Thing that impressed me the most about this season was when they had the jury come back and do a confessional saying what they were looking for at final tribal. Fantastic editing choice and needs to stick from here on out.

What I loved most about this season was the balanced edit. Every jury member got bare minimum 20 confessionals, and the last five episodes in a row had at least one confessional from everyone still in the game. Seasons work best when we get to hear everyone talk about their gameplay and strategy, both good and bad, and I’m very glad the editors made sure everybody was showcased.

The main thing I loved about the season were the different storylines and character arcs that were told.
Mike and Maryanne are two completely unique archetypes and are incredibly complex for an edited reality show. Mike is a tragic character that is in denial about how he sacrifices his personal values until a realizes what he did at the end. Maryanne has a coming of age story that needs to learn to be yourself in order to succeed. Look at the parallels in the way she responds to Jeff addressing her in the premiere and before the FIC to see her growth.
The downfall of Vati was fun and even hinted at with Jenny talking about the fracture of the tribe. Rocks and Tori’s rivalry was hilarious and it seems fitting that neither could come out on top with neither voting the other out. The Jonathan/Lindsay rivalry was also a compelling part of the late game. Romeo “freeing” himself and being a queen maker at the end was heartwarming, too.
There were so many character driven stories that I probably missed, but that’s why I loved this season so much (probably in my top 10)

Yeah, I was definitely surprised by how much I liked this season in the end. I think having such a fantastic cast really drove it towards the top of my tier list as well; it wasn't a one man show, the vast majority of the cast had interesting story lines, to the point I had multiple people I was rooting for to win as opposed to being all in on one player.

Fully agree, I like that the players can’t try to rewrite their journey but it’s just jarring and weird when it’s literally minutes after the season ends. Though I do think we miss something with the cast not having seen the season, there’s not really a point to having players talk about events that they haven’t even seen yet.

after the meh 41 was I wasn't expecting 42 to be much better with it being the sister season, but this cast. The cast made the best of basically everything that was sent there way. Plus I think the editors learned from 41 of focusing too much on stuff that at the end of the day didn't matter.
Also it was nice to see the winner before the merge hit.

  • @Julia-gj5yt

The hill I will absolutely die on is that the no rice "twist" is bad. It's just bad. Even with rice the players will be hungry, but giving them nothing and then having sparse food rewards means that they have much lower energy -- physically and mentally. It's kind of sad to watch and also...not as interesting? From what I've seen over the last two seasons, it seems like this extreme hunger leads to a lot of paranoia, anger, and petty conflict, which doesn't necessarily equate to good TV. There is enough interesting conflict when players have a base level of food. It feels similar to many of the other new twists in that the producers are trying to create grounds for conflict or interesting TV when, if they just let the players do what they've been doing for 40 seasons (with of course adjustments and gradual new twists from time to time) the show is always going to be good. People are just that interesting anyway.

You touch on it a lot given the similarities to 41, but we've talked about how this season is really made by the cast and the editing. My wife actually suggested that the editors were doing an experiment of their own, seeing what style of edit people responded best to, while trying to keep the seasons as samey as possible!
As far as the Beware advantages go, I LOVE the idea, they just need more ways of triggering them than saying a weird phrase. I loved the "have to reach into a tube of red paint", and am thinking about past advantages that involved sneaking out in the middle of the night... that sort of thing!

Drea and Jonathan coming too a head but then finding a bit of understanding during that one tribal was one of the better “outside the game” moments, simply because it showed both sides (implicit bias vs calling someone a racist) and resolved that misunderstanding, and then both players were able to move forward with respect and love to each other. I enjoyed that much more than the repeated LONG conversations that place during 41, especially because we didn’t get to see both sides of the coin there. The rest of the review really matched my feelings on the season, this was one of the better “new age” seasons so far.

Now they mostly swim out and get puzzle pieces and put puzzles together then go eat rewards that are fit for a king and talk about social issues in their lives etc. There are too many immunity idol's. the best way to compare 41 and 42 is the way the POC problem happens.
no offence to Shan, i speak as a Shan fan, but a black alliance pissed me off, it was taking a factor outside of the game and putting it in and making it your dominant alliance. It was a strategical decision on her part to create it.
In 42 however, Drea and Maryannes moment when they both played the idol was not a strategic game plan, atleast, not completely. They noticed a trend, and decided to stop the trend. The way it was handled was phenomenal, them using it to make sure it couldn’t be seen a strategic decision, cause they could’ve played the others to make them feel guilty and vote Tori. But they idolled her out.
41 forces this darker tone as this was someone’s integral strategy (love you shan, but it’s true), while 42 acknowledges what happens, and let’s the season continue.
I hope this makes sense, sorry if it doesn’t :)

I have watched them all as they aired and while I prefer the 39 day model, this was an excellent season despite some of the sillier twists. I love this cast; they were group of people who loved the game, recognized what a privilege just getting to play it truly is and who left everything on the field. It was joyful. Every boot left with class or great humour. That final tribal was sensational; watching the jury realize that their perceptions of Maryanne were way off was delightful. Mike might have won if he'd risen to the challenge and owned his game as I truly don't think this jury had decided before FTC but it would have been an uphill fight as Maryanne came prepared.
I am sure we are going to see some of this cast again; Jonathon, Lindsay, Mike, Omar, Drea, possibly Tori (her facial expressions at every TC had me in stitches) and from the pre-merge, maybe Jenny.

This was one of my favorite Final Tribal Councils ever, since every jury member was respectful to the each of the Final 3. This is especially surprising, since Romeo looked like the typical Final 3 member that gets ridiculed and mocked by a person that couldn't even get that far (or maybe it was because there truly was no obvious winner out of any of the Final 3, so the jury could be completely unbiased).

TL;DR: 42 is fantastic, and it's now my (personal! opinion!) seventh favorite season of all time.
I don't think this is even recency bias speaking given that I've just recently rewatched a lot of my upper-half seasons, but 42 is solidly in my Top 10. I currently have it at #7 out of 42 seasons, and it's for all the reasons you've stated.
Excellent editing from start to finish, less drivel from explanation purgatory on all the new advantages and twists, and a cast that played ruthlessly, messily, yet all with a smile on their face at the end of the day, and they all seem very close in real life. As you said, the cast makes the season, and I felt it most especially with this quirky, imperfect, yet gutsy group of strangers.
Maryanne, for me, is an all-time winner in terms of sheer personality and character. Regardless of what you'll say about her gameplay - which is, quite good enough, and if she makes it to FTC, I don't doubt she can win against most people - you can't deny that her being this loud, boisterous, weird, and unabashedly enthusiastic superfan is a winner we'll remember for a long while. I love her so much, and I really believe she still has untapped potential for a return. She's so unique and unlike any other player or past winner, and I think Maryanne is understandably the star and the light, happy-go-lucky thread that keeps this season together.
The endgame, while predictable in some aspects - especially with the big threat stretch all cannibalizing each other from 8th to 5th, was still entertaining to watch. And why was it entertaining to watch? BECAUSE WE ACTUALLY KNOW THESE PEOPLE! Something 42 did correctly that I feel 41 was done dirty on was the editing. 41 was the Shan Show, and nobody's going to argue that, but it's unfortunate that it was because 41's cast is also quite strong. 42 wasn't just the Maryanne Show, or the Omar show, or the Drea show. It felt like an ensemble cast that we got to watch target each other and fumbling secrets along the way. The whole season was, like you said, FUN. It was light, it was cheery, and even in its darker, more serious moments, I paid attention and truly CARED about these people. Your entire montage of underrated funny moments had me CACKLING from start to finish, and that's how I feel about this season.
People will disagree, but I truly think that 42 is one that'll age like fine wine. Just the right amount of production tomfoolery (even if it understandably angers us), with a well-balanced edit that showcased every positive - and negative! - quirk of most of its cast. I loved this season from start to finish, and I'm afraid now that I have insane expectations for the players (and the editors) going into 43.

Wish challenges would be edited as well and looking forward to seeing possibly Omar and Drea in future seasons as I thought they were the best players who went out for being too strong.

I personally believe I would rank season 42 either 10 or 11. Tocanchins is such a great old school season the the heart of Survivor's Golden Age of seasons so it's hard to take them out of the top ten. However I feel this cast is so well balanced I wouldn't be upset if it snuck into the top 10.

Maryanne didn't win at the final tribal necessarily. I think a very under-talked about theme of this season was race. There was that crazy tribal where her and drea sort of bonded or whatever the hell happened there. It was then never talked about again and then she won in a landslide when mike was the clear editing frontrunner. Hate to say it, but she was always going to win after that tribal. The cast was among the most diverse casts they've ever had, possibly the most diverse (i cant think of more representation of various races/ sexualities and cultures) and mike winning this season just wasn't going to happen. He bumbled final-tribal somewhat but not enough to go from frontrunner to losing in a landslide whatsoever imo. Could be wrong about that.
This season is for sure a top 10 imo. Only things that werent at least very good to me were some of the new twists and stuff they kind of have to introduce 42 seasons in. I never blame someone for trying something new (at least too much) and if those are the only downsides of a season? Gotta be one of the best. I also think they had 10 characters that could easily be brought back and shine, with the normal number being like... MAYBE 4.

I though this season was pretty fun. The only thing that I would change is the ships wheel island, I found it a bit annoying and just kind of unnecessary, I thought something like the amulet was cooler. The other thing was the shot in the dark was completely unnecessary to me because really it had no affect on any gameplay that happened. The last thing is the hourglass twist, it was annoying, unnecessary, and pointless. The do or die twist to me was just kind of meh. The complete luck aspect was annoying, but what I found annoying is that they got out if they lose.
Maryanne grew on me a lot this season. I started off thinking she was annoying and a crybaby, but as the season went on, she seemed to grow into her own character and really made out to be a fantastic person. I was rooting for her in the finals! I was super disappointed with this seasons final 3 because I completely hated Mike this whole season, (I’ll explain why later), Romeo was kind of a joke, and Maryanne was the only one there that seemed like she had a remote chance of winning. Mike came into final tribal seeming like he was going to win, but about half way through the final tribal I knew he had basically no shot. Maryanne gave an outstanding jury performance that was 100% deserving of 1,000,000. I was disappointed. I really wanted Lindsay in the final 3!
Onto Mike, to me he was my least favorite player on this season. He kept saying “I am all about trust and honesty” and then lied to like 80 people. He was way to gullible and anytime he heard anyone say that someone was coming for him, (even if it was a lie), he immediately believed it. AND, he held grudges for WAY to long. He would always say “you voted for me once”, even if it was maybe 6 trial councils ago. Like, GET OVER IT BUDDY.
All in all, I would say that this season wasn’t a total disaster. It had its good moments and it’s bad moments, but ultimately it was a pretty decent season.
THIS IS ALL MY OPINION, DONT HATE ON ME FOR THIS PLEASE! EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE OPINIONS!

This was easily the most equitable and balanced editing of a season especially after season 41 when so many unnecessary editing choices were made such as episode 3 as a whole, if they can easily edit out the nullifier from 42 why couldn't they edit out the sydney/brad/tiffany shipwheel trip which amounted to nothing? I'm glad they dropped the whole "hardest season" narrative too. The editing of 42 is what 41 should have been.
42 is a better season to show to casual or newer fans as its easier to understand whereas the gameplay of 41 was very complex and did not translate well into the edit, a lot of dyanmics were not fully explained such as why Liana and Xander didn't get a long (it was because he ostracized her) or just Luvu in general, specifically Erika's win was extremely ripped off in the edit which sucks.
Personally, despite the horrible editing of 41 I still liked it more but, this is coming from someone who likes seasons with darkness and negativity like 30 or 23. I don't really enjoy the kumbaya aspect especially when people like Hai and Drea were actually extremely bitter at Omar on ponderosa which we didn't get to see. I still think both seasons are better for me than all of the fiji era aside 37! Great video.

  • @kevinlohmann3185
    @kevinlohmann3185 Pƙed 2 lety +4

I think 41 got such an imbalanced edit because every single twist in the game was brand new AND extremely complicated AND most of them happened at Ua and Yase, so the editors needed to show the audience lengthy scenes of all that being explained, unfortunately leading to Luvu getting barely any screen time pre-merge. But for 42, the audience was already familiar with the beware idols, ship wheel island, shot in the dark, do or die, the hourglass, the punishments for losing, all of that. So we got to see more of the relationships and the stuff that actually makes the show what we love. I firmly believe that if you swapped the order in which these seasons aired, meaning the editors would have to edit them differently, we'd be having the same conversation where an alternative universe 41 was kinda rough while alternate universe 42 was pretty dang good. For me, it's the production's fault for being insecure about the shortened game so they threw way too many new twists into the season.

Idk, they didn’t really need to spend so much energy on it tbh. They could’ve f.e. cut the ep 3 shipwheel island and nothing would’ve been lost and explanations of the advantages could’ve been significantly shortened. Trust your audience, they would’ve gotten the idea of each twist with like three lines of dialogue. Or, ykno, don’t bite off more than you can chew.

The only twists that could be interesting moving forward are Shipwheel Island, for its interesting dilemma and impact on the players involved, and the amulets, for the interesting strategy and social dynamic it creates. The beware advantages have annoying phrases that even the players don't want to say over and over again. The steal idol/advantage Knowledge is Power just should not be a thing, since it opens the door for either hackable characters getting idols from likeable ones or, as of right now, does nothing. Do or die just does not work for a show like survivor that encourages social bonds and manipulation to win. The hourglass is an absolute waste of television time which should be switched to half the tribe winning and the winners deciding to take a couple people with them and the rest go to exile. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

I realize this is an old video now, but:
Honestly the fact that there were advantages we didn't even see, to me just confirms there are WAY too many advantages/rules/twists and whatever in the new era (41 and 42 specifically), the unbalanced editing (ex. we didn't even know Heather existed for way too much of 41), and the need for 90 min episodes. Both seasons had incredible casts!
I think they're slowly learning, as evidenced by 45 (I think 43 still had some very unbalanced editing), which to me had the best editing of new era so far - we got to see camp life, challenges, actual strategy and relationships from many different people - and the glorious 90 min episodes in which to allow them to do that. 👌 I feel like I really knew the majority of the cast, not just the "big" players/personalities. I do also wish we could go back to 39 days, but I know there's budget cuts and stuff.
And I don't mind the reunion being in Fiji, BUT I *EXTREMELY* want the final 3 to get some food and sleep first. Do the reunion in Ponderosa the next day, even. Give them a minute - it'll still be "raw" and "fresh" but at least they'll be able to process it for a second, and be clean and fed!!

I see your point about the do or die but I disagree about “people getting their torch snuffed due to randomness”. Although it is a 2/3 chance you’re going home, it’s not random if you CHOOSE to partake in the challenge, and you know that you just can’t be the FIRST one eliminated from the challenge. It leaves the situation up to interpretation for the players, and it comes down to making the right call for your game. If you don’t need immunity don’t even try, If there’s a challenge beast on your season like Jonathan don’t risk it, if you’re on the bottom go for it, if you think a lot of people are sitting out and you want a 1/2 shot at immunity and have confidence in the challenge go for it. It just comes down to how a player decided to approach the twist. It’s a huge gamble and I think it works pretty well. Although i kinda wish it was a 50/50. 33% change at survival seems a little much

The thing I enjoy about the fiji reunion is that we don't have to hear from the audience, children , or a past castaway (probable Boston Rob) and we can really just focus on the people that played the season. I do wish they brought the pre-merge players back.
Also I hat the fact that they have to "earn the merge" so ridiculous. The fact that they made the merge and then just through that away.
The thing I did like is they didn't do the twist tribal councils back to back like in 41 but I wish they could make the season like 3 days longer so we don't get a double bot in the first episode because I am not opposed to it after the merge as long as they are properly separated and aren't back to back
I hope that them completely editing out the idol nulifer tell them that they don't need to throw every single advantage in a game to have an amazing season. Speaking of advantages it took like 10 tries for the extra vote to actually be used and do something. If it takes that many tries for something to work how they intended then it wasn't a good advantage.

Your thoughts are pretty much mine. This season is top-tier for me, probably just above "David vs. Goliath". Probably the best season we've had since that aired, and from a personal enjoyment level, haven't had a season I've loved so much since the Cambodia/Kaoh Rong 1-2 punch.
That said, I do feel a bit bad for 41. As you mention, I think that season kind of got screwed by needing to have all the rules explanations, thus eating up show time and making it harder to connect with the case, since the twists and how they work were much more of the focus. May also partially account for the uneven editing of that season.

With season 42 however the end game was one of my favourites, It was a great finale and the last 2 episodes before the finale were so good. The merge was great also, I think season 42 definitely benefitted from being aired after s41 as I believe the editing was a direct result of the response to 41. It was the one thing they could change and you can clearly see the difference.

Hi Peridiam! Have you played survivor orgs before? Just curious cause I'm sure a lot of the fans would like to spec your game one day. 😅

Despite some twists and gimmicks falling flat or amounting to nothing, this is one of the best modern seasons on the strength of the cast alone. I’ll never stop appreciating their joy and lack of bitterness in all the final boots. There was respect and camaraderie. Omar and Mike could have easily won any other season. It’s rare to have so many great social strategists in the same place
but Maryann nailing final tribal was a beautiful thing.
