She is a wonderful versatile actor. From brilliant Margret Thatcher to an intense investigator to humorous situations. She needs to be celebrated more for her talent and intelligence

@@ironsideeve2955 UNfair. She went large, but then Thatcher went large. It just wouldn't work trying to playing Thatcher with subtle nuances. Also GA played Thatcher at the time she was PM, whereas Meryl Streep played her much later when her mind was really starting to leave her.
I'll leave it to you to decide which is the more difficult task, but I thought both performances were good, but in different ways.
Her Margaret Thatcher was abysmal
I did not like her Margret Thatcher. I dreaded every scene where I had to listen to that horrible, harsh accent.
@@HeatherHotcakes Yes, I'd agree, given Margaret's accent was forced fro the off - a perfect psycho school marm accent designed to tell you what was good for you and how you ought to 'just enjoy it - because it was what the country needed.' I'd say Gillian thought for a moment or two before accepting this role. Although some are revising their opinion, among the hard left in the UK, Margaret Thatcher is generally with the same level of disdain as a serial killer. What she killed was an entire way of life among the Northern pit towns and most of then never recovered their sense of community with many torn apart by industrial strife and resultant poverty. When she died it was widely reported that many people had a very long celebratory drink. She commands a level of opprobrium afforded to very very few leaders indeed, unless you include the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot! Whatever one thinks of Anderson's portrayal, I'm pretty sure she would not want the role to 'follow her around'. Fortunately GA has an impressive body of work to ensure she's far more likely to be remembered as Scully. Small mercy there.
I was obsessed with The X-files back when it first aired. I sent a letter to Gillian in 1995 along with a gift for baby Piper. I got i personalised signed photo of her in return, love you Gillian.

Seem to recall that her accent just swings between the two depending on where she is. It isn't deliberate.

Both are natural to her. Sort of like someone who speaks two languages. She uses the American one when in America and the British one in Europe.

@@davemiller6055 I find it to be very off-putting. She's playing apart on both sides of the Atlantic. She sounds so affected and intentionally posh when using the British accent. Lauren Cohan does the same.
@@hfhifi6878 Both accents are natural to her because of how she grew up. She uses the one that matches where she is. No different than someone who is bi-lingual using a different language depending on what country they are in.
@@davemiller6055 i disagree. I think its very disingenuous. I know she does a lot of British parts but the fact that she speaks “American” in her US interviews is kind of insulting and condescending to her fan base on both sides of the pond…IMHO

@@redelfshotthefood8213 the sexual tension was palpable and the balance of supernatural and science back in the nineties was so engaging especially prior to Y2K, I was also into millennium and there was a cross over episode between the two shows, brains became sexy, brilliant series, lightning in bottle xx

Alot of people dont realise what a brilliant actress Gillian is because she plays the part so well people think she is scully so that's why their shocked when they see her and realise shes the totally opposite to her character shes amazing in everything she does

To be fair, the bigger name actor normally gets more on any production.
However for this show, those two are definitely a package deal, so should be paid the same. Couldn't do the show with one of them missing

It's twofold: how big your name is (as with everything) and how good you or your managing team can negotiate. If you're not going to protest to being paid less, you're obviously getting paid less. It's a business, not a charity.
People pull the "that's discrimination" card too eagerly. She herself even explains why she was paid less in the beginning (3:40)
@B Brunnin behave yourself. She's done basically nothing outside the x files. David has done major Hollywood movies and been paid £225k per episode for californication. His net worth is twice hers. He's more famous. Up until this interview she did Bullshit on the BBC.

She was born in Chicago, but spent a good chunk of her childhood in London. She spent her adulthood switching between U.S. and U.K. residences, but moved to the U.K. permanently in 2003. So, the shifting accent is also explained by that.

Wow! I didn’t know she was a mom! She is absolutely flawless, especially as a mother. I’ll always miss the X-Files. I feel blessed to have grown up watching it. I will say though, besides the two lead actors. A.D. Skinner was always my favorite character.
She always goes into her London accent, when she’s here. I really like that fact.

U think its about right. She's not even half as successful as he is, just look at their net worth and catalogue of work. He's definitely worth twice what she is. They probably caved because they couldn't make it without her. Which probably explains the lack of budget to make that last season any good

Ian David Duchovny is solid in his own right but on what planet is he more than twice as successful as an actor than she is? Californication was a hit but it hardly put him in some stratosphere above her. He’s still Mulder to most people. Gillian has been very successful post XFiles and has the added plus of having established herself as a talent with impressive versatility above and beyond her Scully role and has achieved success on stage as well. David has his charms but he’s not exactly considered a great actor nor did he become an A-List movie star. He can be quite dull and has little versatility and I can’t imagine him killing it Off-Broadway or the West End. She’s also got Emmy wins and he’s got none. What any of these actors are “worth” is subjective but it’s not like Duchovny exists in a hugely higher level of success than her. Whats so great about his “catalogue of work” compared to hers? It’s certainly not obvious when scanning their IMDB profiles. Maybe you just really liked that reboot of “The Craft” he did with its 4.5 rating out of 10 while Gillian won her Emmy for The Crown.

I never understood why people make it a big deal that there was tension between her and David. With any acting gig, there does come a point where u just get sick of the other person. Doesn't mean u hate them or no longer like them, but you need a break. Obviously her and David are really good friends. I've done theater productions that wouldn't even go on nearly as long where people I would consider my family I would get annoyed with them. It happens.
Me neither. Anyone with a sibling, roommate, or coworker you have to spend a good amount of time or anything like that knows that sometimes you are just really tired and need a break from each other. And that's just spending time together, add in spending hours on your feet in crappy weather and from early in the day and/or starting at night and going to early morning. And leads are usually in at least 3/4 of the show. I'm so glad shows are switching to shorter runs so they aren't getting so worn out. Even 15 episodes would be better than 22.
I love you Gillian!!!! My wife in another life! Still heartbroken about her saying that the 11th season of The X-Files will for sure be the last for her.......how do you end an entire series/ character arc by the revelations that your son is still alive and that you are pregnant again???

Wonderful Gillian, still a head-turner to this day, fantastic actress. I'm in my late 30s now and I still remember Scully was probably my first female crush as a teenager (she was older than me by about 13 or 14 years lol).

I love how she sounded American at the beginning of the interview, iThen she started to sound more British as the interview went along.
She grew up and lived for many years in both places.
I was looking for a more recent interview and I stumbled onto this one. I can totally relate to the hair issue. It is not fun having thick long hair that a drop of rain takes it all out of proportion and having to look at total chaos of frizz and no matter how many times you brush it, it's look beyond any level of normal. I once was at a hairdressers and took two people an hour to straighten it - no lie, and certainly no joke! When I got my hair cut super short, it would dry in a towel. I can totally see this hair issue a problem for D.D regarding hanging around waiting. And also with her having to actually put up with dealing with the effort that goes into just having a reasonable hair style.
But it's not; it's Spring 2016
I could only see it being a problem if she were the one causing it. What the production team wants her to look like isn’t her fault, she probably hated sitting around while they constantly styled her hair, too

@@briantidey2225 I wish, but she made it pretty clear (2 years later, more than 3 ago) that she was done with the X-Files. The only (possible) way it happens again is in a third movie with a script that blows her away; because she & Duchovny always thought there'd be a 3rd movie, so... that's the only (possible) way.
They/the X-Files writers & producers really let her down in the end.

She's lived in England for 20 years, so it makes sense she would be in stuff happening there (i.e. the Crown, The Fall, Sex Education, Bleak House, etc) and she's great; I mean, while Duchovny has done more writing and music she has become a much better actor (than he is or was), and he was the first (at the end of the first run) to leave the show leaving her to do 2 years of that Dogget Reyes stuff. Not to mention the fact that even after all these years when they went to do the 6, and then 10, episode series they were trying to pay her way less than him
-and then aside from the monster of the week stuff, couldn't even write a better storyline. So I don't blame her disenchantment from the show (by this point) at all.
A third & final movie is the only way it could, as well as should, wrap itself better than the show ever managed to; and it's the only thing she (might) agree to... and fairly so.

She was the reason I stayed, watching the X-Files. She was brilliant
A lot of silly comments on her accent. She lived in London from age 2-12, so she basically learned how to talk surrounded by English people. And obviously lived in the US for many years and back to England as well, so the toned down half and half accent is not posing or cultural appropriation.
It is actually charming. The fake voice is the acting voice that you are used to hearing.
This is like someone from the south in the USA that lives in the north. But when they go back south their accent comes back.

You miss an important point - you do not know what he was offered at the start of the negotiation. Also, she said something along the lines of "I let David's team do the negotiation and then ask for what he is getting". Pretty sure if the negotiation was the other way round the first offer to David would be less than the last offer to Gillian, That is how negotiations work.
Not shocking at all. This is where you market yourself, network yourself, and have stellar management, and PUSH them to do their jobs. Women tend to not focus on any of that nearly as much as men do. hence the half money offer. Its the individual's responsibility to set their own value in any situation where pay is involved.
They actually asked him something pretty brazen when he was first auditioning for the show as well back in '93. The asked David to "pick the one you'd work with and complements you and that's who we'll go with." He declined citing he didn't want to be responsible for someone's fate like that.

Considering that she’s a star too now and has been for a while, hopefully that’ll be sorted this time around
They don't always get public support and outrage. Sometimes they get a backlash against them, plus face future negative consequences looking for jobs. It's something she can finally do now because she's got enough status to give her power, plus is far enough in her career to be able to afford to take the risk.
As if they have a choice? They will be replaced by the next actress or be banned from Hollywood altogether, like Meghan Fox.
Amazing that in these modern times an established female actress gets higher salary than a new male actor, these scandals.

I've always loved Gillian. She has one of those interesting and pretty faces that I just love to watch no matter what role she is plaing, and in fact, the same goes for Glenn Close. As the first exposure I ever had to Gillian was the XFiles, I was so surprised later on to find out she has a British accent!!

@@InvalidUsername480 She is American. But she spent quite a lot of her childhood in London where she obtained her English accent. She is what's called bidialectal, where she speaks with a different accent in the same language depending on which environment she's in.

And not just London other parts of UK as well-she spent mos of her childhood perm in UK and then some of it when she ome bac for summer + some Xmas holidays!

I've had zero procedures done, but I take care of my skin every single day and have since I was a teen. She's looks her age, just great for her age, that's all. She doesn't look like she's had a single thing done.
