  • In this video I am training to land on runway 28 at St. Barths, TFFJ. Although not as "iconic" as the dive to runway 10, this approach is very difficult with no straight in to the threshold, and gusty, shifting tailwinds. I made a rookie mistake by not compensating for the push as I turned to final.

I thank you for sharing this. On an internet full of know-it-alls, you show the reality: none of us are perfect pilots. And that's okay. I wouldn't dare to assume I'd do any better. Must have been the experience of a lifetime!

Back 30 years ago when I flew the Alaskan Bush (we didn’t have Go Pros ) a most of the places we landed were one way, no pavement , sand bars, gravel bars, tundra or sides of mountains. It was hair raising ,but exhilarating after you successfully did a difficult one. Thanks for you video . For a first time there that was pretty good.

Great video! Post production awesome! Seriously, as a pilot I thought you had it and then your mains hit short I screamed “NOOOOOOO”. You rock!

Thank you for uploading this and leaving yourself vulnerable to criticism in the comments section - it's easy to leave the unflattering footage on the cutting room floor and only post successes, but nothing beats authenticity and honesty. Looks like a tricky approach, happy to see you got the airplane on the ground in one piece and got it stopped with room to spare. I'm coming up on my Private checkride currently, and these dudes would draw and quarter me if I had the courage to upload footage of some of my touchdowns. Blue skies and tailwinds!

Thanks for your gracious comment. One of the reasons I posted it was to be just that, vulnerable. Too many people hide behind their keyboards and point fingers, and haven't walked that mile in my shoes to see the obstacles I've had to overcome to get to this point. Never in my life had I ever dreamt that I'd have the opportunity to fly my very own airplane to St. Barths, that was an accomplishment enough for me. Not getting the landing perfect is just fluff.

I am relieved that your nose gear held and you didn't have prop strike. Looks like a minor thing, but once I also had a touchdown slightly before the paved surface (at another, more forgiving location), but it delivered a quite a loud blow to the main landing gears and violently shook the entire airframe. As it was a touch-and-go, we glanced at the shadow of the climbing aircraft, checking that we haven't lost any of the wheels after becoming airborne again...

You could have flipped it in that sand! Why would you risk it with all that runway....

Who needs a runway when you have a sandy beach 🤔

Why cant you go around after Eden rock? If i was approaching too low and flat like that i'd be going around for sure.

You took off on runway 12. How could you land on runway 28? 12/30.

You're lucky you didn't leave your gear at the end of the runway. If this is a 210 it's an inappropriate plane for this airport
