oh boy, this social distancing really gets me so I decided to learn a new sign language and such a perfect time to learn them. I'll be learning about BSL (British Sign Language) and comparing them with ASL. let's find out how much different are they and watch me learning a new language.

I’ve always thought of good morning as “good” and then the hand going up ward is showing the sun going up. Same with evening, the sun is setting (half way) and good night the sun is down.

Well done!!! I’m a BSL user 😁 I did try to learn ASL (this video was uploaded on my channel) and I know how you feel, overwhelming! Also I can tell the difference between BSL and ASL. It makes me want to learn ASL again!
So interesting!! I'd always been taught that the signs for morning afternoon and evening were depicting where the sun is headed. Like the sun coming up from the horizon for morning, the sun directly above the horizon for afternoon and the sun going down below the horizon for evening. The was neat to see the explanation of clock hands in relation to those signs!

I did a level 1 qualification in BSL about 10 years ago now but was put off going any further as soon as I found out there's regional dialects in sign language! I watched See Hear (very popular TV show amongst the deaf communities in the UK) and only understood about 10% of the signs! :)

Learning “who, what, where, why, how” in BSL was the hardest for me to remember! They use the same hand shape as ASL but words were different! Part two??? 👀

Okay I know there are different dialects but I never knew people did different signs for numbers in BSL, its not massively different they just went from the thumb for 6,7,& 8 and do 10 fingers for 10, whereas I use the pinky finger for 6 and go that way across & 10 is one handed, but it still shocked me for some reason aha.
I've also never seen that sign for yellow

I use asl bc I live in the us and I’m deaf, idk much bsl, I only know the alphabet of bsl, so I learned some signs of bsl!
That was pretty cool seeing both languages. I know Auslan (Australan sign language) I tried to follow along but got confused because BSL and Auslan is so close but some signs are different.
Also there are Scottish, irish, Welsh and English signs plus regional making it even more complex.
IM literally trying to remember my basic ASL when watching this. Im glad that there are those who are ASL and other SL CZcamsrs. I literally have it on mute and Im trying to read your hands more than anything.

Whats the reason that you dont hear? Is it about nervous system or tympanic membran etc. I am in medical school and interested in ear nose throat now. If your problem is about the mechanical parts of the system, do you think about using a cochlear implant?

The alphabet is so different from asl so when I finger sign I have to remember I’m not signing in ASL/BASL I’m signing in BSL

Just like different american regions, each part of the UK have different versions of BSL - In Northern Ireland the signs are different for a lot of words

numbers in BSL are also different depending on which area of the country you live in. It’s like ‘accents’.

Growing up I had my grandma teach me some BSL because India 🇮🇳 just free from Britain and they did not develop ISL ( India signs language)
Is ASL better than BSL? I't seems ASL has an advantage by using a single hand for more words, giving you a free hand more often.

If someone knows BSL, can they still communicate to someone who only knows ASL?
Definitely not. ASL stems from french sign language, so it's not even in the same language family as BSL. Naturally with some signs they can be similar but really they are completely different languages.
From the BSL wiki: "As a consequence American Sign Language today has a 60% similarity to modern French Sign Language and is almost unintelligible to users of British Sign Language."

Sign languages are not "translations" of a spoken language, so sign languages from english speaking countries won't be simmilar They are a different type of thing. I'm from Brazil other countries that speak portuguese won't have the same sign language as us. Local dialects accurrs as well, people from different states sometimes don't understand each other because the country is so big lol
