It's dance music without instruments. It was a tradition in the Western Isles. It's worth looking in to it - it is a fascinating art, full of humour, satire etc.
The Campbells of Greepe, also Mary Ann Kennedy, have recorded wonderful examples handed down in their family
I think it’s also defined as singing songs that don’t make sense or are random- the idea is they sound pretty and it doesn’t matter the meaning of the words being sung
It's singing that uses meaningless syllables and/or nonsense (mostly) lyrics to deliver a tune composed for an instrument rather than as a song melody. The point is to get the tune across.
