caffeine are contributing to thin skin and lessening of the fat pads in our face and that 'fat loss' with weak skin is what we don't want.
The person that has been sharing this info studied the research that Shiseido and others have done.
I'm a consumer and we usually go with what the mfg's tell us but do we really know what works and what is marketing hype 🤔🧐

I have found that when I use too many sugar-based humectants that my skin becomes irritated. Greatly reducing the HA in my routine (and cutting out those "sugary" products) has helped a lot. Can't really go wrong with glycerin either. I also realized I was probably "over hydrating." Now I limit myself to one toner application and no longer feel the need for dedicated hydrating serums. Almost everything has all those ingredients in them anyway, so now I focus on active ingredients that address my particular concerns and let the passive parts of the formulations do their thing. That has the added benefit of streamlining the products in my rotation as well, which also reduces the possibility of irritation.

For 3 years I thought I had fungal ance cuz almost everything I used even fragrance free was giving me tiny red itchy bumps as the day went by. Then I saw another CZcams dermatologist explain how HA cause sensitivity and boom I eliminated it from my whole routine and I don't have that issue anymore for the last 6 months. I even tried to use one product my sunscreen which had only 1 form of hyaluronic acid and still dried out my face and gave my tiny red bumps. It's not for everyone and I have dry sensitive reactive skin.

Great video. I had a look at the serum that I used and on their website, they claim 2 things: 1. The product uses a "Multiweight Hyaluronic Acid"
With a unique ability to attract and retain more than 1,000 times its own weight in water, hyaluronic acid draws moisture from the surrounding atmosphere into the skin, leaving the complexion both nourished and supple. then it also advises under the science behind the serum - "The natural red-purple hue comes from the antioxidant powerhouse saskatoon berry. Bright purple and packed with legendary anthocyanins - exceptional antioxidants which fight off free radicals - saskatoon has another superpower up its sleeve. It can help to inhibit the enzyme which breaks down excess hyaluronic acid within the skin, leaving the upper layers overflowing with hyaluronic acid for the ultimate plumped up, youthful-looking complexion." This year for some reason, I have been getting a lot of i'm not sure if spider veins or broken capiliaries across my cheeks and chin. I will stop using this go to the Inkey instead.

I have been applying the HA serum for about 6 months, and all it does is dry out my skin. I knew that this was doing the opposite to my 70+ skin! Tossed in garbage. But I do have Polyglutamic Acid and it does agree with me. That's my new go-to.

I’ve always had my suspicions about serums and expensive skincare, I think most are gimmicks and snake oil. I’ve only used antibacterial dial soap and cetaphil lotion on my face for 2 decades, I’m almost 40 and don’t have a single fine line or wrinkle. I DO take collagen/HA/vit C supplements. I also don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or eat a lot of sugar. The old saying “you are what you eat” definitely applies to your skin. Take care of your insides and it’ll show on your outside.

It explains why I have never seen any benefits of using it.....I thought it was just me, but now I know its a scam.... I did use a sample of a new version of HA recently from another company, which is made with smaller molecules, and I must admit, I felt slight benefits, but still not sure if long term if it does anything, not sure if it only moisturisers the skin for a few hours then the HA just evaporates... Thanks for this Video, its good to know, God bless :)

Some of what I learned from the other person is like what you said that topical HA molecule is too large to enter the skin but the creams etc put like microscopic holes into the epidermis (trying to get the HA in) and that draws water from deep in the dermis, hence creating shrinkage of the healthy fat which gives our skin the plumpness.
*Of course this is my verbiage, not verbatim how he said it. :)
