  • Anna Miller began her ballet training in Southern California under Marina Fliagina. Miller received four consecutive merit-based National Training Scholarships from American Ballet Theatre, placed as a Youth America Grand Prix NYC Finalist in 2012, and was accepted into the Perm State Choreographic College in Russia. Miller was faced with an injury during the 2015 company audition season, and confronted a need to expand her professional horizons beyond ballet. At just eighteen years old, she moved to New York City. New York enabled Miller necessary freedoms to grow and develop as an individual outside of the ballet. Miller is now a Pre-Medical student at Columbia University’s School of General Studies. She plans on receiving a Doctorate degree in Biological Sciences, as well as a Medical Degree. Miller is currently a National Science Foundation S-STEM Scholar, and recently concluded participating in the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Collaborative Program with Goldman Sachs.

Great question, which is better, to tell a young dancer that they should do something else or to let them continue even if they don't really have a good shot. One teacher I spoke to made a good point that it might be better to let them find out on their own. In this country, a lot of people refuse to believe what they're being told. So even if someone tries to tell them the truth, they won't listen. And the person who is trying to be honest is just going to be blamed. On the other hand, you hear families say they wish they had known before spending a small fortune and making so many sacrifices. No easy answer.

Soviet dancers didn’t have the kind of body they require today, but they were way stronger! Girls didn’t have to starve themselves to be able to dance. The degree of the arches and the articulation of strong feet are two different things.
