- I wanted to address a few things that have been on my mind lately after reflecting, listening to others' perspectives. I appreciate those healthy conversations that are being held of, and I wanted to share about this.

Deaf, hearing , “elite”, or not .... the girls that bullied you were assholes. PERIOD.... and they now have to live their lives with everyone knowing what’s assholes they are. You’re awesome 👏
They were totally jealous of YOU! The Elite proved to the world how truly mean, shallow and UGLY they are. The show wasn’t about them so they did what a spoiled child would do when they weren’t the center of attention... Be their true selves. YOU GO GIRLFRIEND! God bless you.
Especially Tessa. She was a straight up judge mental, jealous BITCH! I hope she has grown up a little since then.
During Deaf U the Elites:
Mocked you to others right in front of you.
Watched your videos and insulted them.
Talked shit about how you sign (which non-Deaf people might not understand is like insulting who you are, your background and even family, it's very cruel).
Hurt you physically. That horrible girl at the party who insulted you and then shoved a lollipop in your mouth wasn't kidding around. She wanted you to feel pain and humiliation. You were classy and brave about it and said/did nothing to retaliate. But it obviously hurt you.
In my experience bullies who know they can't justify their behavior turn it around to make it the victim's fault. So instead of addressing their actions toward you and the prejudices that do exist in the community, they blame you. If you hadn't said "elites" or "not Deaf enough" they would have been angry about any other wording you did choose and use it against you.
I really hope this opens up a truthful dialog about these issues so that other Deaf people don't go through the same bullying. You are strong and honest and deserve all good things to come your way. And that includes a sincere apology.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. Tessa has the type of personality that likes gossip, focuses on relationships and where people fit. She is concerned with hierarchy, pity’s others and envy will come up for her.
This is it entirely. Tessa and the girl at the party were using deaf community stuff as an excuse to cover that they’re really just jealous of her.
It was ugly af and they won’t make it far once they’re out of school life with attitudes and nastiness like that.
I don't feel like you need to apologise for anything. What you said and your feelings are valid. They were obviously bullying you and treating you differently at school and no one deserves that. I hope you are doing well and in a better place now.

Just finished watching the whole Deaf U series, you have no need to apologise or give explanation for your comments. We get it. Many of us Deaf people feel the same way.

I searched for you after I watched “Deaf U” on Netflix. Even tho I’m not deaf, I could relate to you in many ways. I just want to say I commend you for doing what’s BEST for U. I wish you the best of luck in your Journey which I’m sure will be GREAT 💕

I think a lot of “minorities” or marginalized communities can identify with that “not enough” terminology. I’ve always been “not Asian” enough. But what does that mean? Groups of people, cultures, sub cultures, are not monolithic and include ranges of what it means to identify with a certain group of people.

A dear friend of mine was shunned by a self proclaimed "lesbian community" because she identified as a person first, then a woman, then a musician, then a gay women. She was chastised for not being lesbian enough. It hurt her to be ostracized in that way by the same community she loved being part of but she is now a known artist who is extraordinarily talented and also happily an out lesbian, but it's not the alpha and omega of who she is.

First let me say I thought you were one of the most “real” and honest in the series. As a Gallaudet Alumna G’95, I thought your feeling and words were spot on to those who were being “elitist”, and feeling not deaf enough. Deaf U was more than I hoped for - for hearing people to see the deaf community as it is- same as any other “community” in America that faces bully’s from their own race, religion or sexual orientation. For ANYONE in the Deaf Community to make YOU feel that you used the wrong “words” to express your feelings is hypocritical to say the least. THEIR BEHAVIOR showed the world that those actions were elitist and showed their community in a negative way - NOT YOU! I have to say I am surprised that you are from a deaf family because I didn’t catch that in Deaf U but your ASL was on par so makes sense. I saw a number of my classmates that identified all their lives with hard of hearing came to Gallaudet and had the hardest time. Students actually said to them, “Deaf or Hearing, which, pick one”. I understand the fight of the deaf community to be seen as a regular person who just happens a to not hear. I had a great experience and was personally “accepted” even though I was a HEARING PERSON! yes, I am not even a CODA bit a “SODA”. I grew up in the deaf community with unique experiences (hearing being mainstreamed in a deaf school for the first Pre school to 3rd grade) but what I witnessed is unfortunately what is reality not only at Gally but all schools. Do you think there are not students at neighboring Howard who felt not black enough or at GeorgeTown who did not feel smart or privileged enough. That goes on everywhere. But it is people like you who share and discuss these issues in a positive manner. But NEVER apologize for WHO you are as long as you are kind to others and believe in your journey! All the best in all your goals and accomplishments - I am now a subscriber to an amazing positive INFLUENCER! 😉!
Wait there are schools where hearing kids can be mainstreamed with deaf students here in the US? I have been looking to see if there were any of that kind here in the US. The only other country that has a school where deaf and hearing kids go to and sign during the school sessional is in Australia. But other then your school experience I have hear similar things about Gallaudet from folks in my local Deaf community. Not a lot but a lot of bullying, racism, and elitism.
Lets just say, I watched the first episode of the show and was like: Oh wait, its 20 years later and these idiotic animosities are still going strong AF? .. so your statements are totally valid. Both the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community seems to just continue to repeat history over and over again, and NOT evolve. Such a sad thing :(
One way to interpret the phrase "not Deaf enough" is that the person saying it doesn't feel they are accepted in the Deaf community. Over time, the Deaf person can attract and form their own friends who accept them as they are. I can understand how people feel that way, I've SEEN people say that another person "isn't Deaf enough" so that phrase is used to judge another.
I agree. I don’t think Cheyenne was wrong at all. It was a valid feeling and she didn’t really attack anyone else just expressing her experience and feelings
Just finished watching Deaf U in one sitting 😂 LOVED IT and you were my absolute favorite person to watch. You have such an authentic state of being and watching you grow over those episodes was beautiful. I’m not deaf but I learnt so much and remember you’re young you’re not supposed to have it all figured out yet! And one place isn’t supposed to give you all the answers and maybe going there was enough for you to learn you DIDN’T need to go there to figure that out! Good luck at your next college. I just finished the season and immediately found you on CZcams just to say this: While the show opened my eyes to a lot, you yourself did so as well. In the black community we often deal with the concept of someone being “black enough”. I think I’ve been trapped in my own bubble when it comes to the statement as being someone that falls into being the attacked in that conversation. I just finished this video and you did an excellent job explaining your position on what you said. So much so that it has helped to shape how I feel about some of the things that I’ve regularly encountered in my community and will use that molding you contributed to to hopefully be a better force for my culture. I guess I could have just said thanks and let it go, but I like typing 😂

wow - very powerful - I had a similar experience as yours, tho I am not from any traditionally marginalized "community" - but it seems to happen everywhere - and it is a falsehood perpetuated by those whose identities hinge on their being higher in whatever hierarchy...
Hey girl! :) just ended watching the TV show and I have to tell you something : you are funny, talented, smart, beautiful and honest. Don't let anyone take that away from you!! Ever! Don't doubt in yourself just because some part of the community thinks they are better than you. They showed the world how disgusting they are. Minority people, of any kind, should know what is like to be bullied, make fun of and marginalized. If they want to be the "Elite" good riddance, but one day, when you have built a strong bridge with all sorts of people, they will stay and rot in their little hateful circle.

Really sounds like they've been gaslighting you and/or projecting their own shitty behaviour onto you. They were awful to you and somehow you're still the one apologising. You were honest about what you were feeling and I don't think you need to be sorry about that
The whole "elite" thing going on during Deaf U is mind-boggling and disturbing. Generational hearing loss makes them better than other deaf people? That is just...insanity. And frankly, something that no one would see as a bragging point outside of the people in that bizarre bubble. I have seen the prejudice that comes with hearing loss up-close. You would think that experiencing that on a generational level would make people more compassionate and understanding. Instead, these kids are flat-out *bullies*. I am absolutely unimpressed and appalled by the behavior and attitudes that went on and I am certain I am not alone in these feelings. Some of these clips will come back to haunt some of these kids. If I were considering hiring the girl who insulted you then shoved a sucker down your throat and saw that clip? She would receive a hard NO from me. And frankly, I don't think that Tessa's problem with you has anything to do with what school you went to or how you use ASL. She is used to being the prettiest girl at the party and then you showed up and completely outshone and out styled her. Anyone who humble-brags about how much money their parents make has some big self-esteem issues covered in an inflated ego. Outside of her little following, I doubt there are many (any?) who think better of her after watching her ridiculousness on-screen.

I'd also like to know what is Gallaudet doing about this. Anything? Because this group and what they do seems to be common knowledge and exclusion like this is something they should ABSOLUTELY be pro-active at fighting against. I get that you can't stop some things of this nature but there are definitely things that they could be doing to fight these attitudes and prejudices. Or are they encouraging it?

Your story made me remind of my experience into the deaf and hearing world, but I grew up in the hearing world because I went to mainstream school and I graduated HS. I agreed with you that I wasn’t enough to be a deaf because I don’t have many deaf friends that they lived in different city in WA. Only I had 3 deaf people at my high school, they had ASL program that my teacher was taught to these hearing students. I’m not usually to hang out with many deaf people when I see their signs were different with my ESL. Mostly, I’m struggled with ASL and ESL because of writing structure. Right now, I’m into deaf world because there are lot of opportunity has helped me a lot that I decided to change who I am into the community that I love or hate it depends on my moods. I love your personality on deaf U. You made me little tear in the end..wow. You’re not only one! I did the same thing in the past.
I found you thru Deaf U, and I was amazed by your resilience and I related to you so much. That's what I felt during school. I'm so happy that you're doing better and def going to watch more of your videos. :)
This is why I LOVE watching you. You have always been OPEN AND HONEST. I really admire you for that. As I probably have told you before, I also grew up mainstream and never knew anything about the Deaf schools until after I graduated. Now I do remember my teachers telling my parents not to EVER sign to me. I thought it was normal. Now I know it isn’t. I do feel hurt. Thanks for your HONESTY and being YOU!
I binged "Deaf U" on Netflix today and I really liked it. I enjoyed seeing the deaf community represented and the fact that you guys got to show it to all of us is amazing. I am hearing but I know sign language from members of my family who are deaf so seeing this on TV and watching the culture is awesome and I loved it ❤ 🤟🤟
I’m not deaf so I’ve never heard of this “Elite” thing. Seems very strange to me that there is a hierarchy in the deaf community. Sad that every group finds a way to discriminate against their own.

Loved you in Deaf U, out of the students you have a lot of integrity. The fact that the other students were so judgmental towards you was so ridiculous. I wished you had not dropped out, but having a degree doesn’t define you. You were seeing the bigger picture beyond university ,when the rest were living in the moment which only lasts for a fraction of your life. Your channel is growing and continue to create content your way.

Just watched the trailer for Deaf U and now I get a lot of what you were saying a lot more. I completely see where you are coming from. Not sure if that matters coming from me because I am a hearing person but it helped me connect the dots more. I stumbled on your channel when I was testing my sign knowledge. I took it in college but hadn't used it so I was trying to brush up. Truth be told I'm not great but I found your content interesting so I've kept up with your channel. I just finished the last episode of season 1 of Deaf U and I want you to know that you are my favorite person on there. I had to come on CZcams and find you right away. I am not deaf but you have inspired me as a woman and as a minority. I commend you for not allowing the elites to stop you. They see the light that is within you and how you connect to everyone and they are jealous that they aren’t able to shine as brightly as you do. That is what bullies do - try to keep you from doing what they feel they cannot and which usually stems from their own deeply embedded fears. You are amazing and I cannot wait to see all of the wonderful achievements you will make in this world. I have always wanted to learn ASL and you have motivated me to do so because of your gorgeous personality and the beautiful way you sign. I am Mexican American and at times I don't feel Mexican or USA enough; like your community, our is very close- both physically and figuratively- and both sides are very blunt on calling out for not know EVERYTHING about, each, the culture(s).

So I watched the show and fell in love with how sweet and down to earth you were. I’m not deaf but I loved you. You’re the only one on that show with class and I had an experience like yours as a child so when you talked about it I felt every emotion. And the whole elite thing was ridiculous kinda funny cause they seek attention and behave like 5 year olds crying for attention it’s unattractive. Like u said we all are humans...When I subscribed your CZcams, I fully recognized and loved you as a true deaf person!! We all did changed during college years and learned things in right or wrong way. Time and growing up will heal ya in the long run. I am 62 years old and have been through many good or bad experiences. Those have taught me to get better along the years. I believe ya will do fine as a true deaf beautiful lady and be yourself 😊👍🏼. I just finished watching DeafU and loved seeing you shooting the social media videos on fashion etc. You also seemed a very interesting person who articulates herself and her journey very well. I came to CZcams to see whether you still had a channel and what you're doing now. I was sad at the end of the series that you left DC/college, and hope you finish up school somewhere--it just makes things easier, generally, in life, even if it's hard and you don't really feel like it now. I have told so many people (including my 85 year old Mom) about DeafU and how fascinating it was, as a person who knows very little about the deaf and hard of hearing community, and just generally. The sociology of it was riveting.
And seeing your situation was eye opening. I have struggled my whole life being among elites--where I grew up and went to school and which part of Society I am "supposed to" be in. And I had always internalized their looking down on me and having more power than I. I have wondered for decades what I could do differently--in the past what could I have done differently, and now in the present and into the future.
My mother has always said people of whatever "Elite" don't matter--that they have self-appointed that status and in real reality their status and hierarchy is a false construct of their own making that they try to force others to kowtow to, often successfully.
I have always insisted, even at my advanced age now, that unfortunately people like that DO matter and what they say about you DOES matter. But watching Deaf U and your struggle, I found myself saying "This woman is so talented, interesting, bright, singular, clear-sighted, motivated, driven, funny, obviously physically beautiful--how could she POSSIBLY care for one split second what these bitter, emotionally ugly, unoriginal, fearful, mean-spirited, small-minded, twisted, PAROCHIAL conformists would EVER say or think about her?! They completely lack the capacity even to begin to get who and what you are and what you have to offer the world and humanity! They cannot possibly grasp it because they are fundamentally unimaginative, uncreative, sheltered, dull, and dependent on their 'role' in deaf society such that they are not their own persons!"
And I realized then how many times people have said things like that to me, but I never listened. I thought the people saying those positive things I just wrote about you above simply did not understand how and why these people had actual power over me--and that, in the context we all grew up in, they are correct: that I am not _______[whatever] enough.
But they don't. I finally realize this, seeing Deaf U. I hope you realize this. There are always people in this enormous sea of humanity who fall outside those boundaries. And who are always on the lookout for others who don't conform to any particular identity group---people who have made it. And then look to people like you, like me, to help---and we do that for younger people coming up. People have always seen my potential---regardless of those disapproving Elites, who have sometimes literally warned me that I would be banned, or blackballed, or never work again blah blah blah, and it's BS. But even tho that has worked for me throughout my life--and I have hired and otherwise helped others who aren't toeing the line but who are talented and wonderful and whose voice and work deserves to be seen and heard---I never 100% saw the Elites in my life and lifetime as the cartoon characters they are. Seeing the group in Deaf U....the disapproving elite people I am talking about are hearing but otherwise exactly the same---and I finally now DO see them as cartoon characters.
They mean nothing, Cheyenna. Their power is infintessimally smaller than they imagine it to be. Don't reward them by believing it. They are small, small people with big status in a tiny self-referential and self-congratulatory world.
I loves what you said on the show about pressure to be a DEAF social media influencer, rather than a social media influencer who happens to be deaf. I will tell you, as a hearing person, or simply as a person---that I can "hear you" better as a person, as a creative person who happens to be deaf. I am blown away by the fact that you are deaf and what you are doing far more than if you were supposedly a poster child FOR some cause. Don't do that. Don't be that. It is suffocating.
As cliched as it is: be yourself, keep your head up, and do your best.
And....I just watched your video. I don't mean to be unkind but it reminds me of those videos of hostages or politicians who made some terrible blunder and someone is pointing a gun at the, off camera or threatening never to fund them again and to tarnish their reputation and their family. Throwing yourself in front of a bus you don't have to throw yourself in front of. Backpeddling what you said and did, when what you said and did was NOT wrong. Nothing you said or did was wrong or weird or harmful or toxic or out of line, or unfair, or mean, or even "because you were angry and hurt."
You spoke (a) your truth and (b) truth to power. You looked this false god that is the classist elite straight in the face and you unmasked it. This was enormously truthful. And truth and light and transparency is always good.
All this ish about privilege etc etc. Yes, sure, of course, much of that is true---but you do NOT need to wear the hairshirt for any reason due to who you are or what you did or said. You don't have to be a warrior or spokesperson for one or another "Cause" which people would want to claim you for. Those "Causes" will always betray and/or ultimately compromise of silence you. You don't need them. Keep going straight to The People, and we will embrace you and pay for your content. And look for those slightly off beat people who are also successful through their own means, not beholden to others--because we're here.

I absolutely know where you are coming from cause I am you in a way... you should never ever apologize for anything! At all! I was born dead into hearing family... I was alone pretty much! But grew up in both deaf and hearing world... to be honest with you I’d pretty much rather live in the hearing world than in the deaf world cause like u said you felt that you didn’t fit... same here I felt that I didn’t belong there as well... feelings are completely valid regardless! That word elites... I’ve came across that word before but didn’t really care to know the true meaning of it till I saw Deaf U and was interested in why it was used... I’ve met a lot of dead elites in my lifetime but I can never fit into their world cause their view is soo different than mine! But do have few friends who are but I didn’t realize how it really made me feel till I saw that series and it brought up old wounds that I never understood cause I could never find the words for that... Girl... don’t ever apologize for anything cause I never did.... cause I am not responsible for how other people feel or what they do cause it has nothing to do with u! You do you! Don’t ever let the world tell you otherwise!
Hi Cheyenna You dont owe them apology. It is your own journey. I enrolled Gallaudet 1986 from mainstreamed and I was not Deaf enough. It is an ongoing tradition where they need to break the isms. Everyone SHOULD feel welcome regardless the signing. I am almost 52 years old, I will never be fluent in ASL and I learned ASL for the past 10 years.. I looked back.. I was signing SEE (total communication) and just learned that it is not language, just system communication. It makes sense. We should not feel bad for not meeting their expectations and should have never been treated differently. I watched Deaf U, I enjoyed your journey and Renate Rose's journey because it is reality. You are not alone. You do not owe anyone explanation or apology.

You did so well in Deaf U; to try and go on and not let it phase you. You are human, you have a right to feel and say whatever you want in those moments. I commend you and your strength for deciding enough was enough and leaving. You were targeted and bullied by others and that was evident. Do not let anyone tell you how you felt, what you said etc was not and is not valid. You have shown great character in this video with how you have gone about explaining yourself (although, you shouldn’t have to really) and the acknowledgments you have made. You do you 💜

I just watched this after I finished watching Deaf U, and I honestly think you are an amazing person. Although we all make mistakes and are not perfect, you should not blame yourself for the ignorant actions and words that were done against you. In this situation, I don’t see any reason why you should have to apologize. You did nothing to harm anyone. I honestly feel as though the only reason some of the “elites” did not like you are because you’re a gorgeous and smart woman and they wish they had what you have, you have a glow to you. Keep being you and striving to be a better person for yourself 🙏🏽

Cheyenna. I watched DeafU knowing full well it was a reality show that was heavily edited, etc etc. But I very much related to you and your struggles about feeling "deaf enough". I'm newly diagnosed hard-of-hearing and am scared of not belonging in either world, the deaf or hearing.
Don't ever apologize for how you feel, because in the moment your emotions are your reality, and that's valid.
Having this platform to express yourself is challenging I'm sure, especially now being a well-known representative for the deaf/hh community.

I know that DEAF U was filmed about a year ago, but I came here to say that you are valid and you are awesome. I know first-hand that minorities in every form need to be around to support each other inside and gain allies from the outside. That group aspired to neither. Their name alone is a red flag within this group. It excludes and demeans. Why the need to feel superior by creating pain within a group that already experiences so much pain from the outside? It was appalling. Not just because of your experience, but we can only assume that they've bullied others exactly the same - and it's not right.
I wish you the very best and hope that you know that you're not lacking anything by now. You are you. And you represent people like you with inner grace and inner beauty. You belong, and you will find your tribe in your immediate life if you haven't done so already.

I was a student at model secondary school for the deaf & I used to hangout with people from Gallaudet U. I totally GET it. I related to you in many ways. Hmm, I never saw those words as bad. I'm not Deaf enough has empowered many Deaf to stand proud and educate various communities. A lot of us feel frustrated with people. Yes it a a group of Deaf but as you mentioned it not all of Deaf community. People love putting us into boxes ”hearing impaired” ”hard of hearing” etc ”mutes” it was important to let others know you know what's inside your soul which is Deaf. We may feel differently all the time but that doesn't make it ok when people treat us badly and makes us feel horrible when clearly we know who we are. PerhapS you are overthinking... I am going to watch Deaf U but am nervous coz that program will impact Deaf communities good and bad.
I wish that in all communities accepting and loving differences was a default. But too often it is not. I think most people who show hate are those that are the most insecure and immature and they do it because they have been hurt. I hope those that hurt you heal from their hurt and learn to better themselves. They need to look inwards. Thank you for the honesty and genuineness in this video.
