The Silent Twins: A Journey Into Madness | Random Thursday

  • In this special Halloween video, we examine June and Jennifer Gibbons, twin girls who became known as the "Silent Twins" due to the fact that they never spoke except to each other, and even then, they did so in their own language nobody else could understand.
    As they grew older, they became obsessed with their twinhood, and their obsession consumed them, leading them into violence and crime.
    The twins were trapped in their relationship. They couldn't be together and they couldn't function apart. They came to believe that the only way either of them would be happy was for one of them to die.

    They were treated like monsters due to how racist the medical system used to be, many twins do not need to talk to each other simply because they know one another very well, if you've ever communicated with your best friend or family member with a single glance, it's the same thing. These girls were locked away because they were simply misunderstood and mischaracterized, partly because they had mental illness, and partly because they were black. Their story is scary not because of what two minds became, but because of the system that abused them since they were children.

    Their wiki says that the surviving sister lives without psychiatric help and independently in her home; I can therefore guarantee she is not schizophrenic, as their condition is not curable and does not vanish. They would require their medications for life. Having very little knowledge of their case other your video and the short wiki article, it sounds more like Shared Pyschosis subtype folie imposée; whereby, two people have a close bond and one suffers from psychosis. Due to the close bond and such, the second person begins to share in their delusions...after some time of separation, the one individual would be expected to return to normal. It's more of an...educated stab in the dark...but the surviving twin was definitely not schizophrenic.

    • @audreyneal6168
      @audreyneal6168 Před 5 lety +85

      UTMB Underground I mean, couldn’t she be? You can live independently with schizophrenia. I imagine if she never got diagnosed and finally she did and got proper medication she’d just continue on with life, taking her medication from home. You can have schizophrenia and not live in a mental hospital. Schizophrenics make up 1% of the population and majority of them live pretty normal lives.

    • @utmbunderground
      @utmbunderground Před 5 lety +25

      Audrey Neal , while she might not require constant inpatient psychiatric treatment, should she have schizophrenia- she would require medications. Furthermore, schizophrenics have a high rate of relapse due to poor compliance (due to their condition) so she would inevitably end up in the hospital for short durations of time somewhat frequently. Long story short, schizophrenics, depending on subtype, are typically unable to live without a caregiver and are definitely not able to sustain an independent lifestyle without medications.

    • @audreyneal6168
      @audreyneal6168 Před 5 lety +42

      UTMB Underground as i said, in home medications! That’s the easiest part of having schizophrenia in the modern day. You can administer them to yourself. And the thing is, they weren’t admitted to the hospital for schizophrenia, they just found it later on while monitoring them and then were released once deemed safe for society. Furthermore, If given proper medications you can live Independently. You have an archaic view of schizophrenia, now adays you can take regular perception medications for it, pills you’d pick up at CVS or Walgreens and take home. If your schizophrenia is manageable and you have a supportive friend or two you can (and most do) live completely independent lives.
      I really don’t think you fully understand the spectrum of schizophrenia my friend because you’re listing what life is like for those who have the most severe form of it. Many don’t have to stay in a mental hospital and when they “relapse” (Which is absolutely not the right term for it) it would only be for a short period of time. Schizophrenia isn’t a constant state of psychosis but a series of diffrent symptoms that run on a cycle, therefor, if her symptoms were managed enough, a mental facility might not even be necessary.
      I’m not saying she for sure had schizophrenia but it’s completely possible.

      That's actually fascinating. I'm the autistic twin, yet I simply don't remember having such a relationship with my brother. Even my parents never mentioned it. If anything, people tend to be surprised we're twins. The only weird moment was in our first year of kindergarten, when we were always fighting when we were together, and crying when we were separated. But we were like, 3/4yo so it's not really shocking.

      They didnt create their own language. They just talked fast and said words in a way that they both picked up.
      It's like how the old guy in Hot Fuzz talks. Hes speaking English, but hes talking rapidly and with a very strong accent.
      The twins heard and spoke in a way that was familiar to themselves, but not to anyone else despite still being English. If it was two tourists from China or Germany, youd expect them to get words or phrases pronounced incorrectly. These girls are native speakers of English, with a regional accent. It just so happens that the region is their house.

      I’m an identical twin. It is actually very rare for twins to have their own language. This misconception comes from the fact that you have two siblings developing at the same rate and so close they can often read each others body langauge as they babble and learn to talk.

    Cryptophasia is usually a simplified dialect of whatever language a pair of twins have been exposed to most, and usually emerges as a consequence of one or both being mentally disabled. One isn't picking up on the language as quickly as the other and they develop their own dialect adapting to each other's speech patterns so they can understand each other even if no one else can.

    I saw this on the ID channel last week. They were in school in some part of Wales and was described as being two Black kids in a sea of White faces. They would do things in unison and the younger twin was thought to be a bit more outgoing than the older twin June. June will keep the younger twin in check and keep her from speaking to anyone by looking at her a certain way. They became obsessed with Americans and our culture as they got older and started to date these American guys who were visiting. They burnt some shit down Out of rebellion because the guys they were dating we’re leaving for the States. They were placed in a mental hospital that was horrible and they were kept drugged often. After they were released at aged 28 I think the older twin died of natural causes in the van as they were leaving the mental hospital. No drugs was found in her system or anything. It was described that she died of a broken heart. The younger twin still lives there in Wales and visits her twin every day. They’re story was so sad.

Selective mutism is a thing. I had it as a small child, but not to their degree. If I'd had a twin to hide with/behind I might have been much worse too.
