  • In the far north of Siberia on the Yamal Peninsular a remote group of nomadic reindeer herders still live in tents whose design may date back thousands of years. The precursor to the modern tipi (tepee), the choom is made of fir poles and has covers of reindeer (caribou) hide. They move every few days throughout the winter so that the herd can gain access to the hidden fields of lichen that lie beneath the snow.

A short research film looking at the making and moving of the traditional choom (also chum or tchum) of the Siberian reindeer herding nomads on and around the Yamaal Peninsular. See

Truth is ... these are some of the strongest people on earth. Especially the ladies.. carrying these heavy wooden tent. Taking it apart. And being able to live in these temperatures. All they got is their family and reindeers. No hospital, supermarket, running water. I trully admire them.

You can feel that they have really asked which bits of modern technology are worthwhile. The iron stove was introduced in the first half of C19th and is vital in winter, but many leave it behind in the summer as the smoke keeps off the mosquitoes. If you look carefully you can see a plexiglass porthole in one tent, but they crack in the cold so they have given up on them now. They are not stuck in the past but always evolving to survive the harsh environment.

@@deb5932 dude theyre not stupid they been making sleds. i think they heavily rely on each other but Because of Cities and towns people have been moving to cities and not coming back and making things not as easy to get as they used to have skilled labour to carve the wood and make all these things during summer and prepare for winter. but since their populations decreased alot of the skilled labour goes with it they have no choice BUT to rely on government. Dude same thing happens all over the world with every single Tribe or a once prosperous town. when Government interviens and Cos a problem so then they can later sell you the solution. or when they higher taxes and companies move abroad and the ppl that work there and depend on it suffer. these ppl were just fine even great before intervining their way of life. i think the problem is the bullshit sold to them a bout BIG CITIES and then when they finally go to these big cities they are treated like second class citzens in their own home cos theyre are suddenly start at the Bottom.
