  • *****IMPORTANT***** It was brought to my attention that an ad for a fake service dog registry is preceding this video. I do NOT agree with these registries. Unfortunately, to my current knowledge, I am unable to restrict what companies want to put on my videos. I do NOT support these websites at all.
    Here’s our morning routine! I purposely picked later classes so I can be sure to get enough sleep as the semester chugs on. And NO I seriously did not even realize we matched until my friend pointed it out at lunch (lol). Hope you enjoy!

    I love your channel and following your journey, and I won't unsubscribe by all means, but I do have to say I strongly disagree with you using a shock collar on him.. I mean 1st off if he is ready to be living and attending college with you, he should be passed the phase of needing to get shocked.. Every Service dog makes mistakes, just as humans do, but if you still need to shock your dog for them then he is defiantly not ready to be at a college.. And I have a 60 pound standard Goldendoodle, and doodles are very sensitive dogs. When he was little when I even told him to go to his mat for a time out because he did something wrong (And as u know doodles are so smart, so he defiantly knew why he was being sent there) But he would litterly stress pee on the kichen floor. He was completely potty trained in 2 days, but it was how he showed emotion was he couldn't hold his bladder. At first we thought he was "paying us back" but after talking to the vet about it she is the one that told us doodles where very sensitive and it's not uncommon for them to pee when excited or stressed. She said that doodles take things personally and want to please. So I had to change my whole demeanor on how I handled and talked to him. Now that he's older he obviously doesn't do that anymore, and I will send him to his mat but when I do it's in a happy tone and he knows it's just to give him a break. But out in Puplic I NEVER "Punish" him. I want him to view working as fun and not that he'll get in trouble. He does wear the Halti because it's what I trained him in. He is used to it since he has worked in it since 6 months. (He's 2) but if he get's distracted or something I use commands such as "Watch me" and sometimes treats (Basically the Hlati is not used to punish him in anyway) But it's positive methods and not to hurt or make him feel uncomfortable. And because I have trained like that, he does things because he wants to please me. Not because he is afraid of getting hurt, startled, or anything else. He does it for me. And yes sometimes when he's working on a new task or just because he's being good, I'll pass down a treat or 2. But he get's a lot of praise. Shock collars are like putting on a band aid. It doesn't train them not to do a behavior but rather if they do they get hurt/uncomfortable. But no matter how people want to train, shock collars, vibration collars, positive methods, etc, at least by the time you except them to go live and be in college with you they shouldn't need to be corrected as much nor have a reason to shock or punish them as often if at all. Again all SD's make mistakes but if your dog still makes them often enough u have to put a shock collar on, honestly your dog shouldn't be there. Because if your dog doesn't make hardly any mistakes u wouldn't need to put it on him anymore. All dogs make mistakes like humans, but it doesn't mean they deserve to be shocked at every little or big mistake. That's like if you told a child not to cuss. So you put a vibration or shock collar on them. Sure the cussing may stop eventually but only because of fear. Not because they want to make you happy. And guess what? Once the collar comes off, a few weeks later they would realize it and start cussing again. And as you know, doodles are insanely smart. They do figure stuff like that out. But eaither way, if he is still training and makes frequent mistakes that theres a need to even consider putting a shock collar on him, he defiantly shouldn't be expected to be at a college living and working. My dog just turned 2. He is just now ready for me to go back to college. By next trimester or maybe even the next, I am going to go back with him. (I'm going to start this week taking him to campus and have lunch and stuff there so he can get used to being in a school setting the next few or so months) But he's ready. makes hardly any mistakes and knows about half his tasks (Which the other ones he can still train and learn, they aren't the most important at the moment) but if your dog still makes enough mistakes for a shock collar, he shouldn't be there. Again, I love your channel besides this thing. And I just felt the need to say it. If a dog is ready and capable of being in a stressful environment (Like living and being at a school) then they should be way passed needing any harsh correctors. A simple command or refocus should do the trick.

    • @magsdoesnotknow
      @magsdoesnotknow Před 5 lety +1

      A shock collar can be used as a harsh corrector, but it can also be dialed WAY down to the point where it is no more stimulating to the dog than a gentle leash tension. It can be used to punish, but it can also be used as a gentle "try something different" or basically a tap on the shoulder to get attention back on the handler. When being used on low settings, it's more easy for the dog to understand than saying no (think the way that a clicker is easier for a dog to understand than saying yes). It also eliminates the need for a verbal or visible correction that can make people watching the handler judgemental. It's just a tool, it can be used to harm but it can alternatively be used as a very effective and covert communication tool, that aids the disabled handler and doesn't harm the dog.

    • @OfficiallyLydiasLife
      @OfficiallyLydiasLife Před 5 lety +2

      well it still makes a dog uncomfortable. And again, if her dog is ready to be in a college environment then no matter what his behavior should be such he doesn't need it. If it's to get the dog to pay attention to her, then the dog should already have that pretty much all the way down that with a simple command like "Watch me" the dog does. And when reading about shock collars, you learn the dog can actually take the shock (or vibration, whatever u want to claim) diffrent then what it was intended for. Just like with clicker training, if you don't click at the right exact moment, the dog can mean he got reworded for something else. However, it doesn't matter because it doesn't instill fears. And you only click when the dogs doing what is asked of him. Like watch u when u command. With shock collars often times the dog indicates it as something else. Example if kids where outside and a dog started barking at them, so the owner shocked to say "No" instead of the dog understanding it was for his behavior of barking, he can learn or think it was that he saw kids. So it can cause the dog to become fearful that every time they see kids they get shocked. (Which can lead to aggression if the dog remains the fears) Even with a clicker you give the command such as "Watch me" and when you do you click so it's on the moment they followed through. With a shock collar it's not like that at all. Its like "you where bad, now I'm gonna shock you".. Another example if you did give a command such as "Watch me" but the dog kept ignoring you and looked at the children (In this example no barking just not minding the command) then when you shock because they where "bad" it again, causes fears thinking kids, other dogs, cats, people, trees, whatever is scary because they get hurt/uncomfortable when they see them. But again, no matter what you want to argue on how shock collars are used, if her dog is really ready to be at a college, he should not need to wear a shock collar anymore. By that point the dog should be so well behave, it would be no use putting a shock collar on him because with a command the dog is obedient and minds making no use to shock him. Even when I go back to college, it will be 1 class. I also am not going to stay and live there. Now my dogs ready to attend 1 2 hour class with me. He is very well behaved. But if I expected something as stressful as multiple classes and actually living on campus, I would make sure without a doubt my dog was ready for a pretty stressful environment. And part of that would be making sure he was very well with his impulse control and needed little to zero reminders. (Again, All SD's make mistakes, they are still living animals.. There was even a story a while back of a guide dog being told to go to a clothes store or something, and instead he lead the handler to the dogs favorite pet store. They are living animals) but it doesn't mean they should get shocked for being living animals. And If she needs to put on a shock collar, then her dog isn't ready to be at a college. Because if her dog was the best dog ever, payed attention, had great impulse, solid on tasks, and etc, then there would be absolutely no reason to put on a Shock collar. No matter what setting! And I know dogs and I have very much experience with doodles. I know if trained right doodles want to please and do well with verbal and non verbal (Hand signals) commands. So what, they do 1 shock for sit and 2 for down? I don't see any communication there except to punish and make a dog uncomfortable.

    • @OfficiallyLydiasLife
      @OfficiallyLydiasLife Před 5 lety +2

      See even in this video of humans trying it, it was painful and uncomfortable. Even on setting 1 u can see a jolt. Now imagine feeling that, everyday, multiple times a day, and not understanding why. And by level 3 it was already painful. If a shock collar isn't so bad, I would like to see a human put one on, and every time they shock the dog it shocks the human too. and this was just a level 1 shock, now if u felt that over and over again (like a in training dog or puppy for example where they are very much learning) then I imagine there neck would get sorer and sorer. Even on setting 1. There was times where I thought a shock collar would just be a quick fix and give me the results I wanted. However because of my beliefs I mustered through training. And my dogs a better and happier dog because of it. He knows whats expected of him and not scared I'm going to hurt him here's that video: czcams.com/video/DDWk_EW7mrg/video.html There has even been STUDIES and evidence that Shock collars are bad no matter what setting. Here's another study. Idk if you want to read this whole website at it's a lot, so I'll just quote 1 of the paragraphs. But I'll link the site as it covers all forms of shocking pets from communication like u claim, and punishment. This is the shortest paragraph study So I'll just use it. Here. But there is a ton more on this link if u want to read more. "A study published in 20001 looked at five dogs who were subjected to shock collar containment systems and who later bit people, resulting in a law suit. No dog had a prior history of displaying aggression towards people and it is believed that the dogs received a shock at the time of the attack. There is no evidence to suggest that the humans bitten were acting in a threatening manner prior to the attack. In all cases, the dogs bit the victim repeatedly and uninhibitedly, resulting in serious bodily injury. Other studies on the use of electrical shock on other species, including humans, have noted the extreme viciousness and intensity of shock-elicited aggression." And here's the links. They have a lot of facts, studies and proof along with personal experiences and cases. And to shock a SD, who is expected to SAVE OUR LIVES is just sickening to me. I couldn't even shock my dog if I really wanted to (even on level 1, wait I couldn't even put in on his neck at all) because I love him in such away it would make me sick to my stomach and I would end up crying my eyes out. That's love. Not wanting to make my dog feel uncomfortable for my own needs and wants. Link www.greenacreskennel.com/dog-behavior-and-training/the-unintended-consequences-of-shock-collars.html

      Ohhh please educate yourself. You realise that haltis cause discomfort too right? Probably more than an e-collar does, because you can’t control when you apply pressure with the halti.
