The relationship between Larry and Magic is what defines the difference between Enemies and Rivals. Rivals respect each other and push each other to be better. You can be great friends and still be rivals because at the end of the day, you leave it on the court and keep the respect.

Larry's mind is what made him next level. He knew what to do and when to do it. You didn't know if he was going to shoot, pass, or what the hell he was going to do. He could drain it being double teamed with a couple of hands in his face, he could pass it, or he could fake it, you just never knew. I grew up as a Jordan fan and in that era, but watching things like this makes me realize that Bird was next level, simply because of his mind. One of only 3 players to win 3 straight MVS, a coach of the year, then won an exectuive of the year (the only person ever to win all three), that shows his basketball genius.

  • @rustydaboyrobot
    @rustydaboyrobot Před 2 lety +48

That's just a taste of Larry's play. You literally could not stop him from scoring...including being double teamed by MJ and Pippen, 7'4" Ralph Sampson, Kareem, Olajuwan, Dominique, etc. He averaged more rebounds than Patrick Ewing, was a phenom at passing, the king of trash talking, and an assassin at clutch shooting. Top 3 player of all time, right there.

Wilt, Bird, Russel I think is close.
I know Larry had a strong sense for the game. I haven't watched enough of Russel to know where his mind was at so he gets 3rd.

No joke...... would LOVE to watch a prime and "HEALTHY" Larry Bird dismantle and disgrace today's NBA. He'd very realistically average a quadruple/double every game while even pushing Curry for tops in field goal and free throw percentages. Young folks don't know..... but Bird was a very bad man and you definitely did not want to see his Celtics in the playoffs. That guy was no joke and easily had the talent to destroy today's league, but his body failed him. There's a story when he coached the Pacers, not long after he hand underwent a shoulder or back surgery and was out at the shoot around when they were in the playoffs and rhe story goes that Bird..... a recently surgical repaired Bird hit about 20 shot sin a row from varying distances as the Pacers were prepping to play the Bulls. Knowing Bird..... I straight 💯 believe that story.

Best all around player of all time. Best clutch shooter, best passing forward of all time. Unselfish, made his teammates better. I watched all of these golden age games live, he was the best player on the floor at all times. Yes, Jordan was more athletic, but you can name 30 things Larry did that MJ didn't. Telling opponents the play in a playoff game, Left handed game, 3 point contests, being drafted as a junior in college. Watch the entire game 6 of the 86 playoffs vs Houston.........omg as a Rockets fan I was devastated. I have never seen anyone play a better game.

  • @robgelfand2414
    @robgelfand2414 Před 2 lety +40

Ok , I am going to explain lots about Bird here that you need to know and why Bird is the best all-around player of all time.
First - even before Bird started his NBA career he broke the index finger and shattered the knuckle on his shooting hand and he said he never shot as well after that. He can't straighten it and the knuckle is hideous.
Second - Birds affect on the Celtics was immediate. The year before Bird played for the Celtics, the Celtics were 29-53. With Bird being the only significant change to Boston's roster, the Celtics record in Bird's first year was 61-21.
Third - Bird won Rookie of the Year and came in 4th in the MVP voting his rookie year. This is where Bird placed in the MVP voting the next 8 years - 2,2,2,1,1,1,3,2, becoming only the 3rd player in NBA history(Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell are the other 2) to win 3 straight MVPs
Fourth- Bird founded the 50-40-90 club, which is 50% or more field goal percentage, 40% or more 3-pt field goal percentage and 90% or more free throw percentage. There are only 9 players in NBA history who have accomplished this and only 2 who have done it more than once. Bird did it in back to back seasons and Steve Nash did it 3 times in a row(4 times overall).
Fifth - in games Bird played in, his team won 73.58% of the time, only 2nd to Magic at 73.95%
Sixth - even after the Celtics got McHale, Parish, Ainge and Dennis Johnson, Bird still made a huge difference - how huge, the Celtics record in the 87-88 season was 57-25. In the 88-89 season Bird only played in 6 games and had surgery for bone spurs on both feet, the Celtics record that years was 42-40.
Seventh - his overall statistics -
He's not the best shooter ever
He's not the best rebounder ever
He's not the best scorer ever
What he is is a complete player and is in the top 250 NBA players of all time in these 8 categories
    Field goal %
    Free Throw %
    Points per game
    Assists per game
    Rebounds per game
    Steals per game
    Blocks per game
    Minutes per game
Lebron isn't, Jordan isn't, Steph isn't, Kobe isn't, Durant isn't Dirk isn't, Magic isn't, Kareem isn't, Wilt isn't, Bill Russell isn't, and the list goes on and on. Bird is in the top 60 players of all time in 6 of the 8 categories.
And last there are the things he did that I don't so anyone else doing.
He played most of a game shooting with his off-hand just because he wanted to.
Time after time in big spots he would tell the other team what the play was and where he would shoot from , before the play even started
He knew where all players on the court were at all times.
Additionally, Bird accomplished all this while playing hurt his entire career, the worst of it playing with a bad back after, get this, shoveling gravel while building a driveway at his mothers house.
If Bird was breathing and could move he was playing

If his back was better he'd have the best winning % ever, if he had Magic's team he'd be ahead by miles.
If their 1987 draft pick didn't die (Len Bias) he'd have the record, and a few more rings to go with it.
If I had a time machine I'd drop a 20yr old bird in 2020 and watch him turn Luka "magic" into Luka "eh that was alright i guess". Joker won MVP the last 2 years, and I'd argue bird is a more athletic version of everything that makes Joker great, with a more manic competitiveness as well.

The Lakers/Celtics, Bird/Magic rivalry is what defined the 1980s NBA, and is widely credited for saving the league. As iron sharpens iron, those two made each other better on the court, and they became the best of friends because of it.
That era was before my time (I grew up in the Bulls/Rockets era of the 90s), but while many young ones view Bird as just simply a great shooter, he was virtually the complete article. Bird could play D if needed, his passing game was unmatched, he could dunk and shoot, his basketball IQ was through the roof, his court vision and awareness was pre-cognitive as if he knew what was going to happen 10 seconds before it did, and I don't think there's any NBA player that could match Bird's drive and motor today.
I'm not sure we'll see a player like that again in our lifetimes.

Team players, not me, me, me kind of guys. Well maybe Jordan but, he was Jordan, of course you give him the ball haha. Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson (a personal favorite of mine since he and I both served in the Navy), Clyde Drexler, Grant Hill, Reggie Miller. Larry Bird wasn't the most athletic player. Not even close. He didn't put up staggering career numbers. He wasn't a dunk machine. He wasn't a phenomenal defender. What Larry Bird did was elevate his TEAM. Bird was the best all-around player in the history of the NBA. He got his teammates involved and took a middle-of the pack team IMMEDIATELY deep into the playoff picture. Bird was an All-Star every single season of his career except for the year he only played 6 games because of surgeries on both feet. He won the league MVP award 3 consecutive years. He is only the 3rd player in league history to pull that off. He won the 3-point shootout the first 3 consecutive years. I could go on for hours, but all of this is readily researchable. The sheer number of his feats is STAGGERING. He LITERALLY did something every single game that would make you throw something in disbelief.

Rodman, after getting cooked by Bird in a game, said he'd be considered average if he were a black player. This insulted Bird, so he began telling the opposing player...the whole team -including the coach- what the last play was-with the game on the line, where he was gonna get it, & told them they couldn't do anything about it. And he was usually right. I mean, how many players tell you where they're going to take the game-deciding shot & challenge you to stop them?

I don't watch much basketball these days, but I never failed to watch the old guys, back in the 80's where the referee's let the players work it out and usually they called only the flagrant fouls, and in some of the playoff games, the only called when they saw blood. Today, you can fart and get a foul and I think the old guys back then could be more than a match for the guys today if you played by their rules. Lebron was great, but nobody could measure up the the legend. Magic said ther would never ever be another Larry Byrd. Between Magic and Larry, these two guys along saved the NBA at a time when basketball was really flagging and viewing was way down, buy when these two guys faced off at the playoffs, you can bet the scalpers were getting a fortune for a ticket because if you look around at the arena, there is standing room only, and not a vacant seat in sight. It was truly a different era, the players were the greatest and the Celtics ruled the day. Some great ball was exhibited in those days. Getting old.

THAT'S why he is called "Larry Legend"... He is only player to beat all the tops in the playoffs during his era... Jordan's Bull had a losing season record (11-17) and were swept twice (0-6) in the playoff by Bird's Celtics... He is one of only 3 players (Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain) to win MVP 3 times in a row, and over an 8 year stretch he went 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 2nd... With Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Dr. J and all the rest of the studs from the past, playing at the same time... I consider Larry to be in the top 3 all time... I wish people would take race out of the equation. There are plenty mediocre black players in the league as well.
So the origin of showtime basketball is Pete Maravich. Bird and Johnson and Thomas watched Pete play. Pete was the best offensive player ever.
Take a look at the Tom Chambers highlight reel by TC 24 but review the one entitled “ The Dunk”
The NBA logo is Jerry West
There is precious little video but in his prime Arvydas Sabonis may have been the best big man ever Bill Walton called him a 7’3” Larry Bird.
