This is JP at his prime, in my opinion. Of COURSE he's laid down many awesome since this period, but I just feel the man's playing straddled that perfect spot between fusion and metal at this point that has since gone more to the metal direction. I also miss the more stripped-back sound of his guitar - his sound seems flooded with effects these days - that's not a bad thing necessarily and I'm no tone purist, but I prefer the simplicity of his sound some times.

Yeah I miss that RG Custom. Such a pure sound. Falling into Infinity is definitely underrated. But it was the latest album out from then when I first started listening to it, so I might be a bit biased. But there are some gems on that album. I miss the fusion sound. Everyone once in a while it pops backs up, but they had something special for a while there.

Yeah his "Ibanez era" really had his best tones imo....I love most of the compositions since but the actual sound/tone hasn't been quite the same, don't think it's really a guitar thing since he also changed his primary amp setup

So I need to preface this comment as the brand defenders may jump down my throat. So I played a music man and it was the best playing and sounding instrument I’ve ever played just couldn’t afford the bugger, I’ve got a prestige Ibanez which is amazing but it’s just lacking something to me to make it as special as that MM…
But, John’s tone with his Ibanez is so so so much more refined than that on his music man guitars, I don’t know what exactly changed it just doesn’t have that creaminess after he changed
