The Epic Journey Of Modern Pilgrims To The Holy Land

  • Simon Reeve begins in Istanbul, Turkey, a busy medieval staging post for pilgrims to the Holy Land. Before falling to the Ottoman Empire, it was the centre of Roman Christianity under Emperor Constantine. His mother Helena, arguably the first pilgrim to the Holy Land, brought back relics from Jerusalem to fill the city's churches, which made it a major destination for pilgrimage in its own right for centuries to come. Simon visits the magnificent Hagia Sophia and a traditional Turkish bath, discovering that pilgrims brought public bathing back with them to Europe, showing how pilgrimage spread practical ideas as well as religious ones.
Simon travels on to the Holy Land, following in the footsteps of Victorian travellers who used the definitive guide book of the period, published in 1876 by Thomas Cook, whose grand excursions to the Holy Land pioneered the modern package holiday.
He drives into the West Bank and on to Bethlehem. Despite not being religious, he is moved to tears by the memory of family Christmases when he sees the spot where Christ is said to have been born inside the Church of the Nativity. He then visits the isolated 6th-century monastery of Mar Saba, a place few outsiders are permitted to enter today. Simon camps in the desert and goes fishing in the Sea of Galilee. He also meets David, a reformed drug addict who lives in a village inside the ancient town of Nazareth, where people dress, live and work as if they are characters from the Bible.
In Jerusalem, Simon meets a doctor who treats visitors who become so overwhelmed that they become convinced they personally are the Messiah. Several million people a year from all three major religions come to visit or worship in one of the most highly contested square miles on the planet. Simon visits the Israeli CCTV command centre where everyone is kept under constant surveillance.
Finally, Simon joins in the ancient ritual of walking the Via Dolorosa, the route taken by Jesus as he carried his cross to the site of his crucifixion, ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. At journey's end, he reflects on what pilgrimage can offer for a non-believer, bringing a sense of achievement and a chance to learn more about the history and culture that shapes our lives to this day.

Ive been all over the world, was lucky enough to visit Jerusalem, as an agnostic it was not until I looked down on the majestic sight of the holy city from the mount of olives did I feel connected. Once I spent a few days walking the streets and ultimately visiting the Church of the Holy Sepluca did the hairs on my arms stand on end. Such a wonderful feeling of fulfilment and comfort that I have never felt previously or indeed ever again. Jerusalem will always be in my heart and mind, I will travel back as I need to feel the peace and contentment once more.

Really enjoyed this journey as with all of Simon's travels. He has a down to earth approach that connects with people on the ground as and when he bumps into them. This programme was a fairly comprehensive coverage but omitted the Bahá'i World Centre and epic gardens and buildings on Mount Carmel, in Haifa. Maybe a whole programme is needed to give it justice.

I pray for Jerusalem for it's people. I was wondering what, exactly, am I praying for? After watching this documentary and other's I realise I am praying for an encounter with the 'Living Christ' and I'm praying that every human being will experience that same encounter. Every moment in Jerusalem is about Jesus. The King of the Jews the Christ of the people of this world.

This was a really beautiful, eye opening, documentary.
I am no longer religious but grew up Southern Baptist (Christianity) and from the stories as an adolescent I am shocked and saddened by the reality of the Biblical cities I pictured so differently.
I am not naive but it still saddens me... I've spent the last year researching the history of religions and it's not a topic that is overwhelmingly happy.. I believe everyone has the right to believe, faith is Hope to many but unfortunately faith is also twisted into a control for power by many and continuous blood is shed for it.

God, he's so blessed to be able to see, touch, and feel the Holy Land directly.
    I want to do pilgrimage one day, but I'll begin my Journey in Alexandria - Sinai - Ascalon - Bethlehem - Jerusalem - Nazareth - Acre - Tyrus - Sidon - Antioch - Edessa - 7 Churches of Asia - Iznik - Izmit - Istanbul - Thessalonika - Athens - Epirus - Düres - Naples - Roma - Perugia - Ravenna - Florence - Pavia - Milan - Avignon - Toulouse - Barcelona - Zaragosa - Salamanca - Santiago - Asturias - Pamplona - Bordeaux - Tours - Chartres - Paris - Reims - Trier - Mainz - Frankfurt - Aachen - Köln - Canterbury - London - Winchester - Worcester - York - Durham - Lindisfarne. I think that's doable for a year of pilgrimage.

I can imagine this fellow would make a good documentary host on other topics. But for this one, probably better to get someone with more insight about this particular topic.

Does anyone bother to put the Crusades into context? No. What exactly is the context?
**VERY important note to understand this information is the term abrogation. What it means is that the new verse is better than the older verse.** After Islam was born there are TWO massive parts of their history that must be known. 1 Muhammad was in Medina when he started writing what became known as the Quran. During this period is when you find verses of the Quran that say very nice things. There is no conflict in this part of the Quran. Through about 10 years give or take Muhammad has a small number of converts. Eventually he and his followers were told to leave and to go Mecca. 2 Mecca is an entirely new world. Now verses are written that direct believers toward all non-Muslim. There are three choices. 1) Convert to Islam 2) Accept being a Dhimmi - lower than a slave. You kids are taken away from you and are raised to be Janissary. You must also pay extra taxes for being a Dhimmi. 3) You are killed. Kids still raised to be Janissary.
The Middle East and North Africa are filled with Christian nations. No Christian in these places were forcing anyone to become one. Whether they became a Christian or not they weren't tortured, murdered, beheaded, made to be lower than a slave, their children indoctrinated to be elite Christian soldiers etc. What happened to these Christian nations? Murdered, Dhimmi and Janissary etc. This fate of these Christian brothers and sisters under the foot of Islam, which conquered up in to Europe and stopped in France by Charles The Hammer Martel and central Europe by the Famed Polish Hussars and in Eastern Europe as well. ONLY after massive attacks all around southern Europe did the Crusades ever start. To get a picture of how many attacks happened on Christian nations by Muslim middle Eastern nations I will provide a link. Keep in mind that the Crusades were 1 defensive and 2 a rescue attempt for those now in bondage.
In BRIEF on the battles where Islam (political Islam) attacked Christian Nations AND ALL Crusader attacks on Islam (political Islam). Direct below.
