Is 'Mr. Birchum' Rightwing Cringe?

  • When it comes to comedy, the ultimate question is simple: Does it make you laugh? In the case of "Mr. Birchum," the answer is a resounding yes. Its ability to make you laugh outweighs any minor flaws it may have, making them easy to overlook. Does it overly politicize in a world where everything seems to be entangled in politics?

This is not how DW should go about winning the “culture war”. In fact, the best approach is to not play into the culture war tactics and just make objectively good films and shows that have positive moral themes that most people can rally behind. In short… don’t be Hollywood! 😂

I couldn’t agree more. The reason South Park works is because the entire show isn’t just based on offending people. Nor do they make the entire focal point of the show going after “woke people.” It’s just a legitimately funny social satire. Nobody is off the table for being made fun of.

I think it’s because Mike Judge made it based on the people he grew up around. He never had an agenda to portray them in a particular way, he just represented them exactly as he experienced them. That’s what made it such a genuinely good show, it was a more realistic depiction of middle America. It wasn’t making fun of these people, it was pointing out what makes them so interesting & how their own experiences shape their world view. It never felt like it was trying to “shine a mirror” or correct behavior, it was more of a reasoned depiction of regular, everyday people.

The reason why Hank was such a lovable character was because even though he's a more conservative character, he genuinely cared about people regardless of his biases. His character never pandered to any one political standing. He wasn't trying to offend people, he was just a man doing his best.
Also, it was really strange that they tried to make Mr. Karponzi seem like a bad person for advocating against kidnapping and child labor. I'm pretty sure any parent, left or right wing, wouldn't want their child working construction for some dude they don't even know. 😅😂

They needed to separate the entertainment wing from the political part and create a new company under a new name, but that's not what they are doing. Lauren, yes, people still use pronouns, its not just a thing on Twitter. As a matter of fact, at work, many of the nurses and even doctors and providers have put their pronouns on their Microsoft Teams and Outlook profiles and on their email signatures. Furthermore, this takes place at federal facilities. Also, there are certain online game e-sports tournaments like Overwatch League, etc which have the commentators with their pronouns. I'm pretty sure whoever runs that esports venue makes them do it. Also, the fact that *some* people no longer use pronouns on the left does not mean that it should not still be a topic of constant ridicule. This nonsense needs to be laughed out of western societies. Other than that, I think there were good points made here. I agree that mainstream sit-coms and the like have made fun of the super woke aspects of the left and, as of late, it at least shows that the creators have *some* self-awareness, despite likely pushing leftist narratives or being a part of the overall leftist foundational power structures in Hollywood themselves (who also are guilty of pushing said narratives). I have a personal stake in wanting to see the Daily Wire win, being someone who has supported them since their inception, but the moves they have been making as of late are disappointing, this show being one of them. I didn't even know they originally had Candace cast in it which opens up another box of questions for another time.
Last point. This weird conversation has been occurring for a long time in, shall we say, "anti-woke" and non-leftist circles, regarding entertainment where otherwise level-headed commentators express frustration at entertainment having stories that are political or those stories which have some amount of social commentary. I think political themes used in stories are great and have no problem with that in and of itself, however, there is a delicate balance that must be taken into perspective when an artist chooses to write them into their stories. Typically where it starts to feel insufferable is where the content overtly panders to an audience or takes great strides to hammer a narrative home (except perhaps in the case of historical atrocities perhaps). Some of the best stories that I have seen, whether I have had some bias in the affirmative or negative of the narratives in the story, had themes which were made to appear ambiguous to the uninitiated viewer or at least handled the subject with the care of subtlety. Thus showing that the writers and creators had a respect for the intellect of its audiences.
It is refreshing to see good faith conservatives who are not grifters and showboaters critiquing other mainstream alternative conservative media outlets who are on our side. I hope some of the reactions to this show will help The Daily Wire consider more carefully the audience that they are making entertainment for, particularly since the audience that it was built on were Millennials and Generation Z.

Beyond that, It's also extremely safe in its aesthetics and interactions between the characters. It's actually trying to not "offend" or be edgy in any way, it's also overtly political when it should be more like South Park or the Simpsons, it needs to be more about American society in general, it needs to be fun and entertaining with compelling characters. It needs to have outrageous characters, not what they showed, nor a standard high school, it needs to take risks. So he gets suspended for three days without pay because he's in a union? I wanna be part of THAT union then!
A teacher out here got suspended for a week without pay because they breached policy. This policy was that teachers cannot post any identifying information about a current student or a student within the past couple years. What happened here was that a teacher took a picture of a raccoon they saw while grading papers at home (Unpaid work~) but if you zoomed in really close, you could lmake out that a piece of paper had something like "Jan", "Jen", or "Jon" and make out that was an assignment.
That alone was enough to be considered a breach of policy.

I feel like the only genuinely good show that the DW could bring up right now is their upcoming fantasy show the Pendragon Cycle. The whole art style and idea of an "adult animated show" like Mr. Birchum shouldn't be the kind of stuff they should be producing in the first place, because tackling politics and being edgy that's cringe in a way is not their forte to begin with.

Just saying "I know what that is" about politics doesn't have the same freshness.

I saw a little bias on this analysis Lauren, you are obviouslly not very happy with the DW nowadays and I think this coloured a little your judgment of this. Not defending it, to be honest I did not watched it and was not convinced by the publicity, but there are points on your argument that I find a little strange. For example, for good or for bad, being fair or unfair, Candence Owens was not fired from the DW because she was "canceled", she "said something people didn't like", as it happens on left wing companies. She was fired because she fought one of the company owners, Ben Shapiro. There were rumours of both of them having problems before the whole Israel x Palestine discussion, and with it's arrival this tension between them multiplied. Is Ben Shapiro right? I don't know, I am not aware of all that happened between them. Was her dismissal unfair? Again, no idea, I don't know what was on her contract with them and all that happened behind the cameras. Whas the "gag order" fair? In view of Ben Shapiro saying on the past that he is in favor of unconstrained debate, I find it hipocritical, no doubt, but again I don't know the exact terms of their request for the "gag order" or the reason they gave for it.
A lot of people sided with Candace on this, including you Lauren, what is perfectly acceptable and your right to do, and I like Candace too, I followed her chanels and videos way before she was hired by the DW, but it looks to me that we are forgetting, on this case, what we criticize the left of doing on several other cases: wait for the facts, to know exactly what happened and why.
Other point where I found a little bit of bias was on the criticism that the things treated on the animation were things that were not current issues, and to ilustrate that you cited the use of the term 'cringe', the use of "personal pronouns" and asking for forgiveness for being a white male. Those are not points of intense discussion nowadays? What are the safe spaces on colleges and schools? Are not spaces where people will not be "triggered", will not "cringe"? Do you know of any left wing topic with more "inflencers" than pronoums and other "trans topics" on Tik Tok? And is there any other group of people more vilanized nowadays than "white males"? Those look like current hot topics to me.
As I said, I did not watched the animation and do not intend to watch it, because the style of humour in it is not one that really makes me laugh (I never followed South Park, Family Guy, American Dad or The Simpsons for the same reason), and I fully agree with some of the points you made, I just think it would be a better analysis if you had taken a little more time to "filter out" your bias. Thank you anyways for the effort of watching those things and giving us the chance to have a better idea of what is what before we commit our time.

One final post and then I'm unsubscribing because I'm not in line with Lauren Chen's views anymore.
The online community is in danger of so much isolation within its own online community that they don't recognize but the majority of people out there see feel and think. Most people do not spend their time on CZcams Twitter Facebook and other social media platforms doing politics 24 hours a day. We do. That makes us insulated and isolated from what's going on in the rest of the world. The rest of the country isn't involved in our online community. They are aware of it but they're not living it. I see lots of examples of this. The whole Christ is King controversy is not taking place in rural America. It's not taking place at all. The whole Christian nationalism is taking over is not a subject that anybody's talking about in the real world. Just the online community. The whole dismissal of this show as so yesterday's humor is not happening out there especially in the older generations which still vote in massive numbers whether you like them or not. I find the online community to be isolated to be in their own bubble of opinions thoughts and ideas that don't match with the American people anymore. The American people are still seeing the effects of what started 10 years ago with a white hatred, the hatred of men, The favoritism of browns, the woke idiocy and yes how they're always triggered. You may think it's "yesterday's news" because you do it everyday but it's not for most people. It's still very relevant. I would urge people who use online communities as the basis for their opinions to realize you were in a bubble yourself. You may think the show is outdated it's so yesterday but it's not for all people. It's still very relevant.
    Get out of your bubbles.

Animation doesn't have to be childish and ugly to be for adults. Two, it's cringe. I know that without watching it. Comedy is extremely, extremely difficult to do well and for some reason DW keeps defaulting to that genre.

In this woke craze society we have now, I think it is a gold mine for comedic ideas. I am surprised Key and Peele isn't capitalizing on this. Some CZcamsrs and South Park are making content from it. Even watching the SNL skit of getting rid of Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima had me laughing because I too was wondering why the hell they were removed. Even the Wayne's could make a movie like Scary movie or Epic Movie using all the woke movies that bomb. I would be laughing if the little mermaid was beautiful from far away, but turns into a Samuel Jackson look alike booty warrior, with a red wig that is after the prince's cheeks.
