Owner Of A Lonely Heart is from 1983. Roundabout = 1971. Big difference in band personnel etc

Well, first thing to consider, the album this song came from wasn't intended to be a Yes album in it's conception. It was to be a project focusing on the songs/music of South African musician Trevor Rabin. He formed a band to record his music with a couple of the members of Yes, that was to be called Cinema. After the project got rolling, a couple of other Yes members came on board, and in the end they decided to transform it into a Yes project since most of the members were involved. So, it has a very different sound than much of Yes's earlier work.
I'm big Yes fan, especially their earlier stuff, but I really liked this "side road" as well, unlike many other Yes fans.

90125 is THE reason that I am a YES and prof rock fan. I was 14 years old on March 9th, 1984 (I was so excited to be going to my 1st rock concert, I stared at my ticket for weeks!) "Sparkomatic Presents: YES at the Rosemont Horizon." The Rosemont Horizon was razed long ago.

Enter Trevor Rabin, a multi pinch rule taking and former teen heartthrob in his native South Africa, due to his membership in the group "Rabbit." Of "Rabbit" Trevor has said,"I think we sold more posters than albums!" 😄
Trevor brought most of the songs, including "Owner of A Lonely Heart" to the band fully finished. The song was originally, as the title suggests, a rather pedestrian song of a boy with a broken heart over a girl. If you listen to Trevor's solo work it is much closer to regular American rock and roll love songs than what he produced in Yes. When Jon Anderson was invited to sing on this track, he is the one that wrote the line about the eagle in the sky!
    🤔

My humble opinion, but if you're gonna listen to Yes, you want to stick to the period from '71-'77. They were a different band altogether after that. The Yes Album through Going For the One. Owner of a Lonely Heart is NOT representative of progs greatest band.

This was from 83' when the band changed lineups again with Trevor Rabin on guitar instead of Steve Howe. They started in 68' and are still going but not what they used to be. The video sucks, but if I remember right the band didn't have input on it and didn't like the videos. This was a huge hit in 83 and still gets played a lot on radio. That album (90125) is great but most Yes fans like their 70's stuff the best, though they still do great stuff but are less consistent. If you want your mind blown, try anything from Close To the Edge, Relayer or Going For The One. For example, the song Close To the Edge, Gates of Delirium, Sound Chaser, To Be Over, Awaken, etc. there are a million great ones.

  • @benjaminhawthorne1969

Most Yes fans consider that the band had two (2) distinct incarnations during its existence. Classic Yes, from 1968 - 1977 and New Yes, when Trevor Rabin joined (became) the band. in 1983. Classic Yes is best known for elaborate, psychedelic music, that was in the spirit of its time: "Roundabout" as you mentioned, was their biggest hit from that time period, and if you tune to a "Classic Rock" station, you might still hear it today. New Yes had its beginnings in 1979 after the group had essentially disbanded following the relatively dismal sales of their 1978 album "Tormato." In addition to all the band members suffering from "low energy" combined with too much drink & drugs, and the fact that the music buying public had moved on from the "Progressive Rock" of bands like Yes, King Crimson & Genesis, to Punk (e.g. The Sex Pistols,) the band had all but called it quits.

This was a streamlined approach to Yes flavors to fit into the shifting music biz climate of the 80s. We can argue the merits artistically (and I do) but if commercial success was their goal, the song hit number 1 and was played on every kind of station you could think of at the time.

For me this is an okay song but nowhere near as good as their earlier music. I would suggest that you listen to And You and I, Heart of the Sunrise or my favorite YES song Siberian Khatru. Close to the Edge is probably their greatest song, it's an 18+ minute journey, but I always recommend that people listen to their earlier music first to get a better feel for them before jumping in to CTTE.

It's just the age old tale of feeling like(by societal standards) you're "supposed" to follow a certain path, yet your heart is telling you to follow another and is describing how it can be a hard, lonely struggle to figure it out and just be yourself. Hence: "free yourself, give your freewill a chance. You've got to work to succeed".... That's always been my take on it. The video though, (some parts anyway).... not my cup of tea. Although it does show him turning to go his own direction separate from the others. That part I'm good with! :)

    • @Vimana
      @Vimana Před 3 lety

Great song suggestions! I'd just like to make a small correction here. This song and the album has nothing to do with Jon Anderson's solo career. I'll write a short explanation of what happened:
The band "Yes" no longer existed for a while. I think it happened back in 1981. This band performing "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was supposed to be called "Cinema" and most of the songs on the album were written for that band. "Cinema" had many Yes members, like the original bassist Chris Squire, the drummer Alan White and the original keyboardist Tony Kaye. There were some discussions with Jon Anderson and he decided to join the band. Then they chose to name the band again as "Yes". Well, you can definitely call the band "Yes" because the guitarist Trevor Rabin is the only new member of the band. The music is a bit different though but I still like the album.
I also prefer the 1970s Yes. Starship Trooper, Awaken and South Side of the Sky are some of my true favorites. Long Distance Runaround is also great. Take care and have a fantastic day.

YES for me, has always been about quick unexpected changes in a song. Complex, if that makes sense? Lots of types of instrumental sounds.
When I think of YES I instantly hear the chorus to "Hearts" in my head from the 90215 album. Literally BIZ, it sounds like 6 different songs in one & each one represents a "YES" style of song to me. If someone asked me what YES sounds like I would hand them "Hearts".
I don't even know if people are familiar with that song at all! Maybe just check it out yourself instead of reaction! Keep going once you start. Lots of change ups. I'm so curious what you think of it. Message me here?

Try a band called The The. Very interesting band a British woman, I met as a young Marine, turned me onto in the 80s. They were part of a rebellion against punk/post-punk and went for a more polished jazz/rock sound that ended up inspiring a whole scene in London and thus, the world. This song has an opener recording of a Forward Air Controller. That's an Air Force position where they call in precision Close Air Support. I got to do that in the Marines. We called the same position a Forward Observer, (cool name when you think about life). Wasn't my official job. I was cross trained as I was in 2D ANGLICO, (Air/Naval Gunfire Liaison Company) as their Water Safety Survival Instructor.
