    I have been watching this young woman for a year or so and absolutely admire her skill, presentation, and personality. I have been doing this for 60 years and come from a different tradition; northern Nevada and eastern Idaho, and while I do some things a little differently, I learn things from her approach. I am more of a Pat and Deb Puckett kind of guy, without the roping, but these folks are all superb for my kind of riding and what I expect from the horses I am privileged to handle. I really admire Sam and enjoy seeing such accomplishment in a young trainer. She is to be commended for her grace and patience in her classy handling of the snarky, ill-considered comments made by some on this site. Keep it up young lady. You are a credit to the endeavor.

    So nice to see someone who has no bullshit training but is also gentle and kind to their horses. I’ve worked for so many people over the years that have well-behaved horses, but all of them have been made that way through learned helplessness. It’s so refreshing to see younger trainers with rules and boundaries for their horses, but enforce those rules with body language and training methods their horses understand. Very very invested in this series, great job and keep up the good work!!

    I appreciate how you narrate when and why you're applying pressure as well as clarified that the markings are just dust :) I think sometimes people will leave stuff like that out then get overly defensive when their audience has reasonable concerns about what's happening. Your sensitivity towards your horses shows in their training and your sensitivity towards your audience shows in the comments section.

This is so important for all animal training. More content like this should be available and more people should treat animals like you do.

      Eric Keller you stumbled upon one of the best young talents in mustang training today! I AM a horse person with 45+ years experience, and I love watching Sam work with her mustangs- she has a precise and thoughtful method coupled with calm connection. Her channel shows her working with her previous Mustang project horses - they mostly are for the “Extreme Mustang Makover” program of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF). It’s a fascinating project, if you have the time I encourage you to check out the videos of the final show (like the one in Ft Worth last January) it is amazing what these trainers can accomplish with thoughtful training 100 days and a wild Mustang.

    I really appreciate preparing the horse to know the right answer for tying, and then letting her duke it out with the tying pole. That’s great if some people don’t ever actually hard-tie their horse. But you don’t know what home she’ll end up in(like you said) and how bad would it be if the first time they tie her to the trailer she flips out and hurts herself?? Not only that, but it prepares her to not flip out if she steps on her reins/get caught on something, and just maybe this preparation might come up in her mind and it might save her from hurting herself or worse someday

  • @juliagray207
    @juliagray207 Před 3 lety +2

    I really like how this mare is put together---nice shoulder! I think tying is such an important skill for a horse, especially in cases where you don't know where the horse will end up. Which lets face it, given how unpredictable life is could be any case with any horse. Not being able to tie quietly can set them up for some seriously bad experiences down the road. The barn owner at the place I board just got a patience pole like the one in your video! She ties her horses 20-30 mins after each ride/groundwork session which seems to work well for her. The horses associate it with a nice rest after they work and now they all are super quiet with it. I'll probably start doing the same with my greenie when she is ready.

    Sam, I really enjoyed watching this session and glad you mentioned in previous session that how a horse acts with you doesn’t mean that they would/will be the same with someone else....animals are just like people in that they just may not mesh with your personality style....nothing against either the horse or rider, just a fact. I shared this with a friend after he told me his daughter was taking riding lessons but she didn’t seem to get along with the horse so perhaps riding wasn’t for her after all...and when I told him that there is no guaranteed match with a horse and rider... and that perhaps she needed to try a different horse...he was so relieved because he felt his daughter was the reason they weren’t meshing...and I told him that I didn’t mesh with my third horse and didn’t have the time to work on that relationship...based on the timeline/goals I had as to where I needed to be...in order to be ready for upcoming competition....I needed a horse that was more mature and coming along more quickly.
    Perhaps the reason this horse was passed over a few times is because she was meant to work with you? It makes you wonder, that’s for sure :)
    Question, do you use voice commands as well...it was hard to hear with the wind...but in particular I was wondering when she was tied and pulling back if you just let her be completely pull back and let her figure it out, while watching from afar or do you holler out to her to “whoa” or “stop” or some kind of vocal cue to stop and chill?
    Thanks for sharing your journey....you are an excellent trainer and I think she is going to make someone a good horse!

    • @SamVanFleet
      @SamVanFleet  Před 3 lety

      Hey! I do use vocal cues. But on day 3, she won’t know what those mean when she’s in a stressful situation. The best way for one that’s resistant to pressure, after you’ve prepared them, is to keep your distance and let them figure it out. A vocal cue wouldn’t have helped her at this stage

    Lovely job. In the 70's I bought a bay mare from a trainer in OR. He said he caught her wild. She was a mustang, I'm sure. She was pretty green but we got along. Wish I'd known more then. She was so much like this mare you're training now.

      I agree 100 percent. My mare had tying issues when I got her because her whole life, the moment she was upset, her owners untied her immediately. One day with a sturdy tree and she's 99% trustworthy on it now. It wasn't pretty, but it's better than her breaking a halter in the future and getting loose near a road or something 🤷

    For the people who think she's being too tough on the horse; this horse is HEAVY, and it seems to want to crawl in her lap rather than walk away from her when it gets spooked or confused. Which, essentially, is a good thing because the horse feels safe with her, but it can be a safety hazard. Horses are around 500-700 kg so for that to jump on your neck is not a pleasant experience.

    • @martaborkowska8168
      @martaborkowska8168 Před 3 lety

      I think I do not agree with this statement. With a whip, maybe you want be able to hit as hard (won't break bones) but you can easily cut the skin and make the horse bleed (I saw a girl 10yo who wiped her horse so hard that she made it bleed, awful sight). But Sam is using her whip as a guide and not as a penalty, so I wouldn't be concerned about it watching her videos anyway :) but it is true that we shouldn't really think about horses the same way we think about people (and that's what I think you meant) , they can't speak so we need to comunícate with them differently and sometimes it means to give a slap/push when the horse is starting to walk over you or becoming dangerous.

      For the tying? The rope... not sure honestly! Just the one that was on the post. I work her in a Double Dan colt starting rope. The nylon halter is just a plain old brand, and the rope halters I work in are Counter Canter Designs, Knotty Girls, Moore Horsemanship’s, or Double Dan’s

    When the horse is so pushy you gotta be safe and make yourself some room, so you shouldn't have to defend yourself on using a whip. Better safe than run over by a horse.

      Cheyenne Johnson shes saying she shouldn’t have to defend herself for using a whip to make room between her and the horse and that it’s better to be safe than sorry. Hope that helped a little bit!

    how do you teach your horses to lead? Someone dropped off an untouched yearling and were in the process of halter breaking but any pressure on the halter or lead and he goes crazy!

    • @estherbartholdy
      @estherbartholdy Před 3 lety +4

      Put on a normal halter and leave a lead rope dangling from it, long enough that he steps on it. He will learn that he has to release the pressure himself. After two or three days you will be able to start leading him.

    • @paytonsmitley7657
      @paytonsmitley7657 Před 3 lety

      Work with him. Get him comfortable with his head being touched and handled. Once he is ok with that lay the halter across his nose and poll. Let him get used to the feeling and show him it's not gonna hurt him. Then once he is ok with that slowly start putting it over his head. Do it slowly and let him see it's a not threat. That what I would do. Most people would just grab them and tie them and put it on but personally I'd rather let them accept it rather than forcing it.
