    Right handed left eyed here.
Pistol method is exactly what I do. And always have since I was a kid shooting with buddies and no one knew about eye dominance. As a kid it was natural the square the gun up with left eye and I didn't realize I was even doing it.
Rifle on the other hand was more tricky.
Eye relief and picking up the cross hairs was a nightmare so much that I trusted myself open sights at 100 more than a scope(I still didn't know about eye dominance and just thought it was me sucking 😔
Then I learned, while shooting a buddies new bow, which I have never done before, couldn't hit a foam deer at 30yds. My buddies dad called me over to the shop and did the finger on the corner of the room method. He then went inside and got his older sons left handed bow and gave it to me. It was incredibly difficult left handed to be stable but by golly if I was ringing up vitals hits!
He then gave me advice on scopes which worked well for me. He said because left handed rifles are few and far between out in the sticks just shoot right but practice looking through scopes in spare time.
    1 eye relief
2 shut left eye and pick up hairs
    3 open left eye
It happens without thinking now and my right eye is strong enough now to pick up crosshairs with just a squint of the left eye.
Clays? Idk I was pert darn good I think. 1 actual competition I did 89, 94, 97 in that order and took first in my class with a 12g ribbed pump farm gun lol. Both eyes open point and shoot method, brain kinda does the work I believe.
Fun stories for gun guys sorry for the running on

But would you now rather pick the left handed bow and aim naturally with your left eye, or a right handed bow and force your right eye to aim?

Same with me... I never had a real issue shooting right handed with a left eye dominance, neither does my son....with anything....bow, rifle, shotty, pistols, slingshot....for me I guess I just adjusted, and didn't realize it until resently.... never had an issue shooting anything... speaking for myself, I'd rather be more coordinated with my right side and adjusting my vision than the other way around. I tried shooting lefty for some time awhile back, and it didn't work for me.

Pretty good tips honestly!! Im sorta ambidextrous. My right hand is definitely my dominant hand but for some reason I was a lot more comfortable and accurate using my left had for the trigger, but usually my right eye focuses quicker than my left eye. I've been shooting for almost 9yrs shooting right-handed firearms with my left hand without much of an issue (just have to be a bit more careful with the ejected shells), even looking through sights with my left eye isn't too much of an issue. I have more of a struggle with my left eye focusing on sights on handguns (except when using a red dot) than my right eye. Oddly enough when the handgun is closer to my face (for example in Center Axis Relock position), my left eye can focus on the front sight pretty easy. Recently I started plinking with a .22 Rugar handgun using my right hand to try to be proficient with both hands. Never know when you might need to other hand in a situation. Just got to practice practice practice till it becomes second nature (obviously making sure you are using proper techniques and stances as well).

Army veteran, right hand/left eye dominant. Handgun, I do exactly that. Right handed feels more natural with a handgun, so I just use my left eye.
Rifles, on the other hand, I had only shot once or twice when I was a little kid, and didn't think I would have trouble with it until basic training in the army LOL.
What I QUICKLY realized, though, is how UNnatural shooting a rifle with my right hand (even though I'm right handed/dominant) felt. A rifle just FEELS more natural in my left hand even though I'm right hand dominant. This sort of works out perfectly because I am left eye dominant already. So really, there wasn't any "training" required to switch firing hands/eyes etc. All my drill sergeants told me I should just try shooting (rifles) right handed and just practice it. I never did, and still ended up shooting at LEAST marksman, but usually expert my whole 6 years.
The only downside is the Army only has right handed rifles. Makes catching hot brass in some of the more 'weathered' rifles in the arms room much more common lol.
My personal mental dilemma is why some things are inherently labeled "left" or "right" handed THINGS. Tools, items, etc.
I want my more dominant hand/arm to control the rifle with. That's what makes more sense to me..
I'm also a big fisherman and the same can be said for baitcasting reels. (faaaar off topic I know, but maybe someone that reads this can relate) LEFT HANDED baitcasters (conventional reel, not a spinning reel) are harder to come by, and considered trash by most bass fisherman lol. Even left handed people don't use them. It's so odd, because with a left handed reel your left hand JUST reels.... I want my dominant arm to control the rod. Work the bait, feel for bites, fight the fish.. Even casting, you see the right handed guys casting right handed reels, have to SWITCH HANDS every single cast because the handle is on the RIGHT side of the reel, and they're using that same hand to press the spool release button and cast the rod.
On a "left handed reel", the rod NEVER leaves my right hand. My right hand casts, works the bait, fights the fish, all while the crank/handle remains on the LEFT side where my reeling hand is.
This is how traditional SPINNING reels have always been.. a 'right handed' reel has the crank on the left side and you reel with your left hand. For some fucked reason it's backwards on a bait-caster.
doubt anyone reads this but I got it off my chest. I'm good. hahahaha

Don't worry bro I read it, thank you for sharing, I just got into shooting and found out I'm right hand, left eye dominant. Pistol hasn't seemed to be a problem, but I haven't held a rifle yet. I'm hoping my experience is similar to yours.

I'm right handed, left eye dominant. I've shot left handed with my left eye since I was a kid. No one ever pointed it out as an issue. I hit what I was aiming at. That was all that mattered. I shoot all right handed rifles. Trying to "train" the right eye just so you can hold the rifle right handed just builds frustration in new shooters. Follow the eye dominance. It is far easier to hold the rifle on the left than trying to overcome genetics.

My brother was surprised that I shot so well with being left eye dominant and right handed. He then said that I had titled the rifle. I had no idea! Thanks for this video. I am going to shoot some more this weekend since deer season starts on the 21st of this month. I am going to try holding the rifle with my left hand. Now I am right, hand left eye shooting whether I like it or not. I used your looking through my hands to determine the dominant eye technique, and it actually came back to my left eye, which I found interesting. But for a rifle, since I can not train my right eye to be dominant since I can barely see through it, I guess I will have to train my left hand for that. For the pistol, I have been doing exactly what you were talking about with turning my head to catch the sights. So your tip on that was extremely helpful. Thank you very much. I spent 38 years working in the security field. These days, I deliver auto parts to commercial customers. I still would like to be able to use my firearms effectively.

    Tactical Hyve,
Thank you very much for uploading your highly informative and succinct video.
I have one question regarding your first method though.
If I trained my right eye to be dominant (I am left-eye dominant and right-handed), would this transfer to pistol shooting as well or do I have to be careful with which eye I should use, depending on whether I use a handgun or long gun?
On another note, when using a red dot, do I have to bring the red dot to my dominant eye side too?
Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

Same, shooting lefty turned out to be the easiest option. For me atleast it was alot easier to learn how to shoot with my less dominant hand than my less dominant eye. It's not a perfect fix, but I literally can't close my left eye without closing my right eye too, but I can close my right eye and my left is wide open.

Good info however. There are some people out there that have no vision or at least bad enough vision in their right eye that using it is impossible and shooting left handed with a rifle just does not work. What are your suggestions then? There has to be a solid technique out there shooting a rifle right handed through a red dot or scope with your left eye.

It is now impossible to shoot my long guns using my right eye. Being a sports photographer, I have trained myself to put the camera the camera up to my left eye without thinking about it. After watching this video it appears the only choice is to learn how to shoot a long gun left handed? I can't even hold a rifle left handed it feels so unnatural.

I do have imperfect vision that is glasses or contact corrected, and if I try to keep both eyes open, they’ll cross during the anxiety and cause worse problems than squinting and reopening?

Hey guys, thanks so much for the tips. I’m ex-law enforcement from years back. I was trained on the Glock and 12 gauge Mossberg. I never got any AR platform training. Now that i own one and am beginning to shoot, do you guys have any advise on me shooting a right handed rifle with my left hand? Context: my right eye has amblyopia (lazy eye), so i CAN’T shoot a rifle with my right hand. I’m right handed so i taught myself from a young age to shoot a rifle and shotgun (all long guns) left handed.
    My primary question…
As i progress, will i run into issues such as, fast mag changes, or any other issues you guys can think of shooting a right handed gun? Would you recommend me buying a left handed AR? Again I’m a total newbie with all things AR. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Blessings

@@stephaniepaul8518 In a "tactical" sense, it's nice to be able to shoot both sides since you will be able to use corners for cover more effectively [left hand, and right handed corners] and by more effectively I mean you can use it as cover while not exposing yourself too much. ie. shooting right handed for left hand corners, and left handed for right hand corners.
