I have never had any experience building PCs, but I learn a lot from videos like this.
3:14 ok this one made me laugh.
I never knew not all long PCIe slots are 16x O:
Jack Le I think it tells you the specific detail in motherboard manual.
Sometimes if you have two graphics cards the top slot could go down to x8 to share the lanes
You can also tell by looking in the slot if for some reason you've lost the manual and your board also doesn't say next to the slot. On a x16 the slot will be full of pins, x8 there will be half and x4 half again.
Usually the top slot is x16 pcie but you should always consult your manual, but usually using x8 pci-e you would get most of the performance, also it is better to use slots that are directly connected with pci-e to the cpu and not through the pch. Since the connection via the pch is shared with other devices and it is limited to 4 lanes.
Specifically, this 4x slot run off the chipset and compete for bandwidth with the sata and usb ports, so its very very bad to put a GPU there (also it add latency). You usually put a sound card or a capture card or PCie 4X to NVMe adapter in this kind of slot.
Jack Le some mobos have all slots 16x though as long as you have enough lanes
the only unorthodox thing about my PC is probably the dedicated sound card. it doesn't even work anymore, but it's still there
Awh. At least you can feel happy when you're playing an old game that has a splash screen advertisement for them fancy audio technologies of yore.
A dedicated card like Audigy Rx is perfect for muh soundfonts
I have been for about six months if not longer been watching videos to learn from the experts and taking advice on future purchases to either upgrade or start with a new build and having nothing but frustrations.
PC Parts Picker takes me down the long road of selecting items that FLAG as compatibility issues, either motherboard, SATA Drive, GPU conflicts in one way or another. Also I should mention my ideas in selecting parts usually adds up to a price well over my budget making the whole process a waste of time of my effort.
So others videos say small changes can make an older system better in the short term. So below my old system and I have no idea what should STAY and what can be replaced using the current system.
Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (I know this is out of date, but if I wanted lets say a AMD RYZEN 7 3700)
ASUS GeForce GTX 550 Ti (I know needs update, but to what and with what motherboard?)
16G Memory Kit DDR3-1866 CL10 240 ( I know I need to update to DDR4 3600 x16gb) Motherboard?
Motherboard P8Z68-V LX ( NO idea what to select "X570" for the ATX form factor I would like that is compatible for the above items or goals)
ATX Form Factor (Prebuilt CYBERPOWER CASE) Do I or should I update my case?
12 inch x 9 inch ( 30.5 cm x 22.9 cm )
Your AMZ/NEWEGG parts videos seem so easy to me but when I try this I seem to start from scratch and disregard my old system. Simply I need a push, to get over the fear of making purchases that in the end will be a waste of money with a system of new parts that will not work in the end.
I have a old Dell Inspiron 530 I found on the curb I use which is very nicely cable managed but it had no hard drive so it has a laptop hard drive in it held in with one screw and a zip tie. But it works just fine! Though I'm going to 3d print a adapter for it I just haven't gotten around to it.
i lole'd when i saw that ssd at 1:00

Nice The Verge PC tutorial
Completely re-did the system of a fiend of mine. 1. Also did the gpu in the x4 slot, his aircooler had 2 fans facing each other instead of pull/push, didn't put the ram in the correct slots and had 3 120mm intake fans but no outtake fan...
Honestly this build is still better than the verge's thanks to the follow up video addressing the problems and providing solutions.
Wonder if Lyle was the one who built that system that Jay diagnosed 🤔
When you watch this video after watching the Verge's disastrous assemble...
Running a custom loop in my Corsair SPEC-02 mid tower is a bit janky. I have my D5 pump mounted to one of my front 140mm fans. I also drilled the rivets out of the 5.25" bay cage so I could remove it, then cut a hole in the top of the case with a dremel so I could mount a 360mm rad where I used to have two 120mm fans. Running it in push/pull too. Had to remove the rear 120mm to fit the rad, but thats fine with me; I keep my side panel window off for my GPU, and because I didn't like the window tint. ALSO, wasn't able to fit (or afford) a resevoir, so I use a t-adapter with an end cap to fill the system. PITA, but it works. My 4.4GHz 1.325v 6800k hits around 45°C at a normal full load (a little over 55°C in the Blender BMW test), and idles at ambient (32°C in my room). Overall, for $50, I am very happy with my case. Came with 2 120mm fans and 2 140mm fans (all LED), and even "supports" a 360mm rad. I could """fit""" a 280mm at the front, but I don't have the need for it until I get a waterblock for my GTX 1080. Highly reccomend this case if you dont mind modding it a little!
I always have the top and back fans as the intake, and the front three fans as my exhaust.
I feel like it would look better with the gpu in the second slot just because of how open it is underneath with it having 9 slots and an extra bit of a gap instead of the usual 7
Nice makeup in that other video. TOKYO DRIFT, EMERGENCY BRAKE. I didn't have health insurance and I went to coma by laughing.
3:20 OMG Kyle's Lyle impression is IDENTICAL! It's almost like they are the same person
The verge video brought me here lol
Just recently started to build my first PC. Finding decent parts for sale at local retailers or refurbished sales is incredibly difficult.
I did recently find a very old Velocity Micro Edge Z5 case recently for free, and have thought about a mid-level gamer build.
Then I see some of these cases you're building in, even the ones only like 60 or 70 that look so easy to build in. The biggest pain seems to be cable management.
Having been watching your videos, I feel like, even though I haven't done it yet, I could build a newer style Ryzen PC at least.
Really informative and you seem relaxed during your videos, which helps get more information across.
Keep it up! I really enjoy these videos!
Kenny Blankenship especially with the current graphicscard and ram prices. Im glad I got my hand on my gtx 1060 3gb for 210€ last year. I wasn't willing to pay 350€ for the 6gb version because it was already effected by mining there. And for that 5-10% performance 140€ more? Nope xD
Kiljien I get that for sure! I've been looking for the possibility of a gtx 960 of some brand for a decent price (65-75 usd). I'm cool with getting a better one when prices deflate a little.
Ye these are also my thoughts. The i7 7700 and the 16GB Ram will last long enougth but the 1060 3GB will beginn to struggle first. I can play every current game on high - ultra setting with 60fps+ on 1080p but that wont last for so long. Im just waiting for the new Nvidia Gen
Looks like a perfectly fine build to me. The Verge didn't do so bad building that beast of a pc.
Jk

I'm a new viewer that just built my pc with a similar GPU but i put it in the 4x slot cause i had no idea about the difference between the two slots. I literally paused the video to switch my GPU to the right slot on my motherboard. THANK YOU!
Your Lyle impression is the best I’ve ever heard!
Thanks for this video. I'm currently researching on building my first gaming pc. I've been console guy all my life and I'm not going to lie, it can be a bit over whelming on the many discussions needed in order to build a PC. But I like how you're the wrong way of building a PC.
read the motherboard manual. Its a lifesaver for newbs.
Alex V4 This. The manual is most important, in my opinion, for the front panel pins.
I mounted my CPU fans blowing downwards, the two 140mm top fans and one 120mm rear fan are intakes. Two 140mm bottom fans and two 120mm front fans are exhaust. Noctua NH D15 would hit the RAM if I mounted it normally pushing front to rear.
7700k delidded at 5.0GHz in mid 70°s, can go 5.2 in mid 90°s. Corsair C70 case, MSI Z270 Gaming M7, ZOTAC 1080ti, EVGA G2 750 PSU, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000 CL15, and all Noctua fans.
I had a delid just quit....it's not worth it dude..up to 4.7ghz maybe but should probably just undervolt at 4.5ghz...at least you can stay in the 60-65c range. that's with the loop too idk could try a 360mm rad.
JR 60-65°C range is maybe 4.8GHz with a delid and my air cooler.
Special EDy this one sitting right at about 65c at 4500mhz and like 1.23v, little wamer now. I don't know that haswell block is alittle hotter maybe. About the same stuff dude not gonna stop it going to 80c if clock it etc.

HAY YA!!

2:40 LOL i see what ya did there Kyle
Low-key glad you knew about the fan going against the mic.
I will be building my first system in about 2 days and this video actually was very helpful. I had no idea it mattered where the graphics card went.
I’m a Beginner and I still find what is so wrong with that pc, this hurts
I had to Velcro my SD cards to the back side of my case because the case I bought didn’t come with any trays.... I’m glad I had Velcro though, it actually worked out super well and doesn’t look to sketchy 😂
Looking back, my case is very restrictive. I bought what I thought was a good case and I love the look, but it's pretty small. Once I got my mobo installed I didn't really have room for cable management. It was my first build and I can see some places for improvement but I think the case is a big issue. When I'm ready for a new build (or significant upgrade) in a few years I'll certainly make sure to get a larger case where I can properly route everything.
Can you tell me what that case was? Like brand namr
I'd like to see the numbers with the "bad PC" except with the GPU in a x16 slot and both DIMMs of memory correctly slotted, since I feel that would reveal a lot about how forgiving modern components are to bad airflow.
Trainguyrom Yeah, 99% sure that the performance drop was because of that, unless you have such garbage airflow that your cpu is thermal throttling.
I think the same... The bad build could perform much similar to the good one if it wasn't for the GPU difference
I thought the Verge already covered the “how to NOT build a pc”
I had a hard time finding a case that I can put a floppy in, but it was accomplished.
I wasn’t gonna watch the whole video because of how much it hurt looking at that pc so wrongly accused of ugliness, but he fixed it so nice
What is this?
OH it is emergency brake..
*TOKYO DRIFT!*
Weeee weeee
Dat ssd mount is BA
Just cut a hole in the front of my case to fit a 240mm rad and reverse the airflow to back to front it works pretty good
I kinda built my current PC is a slipshod way about 2 years ago, i really need to take it apart and put it all back together more neatly at some point, (give it a clean-out too) but i plan on getting a new processor in the near future, so maybe soon.

Wow I never knew putting your GPU placement on some motherboards can affect performance, learned alot thanks man!
I accidentally mounted my GPU to an M.2 slot. Instructions unclear.
i genuinely didnt know about putting your graphics card in the wrong pci e slot would affect performance and was wondering why my fps was half what it should be so i changed it and it is so much better this really helped! :P
You have to use separate cables for the GPU.
The split cables are supposed for SLI.

Let me tell you the first time I built a PC. They still had ribbon cables and Sata cables were just becoming a thing. Back in the day when having a neon setup with black lights was the pinnacle.
Anyway, I didn't understand proper cable management and my knowledge of computers was very basic.
I actually had to get an adaptor for my hdd because it had old connection ports and I had Sata connections on my board. I was lost and through trial and error, I got my PC working. It was the greatest feeling ever. Fast forward 12 years and everything has changed. Building a PC has never been easier. Cable management is amazing on cases now. Case design overall has gotten so much better with tempered glass, and magnetic side panels. I still am not used to not seeing optical drives. It's weird to not put a Disk reader in my PC but I'm warming up to it
Concerning PCi-e slots, I've experienced the last PCi-e port was indeed the fastest on the motherboard (which does not apply in every scenario) since the manual specifically mentioned that if it's a single gpu config, to use the bottom PCI-e lane, due to compatibility and best performance! I could use the upper ones, but since it's a manufacturers recommendation, well we should listen!
