Sooo.. in light of Duckies unfortunate story. Yesterday I finally decided to go buy a herd of sweet adorable baby piggies! 4 in total (plus we have my girlfriends two 2 year old boys we've had)and I spoiled them with so many goodies to start them off with(cage/playground/accessories, food).
In honor of precious Duckie, I have named one of my sweet piggies after him! She was so nervous and shy at first, actually the most passive and calm in the store, but once she was home and free with her new sisters she was the most energetic of the pack and asserted herself amongst the top of the herd. It brought joy to me thinking she was running laps for precious Duckie. It was so neat seeing her figure out the ramp between the cage and playground first, running tons of laps afterwards and popcorning all over the place.(need to send a pic of little Duckie and her sisters somehow!)
I'm so sorry Saskia, I know the loss of such a innocent loved one can be the hardest after putting so much effort in hoping for a brighter outcome. I am someone who can't even hear bad news without it putting me down and watching this was heartbreaking. I hope you know Duckie is watching over all his brothers and sister and even lives on through my new baby herd. Thank you so much for everything you do Saskia. I wish we had a shelter such as yours near my small town.. the only thing available to us is a small store about 20 minutes out and most shelters anywhere near me are quite a distance aswell(that have Guinea pigs at that too!)We're all truly inspired and enlightened by you every time you bring us a new video and lesson. I feel like people don't realize how much Guinea pigs eat and aren't prepared for the cost. Others aren't aware that they need access to food 24/7 so they let the food go empty.
Little Duckie was so fortunate to have landed in your hands. Whatever life he had before, he knew what love and caring were in his final days. He is now without pain and without fear. This might sound cliched but in my twilight yrs I'm in love with piggies all over again 😊....
I had piggies as a child , "grew up" , lived my life , been around the block in ways most couldn't imagine .
Have a couple of piggies now and one of them is losing the use of her legs (all four) and I don't know what to do . I'm scared of losing her ...
They're such joy , beautiful little animals....

This is incredible to watch. I recently had my last girl pass away, due to old age, she had a long good life. Seeing this and hearing these sounds of all these happy Guinea pigs make me tear up. I would love to volunteer and help if I ever managed to get to California...thank you for helping Guinea pigs. They deserve all the love they receive ♡

If you actually know how to do that I have a disabled Guinea pig that could use it.
The hardest part is too see an animal eating because there is the will to live. Like my senior hamster would try to eat until the very end fighting to live.
And for a poor baby it is really heart breaking.
Crying now broke my heart little duckies. But he's at the Rainbow Bridge and feels better now. Still thank you for taking care of the piggies!
All the little piggies want to do is eat and play. They give so much joy. My soul cannot comphrehend violence to these sweet gentle beings. Enough is enough!! It's only because of you Saskia and your soul love that gives me hope for this old world. Thank you, Saskia.❤❤

I worry about that with my kids so i tell them the piggies are mine and they must be nice to my piggies. I also watch them like a hawk .. Luckily, thank god, my kids actually are listening.

This is one story among countless. Saskia does what she can. I'd highly recommend adopting an animal in need if you can. No one can do everything. But we all can do something.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but all of the people commenting and wishing Duckie well did not watch the video all the way through. It was unfortunately decided to euthanize him, as his health issues were far worse than originally thought. This is such a sad and heartbreaking story. Thank you Saskia for trying, you have a very big heart. Rest well little one.

At the sanctuary I am involved in we promote good quality of life but never prolong suffering.He was clearly suffering and you made the only decision possible for him.He spent his last hours on earth being loved and cared for in a way he had not known before.He died surrounded by love and kindness,not on his own without care and understanding.So glad he found his way to you even though it must have been heartbreaking for you.

My, no matter how much they eat, skinny pigs are just gorgeous. It's a shame they are illegal to keep on my area, otherwise I think you'd have another hoarding situation on your hands, Saskia! 😂 Poor little Duckie, I hope he's moved on to a better place, but you did everything you could for him.

I just rescued a baby boy that was apparently being bullied out of food, 8 weeks old all fluff and bones. Teeth overgrown from the lack of access to food 😩 coincidentally I named him Duck! He's the sweetest boy I've met. He wheeked at the sound of his food container for the first time today, it's the little things.
If I lived there I would be there everyday! I love piggies!
Unfortunately human beings are the absolute worst at “caring” for pets! I’m so happy to see you and your agency have him and showering him with love&concern. Bless you and baby Duckie💙💚

These little piggies know your voice! They are smarter than we give them credit! I had guinea pigs for years, for pets for my 9 kids. They are wonderful pets. Books did not tell all the info needed to keep them healthy. Like HAY!!!!! I got a female from a zoo that raised piggies for reptile food. She had a uterine infection which I traced through many resources ( before google) to find it SS a lack of hay feed. My kids learned love of animals through guinea pigs.

It was so heartbreaking when I saw Duckie. I was literally in tears for him..the poor little baby. I was heartbroken when I found out after that he had to be sent to baby guinea pig heaven. At least now he is not in pain anymore. Thank you Saskia for giving him all the food, love and attention that you could give him..he knew he was being loved and at least he took that feeling with him when he went. 😭

as heartbreaking as it is, i feel like there was no hope in little duckie moving ever again. if the muscles were deteriorated back there, i would guess he couldnt urinate or poop, right?
letting him go was the kindest option, but an awful one at that. how could his owners just let him become like that? and not help him? he was only a baby. how awful. i had some hope he would be able to at least drag himself, even moreso if he had little wheels, but if he just. was too lethargic to even scoot up to grab food.... ): the poor thing.

Anyone who is so cruel as to basically do nothing for any animal like this poor baby should rot for being heartless. ... I'll starve and go broke before I would let any of my animals go without a meal/water or even toys... People make me sick sometimes. ... I would do ANYTHING for my two Guinea Pigs, my three Hamsters, eight cats, and dog!!! They're my world, and I treat them just as good as I treat my daughter. .. They're my furbabies and they're family!!! They're much more than cute faces to look at... When I had to take my Teddybear Hamster Lincoln for his teeth trimming and when they were going over all my options and financial responsibilities I told them "you do whatever needs to be done to ensure my baby's health no matter the cost" because my Lincoln's health is far more important than a few saved dollars. ... I wish everyone cared about their pets the way I do... There's too many animals out there who are mistreated and neglected. .. Poor babies. ..

Its heartbreaking to see them so malnourished and sicky. They all deserve so much better. To anyone thinking of getting a pigett, please make sure you have the space, money and time for them. They will need all three to thrive.

Im going to venture a guess at one minute without watching the rest. I knew someone who adopted a child from a foriegn orphanage where they ran out of food to feed the infants, and this baby had lifeless legs because the body had shut them down for survival. Once proper feeding resumed the legs were fine. I hope this is the same thing and hes not paralyzed. Hope Im right! Well onto the video....
Sadly it is not. He was examined by a vet and euthanasia was offered as the best and kindest solution. It was not likely Duckie was ever going to walk again.

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Also I want to extend my respects to you and everyone there for taking on this mission; I would find it difficult to face the reality daily of the neglect and abuse cases, like Ducky, Nails, and I remember long ago a poor pig was dropped off after suffering heat stroke and died. Its a bit like working in a hospital, which I did in the past.

Duckie was smaller than my little baby munchkin when I got him 😥 I can’t believe someone wouldn’t check on their pets daily I take mine out everyday to check their ears nails crotches teeth and give them cuddles and when they’re on the floor with me and something spooks them they run back to me- they know I’ll keep them safe

I don’t mean to be morbid, so I beg your forgiveness if this comes across in that tone. What I took from this video is that working in any animal rescue is not always sunshine and laughter.
As wonderful and rewarding as it is a lot of the time, there are instances, like Duckie, where escorting them to the gates of the Rainbow Bridge is the kindest thing.
As terrible, difficult and heart wrenching a decision as it is, it allows the suffering to cease. It is a part of rescue work that I fear gets overlooked a lot of the time.
Thank You, all rescue workers for your efforts. Sadder stories would be more common place if not for you.
