  • (9 Dec 1978) President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania speaks to group of party and government officials, on Independence Day, commenting that the Tanzanian army has pushed the Ugandan army out of the country and is completing its clean-up operations in the Kagera Salient, the area occupied by Ugandan troops a month ago. In his address to the Tanzanian people, he emphasised that the end of the Ugandan invasion did not solve the problem and that Tanzania would now be forced to cut back on its own development programs as a result of the cost of the Tanzanian counter-offensive. He concluded by telling envoys to emphasise three things: condemnation of Ugandan agression, claims for compensation from Uganda and demands for Uganda to promise to renounce all claims to Tanzanian territory.
