  • Wife of automotive pioneer Karl Benz, Bertha was a staunch supporter of her husband's work, and was a DRIVING force in the realization of the first patented gasoline powered automobile. Impatient with her husband's perfectionism, it was 1888 when Bertha took Karl's "Benz Patent Motorwagen" on a 66 mile trip, accompanied by her two sons and unbeknownst to her husband. This was not only the first road trip in an automobile performed by a woman; it was the first road trip in an automobile ever. Upon return, she came to her husband claiming that the car wasn't powerful enough to get up hills. The first woman of the age of the automobile, she insisted it needed more power. In response to which Karl fabricated a low gear. Bertha Benz was truly a Woman Who Dared.
